Chit Chat with the Brenda's - Reframing the Stereotype
On our very first chit chat, we each share a stereotype that has followed us throughout our lives.
As Latinas, these stereotypes can impact us in a negative manner and can destroy our essence as a person. In this episode, we share how it’s important to not let that stereotype take control of our lives and to reframe it in our favor.
We both have experienced being stereotyped in work, school, and personal lives.
It wasn’t easy to reframe the stereotype and least of all to embrace it in the most positive way, but we were able to.
At the end of the day, the only important thing that matters is that your essence is still intact and that you remember that you’re not alone in this fight.
In this episode, we talk about
0:58 - “Those who survive the stereotypes of society without losing an ounce of their essence can deal with everything and anything.”
2:11 - Stereotypes that have affected Latinas and how to rise above it
3:20 - Just because we’re Latinas and we’re passionate doesn’t mean we’re fiery.
5:00 - Latina women being too passionate in the workplace
10:00 - Brenda Hernández seeing the challenge of the passionate Latina stereotype as an opportunity
12:48 - Latinas in leadership roles and the fear of sounding like a bitch
15:03 - Reframing the passionate Latina stereotype
17:37 - Take your passion to a company that deserves and embrace it
19:36 - Why would you assume that Brenda Deshazer would bring tamales to a potluck?
22:04 - Mexicans don’t make tamales for Christmas Eve dinner
22:47 - Brenda Deshazer taking a Gender and Cultural Differences Seminar
23:28 - Latina domestic workers are still GREAT WOMEN
27:27 - Serving the men of the family is deeply rooted in the Latinx culture.
28:40 - Embrace the stereotype because it’s not the highlight of who you are.
