Mike Olsen died on the operating room table when he bled out during his double lung transplant. He found himself in heaven where he met Jesus and his organ donor, where he was able to let the donor know his deep gratitude, and get a message from Jesus about the new lungs. Yes, Mike's testimony is remarkable, but what I love most about his message are his insights from heaven. He experienced overwhelming peace in heaven, and he sees life differently in the light of eternity. "I realized I couldn't remember my past. I couldn't remember any sin. it was like it had been erased from a black board. I felt so encouraged and blessed. I just felt, WOW... it was all Jesus! Everything we accomplish in life...it is all Him. All of the striving, all of the worrying! I had an epiphany in heaven. Oh my goodness, I wasted SO much time worrying about finances, family, my spouse, how I appear to others, if I was doing enough, if I was pleasing God. It was like a weight had been lifted, and I realized that in Heaven none of that matters! Even the suffering, although I didn't like it, even though it was hard waiting for the transplant, even that doesn't matter in the light of eternity. The things that we go through might seem like they are long and gruesome, and horrible down here, But in the light of eternity, it's all woven into who we will be." - Mike Olsen Mike and his wife Patti live in Louisville, KY. He is a retired Pastor of Iona Community Church. In 2014 he was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a disease of progressive scarring of the lungs with no cure. The doctors told him he had 2 years to live and advised him to go home and make arrangements. Transplant would be his only option, but not a guarantee. Mike decided he wanted to make every breath count. He was passionate about bringing awareness to IPF and in helping others. He received his new lungs on January 7, 2019.

In this episode Mike shares:

  • God's word to him at the time of the devastating diagnosis that gave him supernatural peace.
  • The power of the prayers he was receiving.
  • Ruben's 3am call and the impact of listening to someone in need.
  • God's orchestration of meetings with politicians, celebrities, and the President to promote awareness and make an impact.
  • God's beautiful message in a vision during his wait for transplant.
  • The experience of being bathed in the light of heaven, seeing swirls of colorful lights (rainbow) and angels singing, meeting Jesus and the donor.
  • Seeing an angel at his bedside during recovery.
  • His book in progress about his experience and many other pieces of his journey, titled, "Bathed in Heaven's Light."
  • Joshua Mills' testimony where he was taken in the Spirit to China and evidence that followed.
  • Experience in his church with God's glory manifesting as gold on a child.

"Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him." - Psalm 115:3 NIV

"Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven. He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun, and his legs were like fiery pillars. and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion." - Revelation 10:1 NIV

As a Nurse Anesthetist, I find it difficult to fully express the value of Hospital Chaplains. Many of my patients have received emotional and spiritual support during times of crisis, whether pre-surgery, traumatic events, or during their last moments of life.

Chaplains have also been valuable to comfort hospital employees and patient family members during emotional distress. They comfort a diverse population, all cultures and all faiths at their most vulnerable moments.

"Be open to the extraordinary. Don't get limited and distracted by Earthly activities." -Chaplain David Carl, Senior Executive Director of Spiritual Care, Atrium Health

Chaplain David Carl has a Master of Divinity, and 45 years of experience! His background and his role is very unique, and I was honored to have a chance to spend an hour with him and capture some of his insight and his experiences. See below for what we discussed in our short time together:

[0-6:00] The extraordinary experience which called him to ministry, his unique background, and how he landed at Atrium Health

[7:33] Story of an unexplainable reunion

[14:57] A woman battling cancer is visited by an angel and her two deceased grandmothers with a reassuring message

[17:30] Chaplain Carl discusses "ghosts" on Earth and in the Bible

[21:00] Are we visited by spirits before we die? Are they angels or spirits of actual loved ones?

[21:52] A man in the ICU is visited by an angel with a beautiful message.

[24:43] Death visions. Hospice Chaplains believe we all have them near the end.

[25:25] A man in the process of dying has a dramatic vision that is so powerful the Chaplain and I hold back tears.

[31:39] Have you witnessed people have a negative (HELL) near death experience?

[33:20] End of life "meeting"

[34:00] Chaplain Carl discusses visions vs. hallucinations vs. delusions

[36:41] There are voices that are not from God. Be careful.

[38:00] WHY do some people get the miracle and some do not?

[40:00] Chaplain Carl's final message to the world after 45 years of experience as a Chaplain. Beautiful. Love this.

Thank you, Chaplain Carl, for what you do, and for this time to share such beautiful experiences!

We are often reminded to put our faith in God to find healing. On this episode we hear a testimony from Lynne Holcomb that highlights the necessity for faith in times of crisis. After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer—one of the deadliest forms of an already lethal disease— Lynne has beaten what could have been a life sentence.

Through the constant reminder of God's grace from family, friends, members of her Church, and even strangers, Lynne has outlived her diagnosis and wants to use her experience to help others.

“Don’t give up. God doesn’t want you to give up.” - Lynne Holcomb

Lynne was in the shape of her life, working as a personal trainer and teaching kickboxing for 25 years when she was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and given 3-6 months to live.

