38. The Story of Cheryl Araujo

On March 6, 1983 a 21-year-old woman was brutally raped by 4 men in a bar while other patrons and bar staff looked on, with some even cheering. Her case went to trial but she was quickly portrayed as “asking for it” and her name was smeared in the media. While the men who raped her were eventually found guilty, the damage was done and the young mother left with her family to another city. She would die just 4 years later in a car accident, which would once again become focused on victim blaming. This is the story of Cheryl Araujo.
