The Doc, U R... Podcast aims to empower physicians (from medical school and beyond) and combat the stigmas surrounding their mental health and diminish physicians affected by limiting beliefs, working small, and burnout. We aim to increase awareness and education about physicians' and other healthcare workers' mental health challenges.

The objective of the podcast is to de-stigmatize physicians' mental health. The goals are to humanize physicians, bring awareness to their healing needs, advance our understanding of suicide to strategically prevent suicide attempts. The theme this season is “Navigating Mental Health & Medicine: The Cost of Burnout.”

This week, Dr. Kiki speaks with Dr. Cassandra D Akin about the mental health challenges doctors face throughout the different stages of their careers, explore some of the different strategies each use to deal with them and how God has helped guide them on their journeys.

Dr. Cassandra Akin is a board-certified Family Medicine Physician. She is a graduate of Rutgers University, Douglass College where she received her bachelor's in Biology. Her studies continued at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)- Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences where she obtained her master’s in Biomedical Sciences and then went on to earn her doctorate at UMDNJ- School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, NJ. Dr. Akin trained at the University of Massachusetts Fitchburg Family Medicine for her residency with a concentration on Global Health in Nicaragua. For the last 6 years, she has been working as a primary care provider at Harvard Beth Israel Lahey Health in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Outside of medicine, Dr. Akin has received her bachelor's in ministry and charitable services at the International College of Christian Ministries. She is very active in her church, and has had the opportunity to be a part of medical missions to Jamaica as well as Haiti.

Ronit is an experienced Project Management & Public Policy Professional. She obtained her Criminology MA (SSHRC recipient) from the University of Toronto and has Certificates in Non-Profit Management & Mediation. In 2021, she obtained her Professional Certificate in Project Management from UofT.

She has worked at the Ontario Public Service (Ontario Government) for over ten years in a variety of policy, program and project management roles. She currently serves as the Wellness Team Lead, implementing mental health and wellness initiatives and policies.

Ronit is also the Founder & Owner of RG Consulting, which is a business that provides clients with consulting services focused on project planning and career planning. She’s been a Speaker on Career panels and is a Mentor for the Monday Girl Platform and York University’s Take A Student to Engage Mentoring Program.

This week, Dr. Kiki speaks with Dr. Oluwatomi "Tomi" Mitchell about the shackles traditional medical practice places on physicians and the importance of advocating for each other in order to break them.

Dr. Tomi Mitchell is a Board-Certified Family Physician, and Certified Health & Wellness Coach with over a decade of experience running multiple businesses and being a mother and wife. She received her Coaching certification in 2021 and has been practicing Family Medicine since 2011, both inpatient (hospital-based) and outpatient (clinic-based). She uses the four principles of family medicine to guide her holistic wellness practice and focuses on providing client-centered “whole person” care. As both a family physician and a certified holistic wellness coach, Dr. Mitchell is committed to providing a “whole person” approach to wellness.
