Fethard Walking Tour Audio Guide

Join us on a walk through time in Fethard, Tipperary, to discover one of Ireland’s best medieval walled towns

Take a self-guided tour along the Butler Trail to explore Fethard, one of the finest medieval walled towns in Ireland.

This audio guide will lead you around the beautiful historic walled town of Fethard, Tipperary. On our journey, we will discover the remains of ancient castles, magnificent churches and walk beside one of the best-preserved medieval town walls in Ireland.

We will hear stories of fascinating people, including the town’s founder William de Braose. A favourite of King John of England, de Braose spent many years in Wales, where he earned the nickname the ‘Ogre of Abergavenny’ due to his brutal treatment of the local people. We will also hear about the Butler family, one of Tipperary’s most famous dynasties. From their role as governors who limited the destruction of the town by Cromwell’s army, to football players who narrowly escaped death in Croke Park on Bloody Sunday, the Butler’s of Fethard are deeply entwined with the history of the town.

Our tour begins at one of the historic bridges into the town and leads you around the town’s key historic sites. We will see Fethard’s famous sheela-na-gigs, and we will stand in the shadow of numerous medieval buildings, including Court Castle and Edmond’s Castle. We will also visit the famous Tholsel, one of the largest surviving 17th-century urban structures in Ireland. The Tholsel is now home to the Fethard Horse Country Experience, which showcases the incredible success stories of local horse racing giants such as Nijinsky and Galileo.

On our journey, we will follow the ghostly beat of the town’s medieval guards as they paced the town’s extensive walls and gates. These defenders would have looked on in horror from the town’s walls as the armies of Lord Inchiquin and the English Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell marched towards Fethard in the 17th century The guide will then take us to the town’s 14th century Augustinian abbey. Eight centuries of history is written into the fabric of this town, which will be revealed in this audio tour. As we shall see, to walk around Fethard is to travel through time!

The Kildare Town Walking Tour Audio Guide will lead you on a journey through Kildare’s ancient past to the town of today

Kildare’s origins stretch into the distant past. Overlooking the Curragh to the south-east stands Dún Áilinne, the seasonal home for a series of ancient Leinster Kings, and the legendary band of ancient warriors, the Fianna, hunted over the plains of the Curragh. It is with the arrival of a devout woman that this area became famous throughout Ireland and throughout the Christian world. Kildare, derives from the Irish ‘Cill Dara’ meaning Church of the Oak. It was named after the church founded here under an oak tree by St Brigid in the 5th century. Over time Kildare developed into a great “Monastic City, a place where visitors and pilgrims were welcome and plentiful, a place famous across Europe.

Kildare became a key base for the Norman invaders and their famous leader Strongbow, and on our journey we will learn how Kildare was the scene of tragedy during the 1798 Uprising. In its later history, Kildare became a venue for aristocratic horse racing enthusiasts, and a vital stage in Ireland’s first great motor race. Our audio guide is the perfect companion for your self-guided tour through time in Kildare.

Welcome to Graiguenamanagh, a picturesque and historic town in Ireland’s Ancient East

Nestled in a fertile valley, Graiguenamanagh is almost entirely surrounded by hills, including Brandon Hill, the tallest summit in Kilkenny. To the east are the striking peaks of the Blackstairs Mountains, while to the south, the fast-flowing waters of the River Barrow rush by. Graiguenamanagh’s story begins over 800 years ago, with the founding of Duiske Abbey by William Marshal, one of the most powerful medieval magnates of the 13th century. Twelve Cistercian monks from Wiltshire settled in the abbey and became some of the town’s earliest inhabitants. In fact, the name Graiguenamanagh, or Gráig na Manach means “village of the Monks” in Irish.

In addition to the abbey, the audio guide provides information on some of the remarkable characters who once called Graiguenamanagh home. They include the high and mighty, like the members of the powerful Butler family; the revolutionaries, like 1798 Rebellion leader Captain Thomas Cheevers; and the ordinary townspeople, like the O’Learys, who were blamed for the Great Chicago Fire. You will also have the chance to visit the castle of Tinnahinch, cross the mighty River Barrow, and squeeze through what might just be the narrowest alley in the world!

Besides its weighty history and fantastic stories, Graiguenamanagh is an excellent place to enjoy the outdoors. You can rent boats and sail along the River Barrow, hike up Mt Brandon or take a nice stroll in Silaire wood. In August, the town hosts the annual Regatta, which sees hundreds of spectators throng the banks to watch local and visiting competitors battle it out in diving competitions, swimming and boat races. This isn’t the only major festival the town hosts; in September, crowds gather for the ‘Town of Books’ Festival, which transforms Graiguenamanagh into an open-air book shop for one weekend.

Our audio guide will help you to discover all the highlights of the town while introducing you to some of the many tales that make Graiguenamanagh such a special place.
