Docs Till Death

Docs Till Death

Punko Destructo, Esq.

A punk podcast where old punks discuss punk and hardcore movies in a very punk way. We ridicule filmmakers for their limited knowledge of punk canon, their corny and sentimental affinity for regional scenes, and their technical ineptitude -- but we also praise the few that "rise above" (wink wink). And we'd love for you to join us, but please consider yourself warned, 'cause we're "bringin' da noise, bringin' da punk!"

Greetings DTD-ers! You ARE in the right place! Please don't let the subject of today's episode confuse you. This is still Docs Till Death, and it's still THE premiere punk podcast; however, with this episode, we've decided to spread our wings (in a no-growth, immature kind of way) and pay a visit to metal, punk's cousin on its father's side. That's right! We're discussing SOME KIND OF MONSTER, Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's 2004 Metallica documentary. And to commemorate this groundbreaking DTD episode, we're sharing a little poem we wrote about the experience of listening to this very special "crossover" episode: Listen and you will see More is all you need Dedicated to Entertaining you Downloading faster Uncontrolled laughter Your heart beats faster Uncontrolled laughter Laughter Sounds fun, right!? So listen NOW and obey your laughter!

Attention Docs-Till-Death-Heads! Break out your passports ‘cause we’re heading overseas to spend time with Punk in Africa. That’s right, it’s our first international doc! And not only did this movie introduce us to a significant cultural moment in early 80s South Africa, it also made us question whether we can say that we truly understand the term “punk.” Listen now, and get lost with us in the swell of floating signifiers!

Docs Till Death - The First Annual Grohlies (A Very Special Episode)
play

09/20/21 • 48 min

We know we said we were taking a full month off, but WE CAN’T QUIT YOU! So we’re back with a very special episode that doubles as an award show. We get real serious with each other (letters are opened, some are read, and truths are spoken); then we disregard any effort towards self improvement and instead jump right into our first annual GROHLIES, the awards (named after the almighty Dave Grohl of THEM SIDEWAYS VULCANS fame) that we give out to somewhat random aspects of the movies we watched in season one. This is a very silly one! What’s more... you don’t even need to watch a movie to not really follow what we’re talking about, so give it a listen, then smash that subscribe button!

Attention, Doc-Heads! That time has come -- whether you're prepared or not, and how could you be? It's certainly impossible to even begin to imagine what might be in store when you sit down to listen to the DTD crew sit down and discuss the movie that no less than ROLLING STONES positions as #2 on their "Best Punk Rock Movies of All Time" list. That's right: ROLLING STONES. #2. WOW! Well, in case you haven't grasped what that means (and if you're someone who skipped the title of this episode), it means that this week we're discussing Julien Temple's THE FILTH AND THE FURY -- the movie Rolling Stones deems a classic, and a #2. Wait, what? That doesn't make sense. Guess you'll have to listen to find out if we resolve the apparent contradiction.

This week, the DTD crew delivers it's first mini-sode, and its a good one! And you can believes us about that, because we're impartial. For the most part, the episode is an apologia for being unapologetic. But we also touch on the ways jam bands have influenced Geoff, Dave Grohl, punk house disagreements, and spooky Halloween-themed punk bands (ever heard of a little band called The Misfits?). Probably not, but you should give them a listen... AFTER you listen to this Podcast Awards nominated episode.

Docs Till Death - HATED: GG Allin-acula, Dead and HATED It
play

10/17/21 • 82 min

We're ba-aaack!!! That‘s right, ghouls and goblins, it’s October and Season 2 of Docs Till Death kicks off with Todd Phillip’s spooky tale of existential dread, "HATED: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies". But Phillip‘s peek into the glory hole that is the life and times of GG Allin isn’t just a great watch for the Halloween season; since his death, even more than during his life, this is GG’s world, and we at DTD are just trying to figure out how to get by — without getting hit by one of those fecal smothered hot dogs. So join us as we discuss all things GG, except his penis size (what kind of hacks do you take us for?!?!?).

Docs Till Death - AFRO-PUNK: The Year That Afro-Punk Broke
play

11/29/21 • 81 min

Hey there, Doc-Heads! Your friendly neighborhood podcast hosts are back, and this week we're discussing James Spooner's seminal film, AFRO-PUNK. As always, we raise a series of important questions -- like whether it makes more sense to call the film a "documentary" or a "conversation"? what counts as valid commentary when you are not a film's (or any work of art's) intended audience? and, of course, is that a framed press photo of Ashes behind Chaka? We also laugh way too much at our own jokes... but not in a RHCP sort of way (SPOILER ALERT!). Are you confused now? Do you want to know what about what we've just said is a spoiler? Might we be suggesting that the RHCP have returned to the fold? Guess you're gonna have to listen and find out!

Docs Till Death - SLC PUNK: Portrait of a Serial Killer
play

08/30/21 • 100 min

Some of you are probably asking “Are they seriously discussing SLC PUNK?!” In response, we’d like to assure you, “Yes. Yes we are.” But if you aren’t following this hypothetical conversation, you’re probably asking, “What the hell are they talking about?” In that case, we’d like to explain: “We are discussing SLC PUNK for the final review-based episode of season one of Docs Till Death, the punk podcast where old punks discuss punk and hardcore documentaries in a very punk way.” We’d also probably add, “while it might seem on, especially given our name, that we're discussing something other than a documentary, we’re always open to trying out new things (kink). And since SLC PUNK has become something of a sacred cow for many punks who came of age in the late 90s, we figured that we'd ceremonially slaughter that milk machine to cap off our immensely successful first season.”

Docs Till Death - AMERICAN HARDCORE gives David Byrne a run for his $
play

08/09/21 • 89 min

It’s time, Doc-heads! We’re back and we’re more like a family than ever before — with Grandpa Pete having senior moments and declaring his love for the "Big Brains" (?!?), Geoff Daddy letting you know that he’s really disappointed, and Young Matt refusing to stop f’n around with those g'damn devil sticks. Hear all this and more in our new episode on American Hardcore. It’s a classic, and OMG, there are SO MANY hc luminary talking heads in this one. But don't stress, ‘cause we sort it all out (by spending way too much time talking about just a select few key players, including Flea and xMobyx). See! We got you covered!

Docs Till Death - SALAD DAYS: the Beginning of the End
play

08/16/21 • 102 min

It’s that time, Doc-heads! We’re back and this week we’re discussing Salad Days, which we just learned is about the almighty DC hardcore scene (and not the various tasty combinations of greens, other vegetables, fruits, and nuts). You learn something new every day! Anyway, after we overcame our initial disappointment, we discovered a doc that has much to appreciate (including Thirsting More, Egg Hunt, and Beefeater) — even though tomatoes are NEVER EVEN MENTIONED! But we got you covered, smothered, and chunked. So press play and lettuce bring you da heat!
