43. What's Your Orientation to Time? And How to Use It in Your Marketing, Leadership and Personal Growth
Enneagram at Work
03/10/22 • 25 min
When a challenge comes up at work or home do you tend to:
A) reflect back on how things went the last time something like this came up, looking to the past to help you determine how to handle this situation ?
B) focus in on the problem right in front of you to determine what needs to be done right now, sometimes forgetting that you've overcome challenges like this in the past and that it will eventually sort itself out in the future?
C) look to quickly move through the challenge, even if it's not fully resolved, so that you can get to a goal or ideal situation in the future?
Depending how you process and react to these challenges most of the time (not every time), will give you clues into which orientation to time you're using in your relationships, your work, and even in your marketing strategies.
Listen it today Episode 43 to learn more about what Orientation to Time is, how to find out which one you are, and how it can help you grow and better understand your teams and your buyers.

38. Igniting Your Inner Genius with Shannon Hughes, Type 7 (or 3!)
Enneagram at Work
01/27/22 • 64 min
I'm sure by now you've heard the advice to find and follow your genius, your superpower, to build an authentic and successful business.
Sounds great. Solid advice.
But, have you ever questioned what in the world that is for you? Maybe you can easily spot the genius of others, but when it comes to understanding your own, you're clueless?
A lot of time this happens because whatever that genius is, comes so freely and naturally, you don't even realize it's a thing.
If the answer happens to be yes for you, I definitely can relate to the idea of not seeing the label of your own jar as well and know you're going to get so much from today's conversation.
Our guest is CEO of Enlivened Studios, Leadership Coach, Interactive Speaker, and Experiential Team Trainer, Shannon Hughes.
Shannon combined her love for improv and experience in Corporate to create her business, Enlivened Studios. It's facilitation practice that uses improv-inspired techniques to bolster collaboration and communication through skills like listening, spontaneity and storytelling.
Inside this conversation you'll learn more about:
- Bringing clarity to what your inner genius is and how to use it
- Creative Leadership
- The benefits of an improv practice in your business (how it can help with your team, clients, and even networking with peers)
- The power of "yes, and..."
- Her morning practice
- What is a brave space (vs. safe space)
- Her story from VP of Client Strategy to burnout to Financial Ops Manager to feeling unfulfilled that eventually lead to her own business
- What most resonates with her as an Enneagram 7
- Why she started questioning if she might actually be a Type 3
She also shares three powerful statements she does inside her workshops with partners:
- "What I heard matters to you...."
- "What I'm curious about..."
- "What I want to honor about you..."
Listen in to find out exactly how to use these questions, how to find and connect with your inner genius, and how to infuse creativity and curiosity in your leadership, coaching, and networking skills.

I never thought I'd see the words Grief Coach and Type 7 in a sentence together, so when Olivia Myles reached out and told me which type she most identifies with and what she did in her business, I had to hear more about her and her work.
On the Enneagram, Type Sevens are also called The Enthusiast, The Adventurer, and The Optimist.
They are known for their glass-is-half-full and rose-colored glasses outlook on life. They bring joy, fun, and energy to any room they walk into.
The reason behind a lot this is because deep down, Sevens are running from uncomfortable feelings. You'll find them busy in their business or out for an adventure because sitting still with their own thoughts and what might come up is too much to handle.
Their core defense mechanism is reframing so that even when painful or uncomfortable situations do occur, they retell themselves (and others) the story, but with a positive spin on it (#toxicpositivity)...
"Well, at least you didn't run over two dogs!"
"What are you complaining about? You could be in [fill in the blank with third world country] right now!"
"Don't be sad, there's so much else to look forward to!"
"They could have stolen double that!"
Like any type on the Enneagram, the more self-awareness and intentional personal growth a person pursues, the less like the stereotype they'll look and that's exactly what my guest today has done.
In this episode with Grief Recovery Coach, Olivia Myles, you'll hear:
- her journey of loss and grief of a child
- after years of living the same day over, how she learned to keep his memory alive without the pain
- why the saying, "Time heals all wounds" is untrue and what you actually need to heal
- the many other types of grief outside of loss of a loved one that most people are have experienced at some point in their lives
- the unhealthy expectations our culture has created around grieving and what we should really be doing instead
- how she uses her gifts of a Type 7 in her grief recovery work with clients
For anyone needing to process grief of any kind - a loss, a move, a career change, a relationship change, etc. Olivia hosts grief recovery groups and works with clients 1:1 to process in a healthy, healing way.
Learn more about her work and reach out with any questions about grief and how she can help you process and heal.

40. Leaving Behind a Good Career to Leave a Mark with a New One with Demetria January, Type 8
Enneagram at Work
02/10/22 • 43 min
“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.” – Steve Jobs
When you look back from where you are now to where you've been, do you see how your own dots are connected?
For my guest today on the Enneagram MBA podcast, this couldn't be more true.
Now a Licensed Therapist, Demetria January started her career in quality auditing for a large corporation when she started to feel stuck, miserable and controlled.
She wasn't sure what she wanted to be doing, but that wasn't it.
It took a flyer in the mail and a story her mom reminded her of back from high school for it to click about how good she was at having difficult conversations with boldness and directness, but also with empathy and understanding.
As someone who identifies with Type 8 energy, this comes very natural for her and a gift she wasn't able to use in a career that by normal standards was a "good job." So, despite also valuing stability and certainty, she made a bold decision to bet on herself.
She quit her job to go back to school and become a mental health professional where she would better use her natural strengths and gift herself more control of her own time and work (something core to a Type 8), by becoming a therapist, specializing in anxiety and trauma based disorders.
If you've ever felt the pull that you were made for more than where you're at now, be sure and listen in to this one and be inspired by Demetria's story and the advice she offers to others thinking of making a big change.

