This is the first part with Dr Jamie Goode, who has a PhD in plant biology, was originally a science editor and then got the wine bug. Since then he has travelled to thousands of wineries, founded the incredibly successful wine blog https://wineanorak.com/ which features wineries, wine regions and wine topics of interest and has published several wine books. 25.57: Understanding aromas and compounds could create fake wine

32.41: What is light strike and why is it bad?

33.41: What is Brettanomyces and is it a bad or a good thing in wine?

In this really fun episode (or at least it was for me to record) we are going to dig deeper into the rich tapestry of Spain's indigenous white grape varieties. After a request for an episode on the white grapes of Spain, followed by Decanter magazine's February edition, spotlighting Spain's vibrant wine scene, I explore the nuances of some of Spain’s most interesting native whites, curated from their top scoring whites featured in the publication.

With over a hundred native grape varieties, this episode is zoning in on the lesser-known gems of Xarel·lo, Airén, Treixadura, Albillo Real, Hondarrabi Zuri, and Vijariego Blanco. And along the way, you will also discover the wine regions that they come from. Join us as we embark on a journey to uncover the essence of Spain's white wine heritage, the nation’s evolving viticultural landscape and the experimentation happening within. Enjoy!

Today in Part 2 of our conversation with Norbert Reinisch from Braida Winery. We now journey into the fascinating world of Barbera, the grape variety that has seen a revolution due to Braida’s founder, Giacomo Bologna who believed in this grape when so many others had pigeon holed it as ‘just for cheap wine production’. His dedication to experiment and innovate with barriques has led to their flagship wine Bricco dell’Uccelone being one of the most famous Barberas being made.

By the end of this episode, you'll acquire a nuanced understanding of its bright acidity, lush fruit notes, and the diverse expressions it unveils. We navigate through the regions where Barbera thrives and gain insights into its slightly checkered history – a narrative that adds layers to its story and deepens our appreciation for the profound connection between Braida Winery and Barbera.
