Fables Agreed Upon

“The year is 1846, and it’s a cold, bitter winter. An ill-fated group of pioneers are trapped, snowed into crude little cabins near a lake in the Sierra Nevada. The food is gone, the horse and oxen have been eaten. Spines shiver and stomachs growl. A party of fifteen has gone out, seeking help, but there’s no telling when, or if, they’ll return. And so, the unthinkable occurs.”

Welcome to Fables Agreed Upon: A Historical True Crime Podcast! This week is part one of our Donner Party mini-series. In this episode, we discuss everything from the moment the Donner Party left Springfield, Illinois, and all the events leading up to those four cold and bitter months the travelers spent trapped at Donner Lake.

“Marshall Ratliff put on a Santa suit and got out of the car a few blocks from the First National Bank. Before long, he had a herd of children following him, all hoping for a chance to talk to Santa. They followed him to an alley beside the red brick, one-story bank, where he joined the other three men. Ratliff led the way into the bank, and the other men drew their guns.”

In this episode, we discuss James Reed and William McCutcheon’s attempts to return their families, the Forlorn Hope, and the events that transpired at Donner Lake that bleak winter.