Do you find yourself giving great advice and being generous, supportive, and understanding with others?
"You did a great job with that! How are you going to celebrate?"
"We all have those days. Nothing is wrong with you."
"Everyone needs a break. I'm in support of you getting rested."
But then when a situation presents itself to apply that same advice to yourself, you don't take it - resting, celebrating, forgiving. None of that applies to you because you don't deserve it or your situation is so different, right?
Our guest today explains why we do this to ourselves and how to think about it a different way, so that we can gift ourselves that same love and care that we so freely give to others.
Dr. Rebekah Tennyson is a Clinical Psychologist with a degree in Social and Political Sciences from the University of Cambridge and a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Oxford.
She's co-host of a Drop in the Bucket podcast, a trained Enneagram coach with Enneagram University, has completed an Externship in Emotion Focused Therapy, and other training courses in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy/DNA-V, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy skills, and Narrative Exposure Therapy.
And in this episode, she's also joining us as an Enneagram Type 2 wing 1. As someone who's spent years studying human behavior, it's such a treat to hear her insight on the Enneagram in general, and how she specifically experiences life and work as a Type 2.
You'll also hear:
- How she's folding in her Enneagram work outside of her day job
- What it looks like when her Type 8 Stress Arrow shows up
- What she's learned about her Type 4 Growth Arrow
- How she uses the Enneagram with couples and a key phrase she always starts with
- What the repressed Center of Intelligence (head, heart, body) can tell us about the disconnect we have with someone else
- The most creative and fun way to use the Enneagram for authors or anyone interested in creating fictional characters
- Her best advice when making a career change

Have you ever thought, even just for a minute, what it would be like to live life on the road?
Back in 2020, I became obsessed with the idea. Like pretty much everyone, I was ready to shake things up after a year of feeling isolated and trapped during a pandemic.
I started dreaming of downsizing, selling my home, and buying an RV! I joined Facebook groups (they even have single mom RV living groups!) and read articles to prep and know what to expect.
I was ready to get out there and have nature be my son's education and my therapy.
For a lot of reasons, that obviously didn't happen for me, but for my guest today, it did!
A year ago, she sold (almost!) everything, bought an RV, and started her unconventional life on the road.
Selfishly I wanted to bring her on because I wanted to hear all about it :)
But regardless if you also have had the dream of RV life, you're going to get so much from this one because who hasn't had a pull to do something unconventional? To drop the shoulds, of who you should be, or what you should do, or how you should do something? I know that's something anyone listening to this podcast has felt.
And at the same time, you've probably also felt the fear of uncertainty and of the unknown to actually go through with your "crazy" idea.
In this episode, executive coach and leadership development trainer, Laura Leaton, shares all about what lead up to that decision, all the fears she faced as you made plans to go through with it, and what she's learned from a year of working and living in a camper van!
You'll also hear us talk about her top three Enneagram types - 2, 3 or 7 - and how after a year of intense growth and personal development, the stereotypical tendencies and common behaviors of the types aren't really showing up for her, so you'll hear what to focus on instead.
I can't wait for you to hear from Laura inside this interview.
After you've had a chance to listen, be sure and connect with her to follow along with her adventure and to let her know what you are taking away from this episode!

Leslie Lyons is a business strategist, sales coach, soul whisperer, and speaker who helps brick-and-mortar bosses sell in a way that comes naturally, find their true leadership style, and build a soul-driven sales strategy.
She believes that the two most important things a leader can understand are: 1). How they see themselves and 2) How the world sees them. It's a game changer when it comes to leading a team well.
In this episode, Leslie gives us a behind the scenes look into life and entrepreneurship as a Type 8, how her shadows have impacted her leadership growth, and how each of us can embrace our inner 8 energy to sale and lead with decisiveness, confidence and power.
Listen in to hear more insight that will absolutely impact how you show up in your business.
3 Key Takeaways:
- The Enneagram is best personality test out of all of them if you truly want to experience transformation.
- To be more powerful we need to connect with our authentic selves and understand what we actually want. As women, so many of us are out of touch with our desires so it's extremely unlikely we'll ever get what we really want.
- You don't think twice about gushing about and recommending your favorite sushi restaurant. You don't need to give yourself a pep talk before you tell a friend about it. Use that same energy to sell yourself and your business.

Inside this episode we are are getting into some "current events" - The Kardashians!
Specifically what Kim shared as her best advice for women in business. While I didn't love it and thought it was interesting advice coming from her, I did love reading all the conversation it spurred on both side of the hustle aisle.
Because this is the Enneagram MBA you'll hear about hustling through the lens of the Enneagram and the different ways we can hustle. Tune it to hear about:
- the different types of hustle that I learned from my Human Design friend Lauren Armstrong (@laurenearmstrong_ on Instagram).
- What hustle tends to look like based on each type and ultimately what they're running towards and away from
- A cautionary note about anti-hustle and the one thing to focus on based on your type