  • After receiving this life sentence, a nurse informed Lynne that faith could get her through the ordeal. Lynne recognized in this moment that the nurse was delivering God’s message of reassurance.
  • In the three years since her diagnosis, Lynne has been reminded by her support system of God's ability to heal her. Additionally, she has had her own conversations with Him in which she has found great comfort.
  • A clinical trial ended up not only stopping Lynne's cancer from spreading, but actually got rid of her tumors.

Lynne beating stage 4 pancreatic cancer is a reminder that miracles do happen, and she is passionate about sharing her story to remind others of God's ability to heal. Indeed, her own journey was paved with reminders from others of His grace. Though a harrowing experience, Lynne's ordeal should be a story of hope to all who hear it. Even when all odds seem to be stacked against us, God has the power to help us. What must keep fighting, and continue to have faith.

Guest Bio-

At the time of her diagnosis with pancreatic cancer, Lynne Holcomb had been a personal trainer for 25 years.

Lynne's certifications include:

She also strives to highlight the importance of faith to get through life's challenges.

Lance Malone was 24 and loving his life in Atlanta when he was diagnosed with acute-on-chronic liver disease, which is associated with organ failure and high short-term mortality. His liver disease progressed quickly, within just a few months. In his lowest moments, the Doctors informed him he was possibly down to his last hours. Lance poured his heart out to God, "Why?" Miraculously, God answered Lance, making him a promise... that He kept. The miracle of the promise was just one piece of this story. While Lance experienced lots of bumps in his road to transplant and healing, there were pieces of his recovery that the nurses and doctors considered miraculous as well.

Lance is presently residing in Cleveland. He is the Founder and Visionary for Become Better Ministries, and the Manager of HIV Services at Care Alliance Health Center. He is also a Motivational speaker and Prophetic teacher. "Have FAITH! Whether your situation is medical, or financial, you've got to trust God when you can't trace Him, and truly you will see that He WILL provide. Your circumstance is not too small for the Lord to intervene. He is still in the miracle making business, and yours is on the way!" -Lance Malone “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

Ashley developed complications in her second trimester of pregnancy. As her mother prepared to visit her in the hospital, she was led by the Holy Spirit to crochet a small cradle (hoping it would not be needed). Little did she know how God was going to use this gift to inspire comfort and healing not just for Ashley, but for thousands of bereaved parents in fifty states. In this episode Ashley shares:

The excitement of being pregnant with Bridget, her first child

Experiencing the heartache of grief and loss and choosing to trust God

The practical and emotional comfort of a small but powerful divine gift

Feeling the presence of Jesus during loss

Being led to an unexpected ministry and the impact it would have for thousands around the country

Upcoming events and how to get involved, online support groups

Speaking at the upcoming Christian Spark Media conference

"The cradle is really a 24 hour comfort, but the Gospel is eternal. We really felt the peace of God, knowing that Bridget was in heaven, that we were going to get to see her again. Death was separating us for now, but it is just a temporary separation. We choose to rely on our faith to move forward in our grief and know that we get to see her again." -Ashley Opliger, Bridget's Cradles

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 How to contact Ashley:

Everyday Miracles Podcast - [Episode #28] Coping with Grief during the Holidays
play

11/07/19 • 41 min

Julie Kemp has 11 years of experience as a Grief Facilitator. Additionally, Julie has personally experienced loss at the holidays, and she finds peace in helping others that are on a grief journey. Julie lost her husband suddenly in a car accident in October of 1997. While her son Landon (age 8) miraculously survived, he had a long road to recovery. She spent Thanksgiving in the hospital, and got to take her son home the week before Christmas. She shares openly what she experienced that first year, what helped her cope, and offers practical tips for those facing loss this holiday. She also shares warning signs for trouble and how to intervene when help is needed. Julie's recommendations for Thanksgiving: Count your blessings! Be thankful. Create a gratitude list A-Z, anything that comes to mind. Be thankful as you remember the many special ways your life was touched by your loved one. You hurt so much because you loved so much. Julie's top 10 Holiday Survival Tips: 1. Allow yourself to break away from old traditions, or start new traditions, at least for the first year. Even subtle changes can help you cope. Make a plan. 2. Give yourself permission to cry. Don't apologize for your feelings or for your tears. Grief is a process, and it is different for everyone. 3. If you are going to a social function and are unsure you can handle it, take a close friend who can speak for you if the words become too difficult. Make sure you have an exit if needed. 4. Light a candle to remember your loved one. You can create a special area to display photos to honor times together. 5. Don't expect too much of yourself. If you need to get alone, or leave early from an event, allow yourself that opportunity. Set healthy boundaries for yourself. 6. If you don't feel like listening to Christmas music or sending cards, then don't! There will be a time when you feel like doing it again, but you can skip a year or two until you feel ready. 7. Consider giving a gift in memory of your loved on to your favorite charity, needy family, or to an organization your loved one supported or belonged. 8. Finding time to reflect and journal may be beneficial to you and help you deal with your emotions. 9. Reading the Bible, particularly Psalms, can be beneficial. Finding a good devotional book and setting aside a daily quiet time for prayer and meditation will be advantageous for your grief journey. 10. ULTIMATE TIP: Skip the elf, the reindeer, and the tree, and remember the real meaning of Christmas and celebrate Jesus' birthday, and remember that because of his sacrifice that we will be united again for eternity. "Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God." 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
