41: The Different Roles in a Recording Project

Have you ever thought "oh, this song will take me 2 hours to complete" only to find that you're still working through details a week (or a year!) later?
There is a LOT to do to get an idea into a finished song. Who will write the lyrics? Do we need a guitar part in the bridge? How will we record the drums? Who will edit vocals? Will we outsource mixing or DIY?
All of these different tasks and questions can start to seem overwhelming - especially if you're a completely solo DIY artist.
We've found that it can be very helpful to break this process down into different groups of tasks and, instead of thinking about "people", we will think about "roles". This method of grouping asks can prove to be a very helpful thought exercise whether you're in a band or hacking through it completely on your own because it helps you understand what needs to be done, who will do it, and how to stay focused on the task at hand instead of jumping around wildly from task to task.
In this episode you will learn:
- Why different roles are important to consider - even (and perhaps especially) in a DIY recording situation
- What the different roles in the recording process are
- How to use the concept of roles to maximize your focus and productivity
- Ben's funny story about running into a quirky role in a commercial Nashville studio
- Why the guys love Eddie Van Halen - the guitar legend, not the vampire slayer.

If you enjoy our podcast, please leave a quick rating. It only takes a minute and it means the world to us.
You've probably noticed an uptick in live streaming since the pandemic pumped the brakes on the live show industry.
In the early days of the pandemic live streaming was a free-for-all.
Now that some of the dust has settled a few things have become clear.
1) Live streaming is here to stay - even when live shows return.
2) Live streaming is one of the best (and most fun) ways to engage with your audience.
3) Just like anything else, it helps to have clear goals and strategies in place.
In this episode we talk to Leonard Patterson - who's not only kicked the live streaming tires, he's taking the concept on a full tilt, off-road test drive. He's learned a lot and has since been helping other musicians get their live streaming game on point.
In this episode you will learn:
- How to make live streaming a fun and interactive part of your content strategy
- Why streaming is not just a temporary replacement for, but a natural extension of live shows
- Which platforms are available and how to choose one that works for you
- Why you don't need a ton of material to do a consistent live stream feed
- The right (and wrong) way to start a live stream
- How to repurpose your live stream to create additional content
- The three levels of live stream production
- Tips for live streaming with multiple people (e.g., your band)
- Ideas for monetizing your live stream

Many of our preconceived notions about what MIDI is and isn't are wrong. As we discussed in Episode 20, MIDI is really your studio BFF. You just have to know when to use it, how to use it, and the tips and tricks for making it sound like the real thing.
In this episode, we'll show you how you can pull this trick off on your own productions.
You will learn:
- A quick overview of what MIDI is (and isn't)
- What makes a real instrument performance enjoyable and pleasant to listen to and why MIDI sometimes misses the mark
