38. Igniting Your Inner Genius with Shannon Hughes, Type 7 (or 3!)
01/27/22 โข 64 min
I'm sure by now you've heard the advice to find and follow your genius, your superpower, to build an authentic and successful business.
Sounds great. Solid advice.
But, have you ever questioned what in the world that is for you? Maybe you can easily spot the genius of others, but when it comes to understanding your own, you're clueless?
A lot of time this happens because whatever that genius is, comes so freely and naturally, you don't even realize it's a thing.
If the answer happens to be yes for you, I definitely can relate to the idea of not seeing the label of your own jar as well and know you're going to get so much from today's conversation.
Our guest is CEO of Enlivened Studios, Leadership Coach, Interactive Speaker, and Experiential Team Trainer, Shannon Hughes.
Shannon combined her love for improv and experience in Corporate to create her business, Enlivened Studios. It's facilitation practice that uses improv-inspired techniques to bolster collaboration and communication through skills like listening, spontaneity and storytelling.
Inside this conversation you'll learn more about:
- Bringing clarity to what your inner genius is and how to use it
- Creative Leadership
- The benefits of an improv practice in your business (how it can help with your team, clients, and even networking with peers)
- The power of "yes, and..."
- Her morning practice
- What is a brave space (vs. safe space)
- Her story from VP of Client Strategy to burnout to Financial Ops Manager to feeling unfulfilled that eventually lead to her own business
- What most resonates with her as an Enneagram 7
- Why she started questioning if she might actually be a Type 3
She also shares three powerful statements she does inside her workshops with partners:
- "What I heard matters to you...."
- "What I'm curious about..."
- "What I want to honor about you..."
Listen in to find out exactly how to use these questions, how to find and connect with your inner genius, and how to infuse creativity and curiosity in your leadership, coaching, and networking skills.

37. Corporate to Camper: Riding into the Unknown with Laura Leaton, Type 2, 3 or 7
Have you ever thought, even just for a minute, what it would be like to live life on the road?
Back in 2020, I became obsessed with the idea. Like pretty much everyone, I was ready to shake things up after a year of feeling isolated and trapped during a pandemic.
I started dreaming of downsizing, selling my home, and buying an RV! I joined Facebook groups (they even have single mom RV living groups!) and read articles to prep and know what to expect.
I was ready to get out there and have nature be my son's education and my therapy.
For a lot of reasons, that obviously didn't happen for me, but for my guest today, it did!
A year ago, she sold (almost!) everything, bought an RV, and started her unconventional life on the road.
Selfishly I wanted to bring her on because I wanted to hear all about it :)
But regardless if you also have had the dream of RV life, you're going to get so much from this one because who hasn't had a pull to do something unconventional? To drop the shoulds, of who you should be, or what you should do, or how you should do something? I know that's something anyone listening to this podcast has felt.
And at the same time, you've probably also felt the fear of uncertainty and of the unknown to actually go through with your "crazy" idea.
In this episode, executive coach and leadership development trainer, Laura Leaton, shares all about what lead up to that decision, all the fears she faced as you made plans to go through with it, and what she's learned from a year of working and living in a camper van!
You'll also hear us talk about her top three Enneagram types - 2, 3 or 7 - and how after a year of intense growth and personal development, the stereotypical tendencies and common behaviors of the types aren't really showing up for her, so you'll hear what to focus on instead.
I can't wait for you to hear from Laura inside this interview.
After you've had a chance to listen, be sure and connect with her to follow along with her adventure and to let her know what you are taking away from this episode!

39. The Advice You Give, but Don't Take with Dr. Rebekah Tennyson, Type 2w1
Do you find yourself giving great advice and being generous, supportive, and understanding with others?
"You did a great job with that! How are you going to celebrate?"
"We all have those days. Nothing is wrong with you."
"Everyone needs a break. I'm in support of you getting rested."
But then when a situation presents itself to apply that same advice to yourself, you don't take it - resting, celebrating, forgiving. None of that applies to you because you don't deserve it or your situation is so different, right?
Our guest today explains why we do this to ourselves and how to think about it a different way, so that we can gift ourselves that same love and care that we so freely give to others.
Dr. Rebekah Tennyson is a Clinical Psychologist with a degree in Social and Political Sciences from the University of Cambridge and a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Oxford.
She's co-host of a Drop in the Bucket podcast, a trained Enneagram coach with Enneagram University, has completed an Externship in Emotion Focused Therapy, and other training courses in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy/DNA-V, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy skills, and Narrative Exposure Therapy.
And in this episode, she's also joining us as an Enneagram Type 2 wing 1. As someone who's spent years studying human behavior, it's such a treat to hear her insight on the Enneagram in general, and how she specifically experiences life and work as a Type 2.
You'll also hear:
- How she's folding in her Enneagram work outside of her day job
- What it looks like when her Type 8 Stress Arrow shows up
- What she's learned about her Type 4 Growth Arrow
- How she uses the Enneagram with couples and a key phrase she always starts with
- What the repressed Center of Intelligence (head, heart, body) can tell us about the disconnect we have with someone else
- The most creative and fun way to use the Enneagram for authors or anyone interested in creating fictional characters
- Her best advice when making a career change
