Female Voices: Life and Loss - 89: How to honor your motherhood as a bereaved mom on Mothers Day with Candance & Ann-Marie

89: How to honor your motherhood as a bereaved mom on Mothers Day with Candance & Ann-Marie

Female Voices: Life and Loss

As we approach Mother's Day Candace Kluba and Ann-Maire Ferry joined me to share some great insight to help you navigate the upcoming holiday.

Ways to celebrate and honor you as a Mother. Take time to turn inward and find what is best for you, find love and acceptance for yourself. Don't feel like you need to attend church services or brunch. Others will be there, celebrating with their children and that could be very hard. It's ok not to censor or filter on Mother's Day. You are a mother.

Practical Tips for Mother's Day:

Plant a flower or tree, grow a butterfly to release, spend time in nature, go hiking or spend time at gravesite thinking and feeling. Spending time in nature is healing.

Take time to feel the emotions and name while journaling, or write a letter to your baby that has made you a mother.

Make space to be angry and cry if that is what you need. Crying is healing.

Create new rituals for Mother's Day.

Invite a friend to be with you or reach out to other mom's that are hurting.

Your worth as a woman is not dependent on having children, it's not your only purpose

Give yourself the grace to enjoy your day and know that emotions can co-exist. Example Joy and Sadness

I am thankful to Candace and Ann-Marie for sharing some many helpful tips for you. Listen to Candance's journey to motherhood on Episode 19 and Ann-Marie's on Episode 21

88: Tony Mazzaferro sharing as a male, their infertility journey.

Tony Mazzaferro is a soon to be OB/GYN and part of the leadership of a non-profit called The Stork Foundation. With all of his education in medicine he never crossed his mind that he and his wife would have trouble conceiving.

They did all the things to become pregnant on their own with no luck. Then a couple different medications which was 3 months each with no luck. Lab work resulted in no answers. He talked about friends and family members announcing their pregnancy during this time and how easily they became pregnant which was not easy to hear. Of course they wondered if they would ever conceive. Next step for them was IVF which resulted in an unsuccessful transfer. After 3-4 years of struggling, they had a positive pregnancy test and now have a baby boy.

We talked about his wife's needle phobia during IVF. Tony shared about not reaching out for support and only getting support from his wife during their long journey. We talked about how I believe that is pretty normal for the male to keep things to themselves. And a good conversation about what to say and not say to couples that do not have children. Tony also shared about The Stork Foundation and how he became involved with this amazing organization that helps those struggling with infertility.

Tony's words of advice and encouragement for you: For those on the infertility journey, at times when things aren't working, hang on to hope and find support. Lean on your faith, friends, and family. There is always hope and people want what is best for you and really want to support you.

90: My daughter was born sleeping at 32 weeks with Chandria Taylor

Chandria Taylor is a teacher, an author, singer and dancer. She is the mother of four beautiful girls named Rylen, Jacelyn, Adelyn and Eden. Her daughter Adelyn Rose was born sleeping on November 1, 2018. Chandria now is the founder of Like A Rose, a nonprofit in Illinois that raises awareness and provides support and services to families who have experienced child loss.

Chandria shared her story and journey of the loss of her daughter Adelyn and how it has affected her and her other daughters as well. She shared a tremendous amount of insight on the time spent with her daughter after she was born. She shared that I had delivered my 2 older daughters and I just didn't know what it would feel like to deliver her and not hear her cry. She would have taken more time with her if she would have known she could.

I loved her insight on what to say instead of saying nothing. And never make yourself uncomfortable for the sake of someone else's comfortability. She also gave great tips on journaling which was so important in her healing. Chandria will be back on another episode in the future to share about her nonprofit, her books and the many other things she does to honor and remember Adelyn.

Chandria's encouraging words and insight for you the listener: You can only do your part, so whatever you do as your part, do the best part you can and don't worry about what others are saying or doing. Take care of yourself. As mothers we want to take care of everyone around us and we forget that we have value and that we matter, and you will not be good for anyone around you if you don't work on you. You matter and your voice has value, your story matters and don't ever forget that. Do the best with your part.
