Title: How to Think More About Sex Subtitle: The School of Life Author: Alain de Botton Narrator: David Thorpe Format: Unabridged Length: 3 hrs and 21 mins Language: English Release date: 12-24-12 Publisher: Macmillan Audio Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 128 votes Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind Publisher's Summary: We don't think too much about sex; we're merely thinking about it in the wrong way. So asserts Alain de Botton in this rigorous and supremely honest book designed to help us navigate the intimate and exciting - yet often confusing and difficult - experience that is sex. Few of us tend to feel we're entirely normal when it comes to sex, and what were supposed to be feeling rarely matches up with the reality. This audiobook argues that 21st-century sex is ultimately fated to be a balancing act between love and desire, and adventure and commitment. Covering topics that include lust, fetishism, adultery, and pornography, Alain de Botton frankly articulates the dilemmas of modern sexuality, offering insights and consolation to help us think more deeply and wisely about the sex we are, or arent, having. Members Reviews: Realistic Relationship Expectations A realistic look at the positives and negatives of long term relationships and thr sexual human experience. Depressing and humorous. Partially wise but mostly paternalistic Despite having some wise observations here and there De Botton has a very paternalistic tone all over the book. I find his little exemplary stories awkward and full of annoying stereotypes and the chapter on internet porn prudeish, parodic and obtuse. How to Think About Sex as Only Sex Would you listen to How to Think More About Sex again? Why? I listened to it twice. I would consider listening again. It is full of brilliant insights and observations. What was one of the most memorable moments of How to Think More About Sex? I liked his description early on about a couple's first date and his description of what they were both experiencing and why. What does David Thorpe bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book? He has a rich voice and does justice to the articulate text. What did you learn from How to Think More About Sex that you would use in your daily life? Intimate relationships are complicated imperfect things. If we adjust our expectations we can appreciate relationships and sex for what they are rather than having pie-in-the-sky expectations. Any additional comments? Great book. I can think of 100 people I could recommend it to. amazing work this is the best book I've ever read. It tackles the issues in my life in a way that no other book has come close to. brilliant once you get a feel for the authors method of "argument you will find that these poignant thoughts and reflections are very valuable to any one of the age of Sexual Maturity or immaturity for that matter

Writing Down Your Soul Audiobook by Janet Conner

Title: Writing Down Your Soul Subtitle: How to Activate and Listen to the Extraordinary Voice Within Author: Janet Conner Narrator: Jane Cramer Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 49 mins Language: English Release date: 01-08-13 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 379 votes Genres: Science & Technology, Psychology & The Mind Publisher's Summary: You could pray, or meditate, or dream, or visit a shaman, or a minister, or a hypnotherapist. With so many routes into inner consciousness, why write? Of all the ways to get in touch with God, as you understand God...to hear the small, still voice pointing you in the right direction...why take the time to write? One reason: it works. It works amazingly well. If you want to engage in a vibrant conversation with the wisdom that dwells just a hair below your conscious awareness, write. Write every day, at approximately the same time, with passion, honesty, and the intention of speaking with and listening to the voice within. Janet Conner was escaping a terrible situation of domestic abuse. While trying to figure out how she and her son could live and how they could eat, she realized she had hit rock bottom. With no other advisors, she listened to her own inner voice, which told her to start writing. As she did, Janet's inner voice gained clarity and strength, and she felt an incredible connection to the divine, and almost immediately miracles began to happen. Today, research scientists in psychology, physics, biochemistry, and neurology are providing peeks into what consciousness is and how it works. Their findings give us intriguing clues as to what is actually happening in and through our bodies, minds, and spirits as we roll pen across paper. Writing Down Your Soul explores some of this research and instructs listeners how to access the power and beauty of their own deepest selves. Members Reviews: Five stars for Content, Two for Context Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why? This is a challenging review for me. I find myself wholly and emphatically accepting many aspects of this book: You cannot hear your soul unless you know how to listen, and listening takes a stated intention. I believe the author offers outstanding advice on how to do this. However, other aspects of the book I find myself rejecting outright, and taking umbrage with. These include many of the examples offered of responses to soul questions: One participant stated she wanted sunglasses, and lo, the very next day, she won $150 Ray Bans. I also found the author to be very prescriptive - too much so. However, whenever the author refers back to her prescriptive guide to meditative writing, she gives an example of someone who breaks that and succeeds, tacitly offering the option to accept or disregard steps as preferred ( as an example: Read for 5 or more minutes before writing. After one session, a participant reported that she reads afterward, and it works for her.) In the end I found true value in the book. The reading was strong. I would recommend it to others. What about Jane Cramers performance did you like? The reading was smooth and consistent. What did you learn from Writing Down Your Soul that you would use in your daily life? The deep value I took from this book came in less than 30 words: Address the voice directly, Write fast, Ask lots of questions, Write whatever comes - Open your heart and mind all the way, and just say what wants to be said. Any additional comments? At time the book felt male-phobic. The vast majority of protagonists are divorced females, with the antagonists described as ex-husbands, fathers and male teachers.
