This week on Every Rom Com we’re diving deep on the first of the John Hughes teen rom coms, “Sixteen Candles”! We’ll discuss the cultural associations with turning sixteen, as well as the enduring charm of Molly Ringwald, and how Jake Ryan became one of the most memorable and desirable cinematic love interests. We’ll also dig into several ways this movie hasn’t aged well, from sexual harassment and rape culture, to the complex layers of Gedde Watanabe’s portrayal of the foreign exchange student, Long Duk Dong. This is our longest episode yet, but don’t miss this in-depth episode on a high school movie that helped define an entire genre!

We’ll discuss actors Lauren Hutton, Karin Kopins, and Cleavon Little. And we’ll laugh at some ridiculous moments, and try to pick out the few things that did work in a movie that’s aged very poorly! This week on Every Rom Com we enter the grunge era, as we revisit Seattle with Cameron Crowe’s “Singles.” It was a much different time for dating, and Sophia and Jen wax nostalgic on the old tech they did use (landlines and answering machines) and marvel at the wacky tech they never got a chance to use (video dating!!!) We contemplate whether one lead character would have been better off dating their plastic surgeon, and disagree on whether Campbell Scott seems creepy. Finally, we give you a slew of double features, and some more Seattle locations to add to the previous list we made for “10 Things I Hate About You”! Every Rom Com - Every Rom Com 15: Before Sunrise
play

05/22/21 • 126 min

This week on Every Rom Com we begin the “Before” trilogy with Richard Linklater’s 1995 cult classic, “Before Sunrise.” We talk about the movie’s place as a Gen-X movie, ponder whether the story would work in the smartphone era, and gush over some of the most romantic scenes ever put to film. We deal with death, time, the battle of the sexes, and at one point we’re pretty sure we’ve figured out the meaning of life. We uncover a pretty cool Easter egg involving an Auden poem. And since it’s the travel series, we also introduce you to some of the movie’s great Vienna filming locations and other recommended stops on a Vienna tour. Whether you’re a first time viewer or a lifelong aficionado, this episode will almost definitely uncover a new aspect of the film. And since we laughed and almost cried while recording it, we’re hoping it’ll make you feel as well as think.

0:00-8:20 Introduction, Guest Host Zöe Wroten-Heinzmann

Zoë is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Monadnock Underground, a small independent publisher and literary magazine in Southern New Hampshire. Their projects include the just-released This Is Not Ordinary Time, about spiritual searching and the desire for community during times of upheaval, anthologies of mostly-local speculative fiction and spiritual writing, and a sporadic podcast of their own, Underground Over the Air. She rounds out her days embarking on homeschool adventures with her kids, working as a Religious Educator, learning Tai Chi, and tending her fruit trees and chickens.
