Take a self-guided tour through time to discover the remarkable stories of Portlaoise

This Audio Guide will lead you through the streets of this influential Laois town. Discover the origins of Portlaoise as a ‘Plantation Town’ during the Tudor Period, when it was known as Maryborough after Queen Mary. As one of the major towns of Ireland, Portlaoise has long been a major commercial and retail hub for the Midlands.

Our tour will help you to travel through time, to hear about how Portlaoise developed to become one of Ireland’s most important towns and the individual lives that influenced its story. Figures like the Irish patriot James Fintan Lalor, the ‘Father of the Irish Railways’ William Dargan and the infamous highwayman Grant the Robber. Discover Dublin’s Historic Graveyards

Discover the story of the Huguenot Cemetery on Merrion Row, one of Dublin’s most historic graveyards

Located in the heart of Dublin City, Merrion Row Cemetery is nestled between notable landmarks such as St Stephen’s Green, the Shelbourne Hotel and O’Donoghue’s Bar. Despite its setting on one of Dublin’s busiest thoroughfares, the cemetery is a quiet oasis where the capital’s historic non-conforming Huguenot population have found a place to rest.

The Huguenots were French Calvinists who arrived in Ireland in the late 1600s when the Edict of Nantes was revoked by France’s ‘Sun King’ Louis XIV. Prior to this, they had enjoyed a large amount of religious freedom in predominantly Catholic France. With religious tensions high, many Huguenots fled to Ireland to start a new life. It was this first community that founded the cemetery in Merrion Row in 1693. For over three hundred years, the cemetery has been carefully maintained by the French Huguenot Fund. This charity was set up in 1716 to provide financial and practical support to the impoverished Huguenot refugees and continued to pay for the rental of the site, a sum of £2 a year, to this day.

In this audio guide, you will hear about the Huguenots’ tragic tale, which led them to flee France. We will learn how this cemetery was established, who the non-conforming Huguenots were and how they differed from the conforming Huguenots buried in Cabbage Garden Cemetery. We hear the story of some of the families buried in this hallowed ground, including the Du Bedats from Agen and the D’Oliers from Montauban, who D’Olier Street near O’Connell Bridge is named after. Throughout the guide, we will hear from Dr Marie Léoutre, professional historian and Chair of the Irish Section of the Huguenot Society of Great Britain & Ireland, who provides more detail on the Huguenot experience in Ireland.

Discover Dublin’s Historic Graveyards

Discover the story of Ballybough Jewish Cemetery, one of Dublin’s most historic graveyards

The oldest and longest continuously used Jewish cemetery in Ireland is almost completely obscured from view behind a high wall along the busy R803. Founded over three hundred years ago in 1718, Ballybough Cemetery is the final resting place of generations of Dublin’s Jewish community. In this quiet corner of Dublin city, you will find the final resting places of Lewis Wormser Harris and Moses Jacob Owen. The former was to become the Lord Mayor of Dublin until his untimely death the day before he was due to take office; the latter was an acrobat from Polish Prussia. These are just two of the interesting characters you will hear about in this audio guide.

By the late 1890s, Ballybough Cemetery fell into disuse when a new graveyard in Dolphin’s Barn was established, closer to where the Jewish community in Dublin lived. The final burial took place in 1958, and the burial ground was officially closed twenty years later. By 2017, two hundred and ninety-nine years after the cemetery was founded, it came under the care of Dublin City Council.

This audio guide will share the story of Ballybough Cemetery and help you discover the history of the Jewish people in Ireland. Follow the guide to learn more about the interesting features within the cemetery walls, including the mortuary house, Jewish symbols on graves and the use of the Hebrew calendar, which is three thousand years ahead of the Gregorian calendar. We will also hear from Yvonne Altman O’Connor of the Irish Jewish Museum and Rabbi Lent, the Chief Rabbi of Ireland, who talk about modern Judaism in Ireland and some of the burial practices associated with the Jewish religion.

Discover Dublin’s Historic Graveyards

Discover the story of St James’ Church & Graveyard in the Liberties, one of Dublin’s most historic cemeteries.

In the heart of Dublin’s vibrant Liberties, you can find a centuries-old place that links the city’s past with its present; St. James’s Church & Graveyard. Located virtually across the road from the famous Guinness Storehouse, hundreds of thousands of people pass by the gates of St James’s every year. Still, very few know the intriguing story of this hallowed place.

Beneath the modern glass spire and 19th-century church turn distillery is a graveyard with medieval roots. Since its foundation in the 12th century until the final burial in 1989, it is estimated that over one hundred thousand people from all walks of life have been laid to rest here, including aristocrats, paupers and revolutionaries.

In this audio guide, produced on behalf of Dublin City Council, you will be taken on a journey through time to discover the intriguing lives of those buried here. You will hear about Sir Theobald Butler’s rise to success and how he signed the Treaty of Limerick, which sealed his brother’s fate. You will also learn about revolutionary John O’Grady and his tragic role in the 1916 Rising.

We will then follow in the footsteps of pilgrims on the Camino and discover how the church catered to both the Protestant and Catholic communities living in St James’s parish. Throughout the guide, we will be joined by Dublin City Council Historian in Residence Cathy Scuffil, who sheds light on the local community, historical burial practices and some interesting characters interred here.

Over the last eight hundred years, the graveyard has been connected to a Catholic church, a Protestant church, a lighting emporium and a distillery. Nowadays, this historical graveyard is in the care of Dublin City Council, who have undertaken essential conservation work over the last number of years. In this guide, you will hear about this much-needed work which allows the surviving memorials in St James’s graveyard to be around for future generations to enjoy.

Take a self-guided tour along the Butler Trail to explore Fethard, one of the finest medieval walled towns in Ireland.

This audio guide will lead you around the beautiful historic walled town of Fethard, Tipperary. On our journey, we will discover the remains of ancient castles, magnificent churches and walk beside one of the best-preserved medieval town walls in Ireland.

We will hear stories of fascinating people, including the town’s founder William de Braose. A favourite of King John of England, de Braose spent many years in Wales, where he earned the nickname the ‘Ogre of Abergavenny’ due to his brutal treatment of the local people. We will also hear about the Butler family, one of Tipperary’s most famous dynasties. From their role as governors who limited the destruction of the town by Cromwell’s army, to football players who narrowly escaped death in Croke Park on Bloody Sunday, the Butler’s of Fethard are deeply entwined with the history of the town.

Our tour begins at one of the historic bridges into the town and leads you around the town’s key historic sites. We will see Fethard’s famous sheela-na-gigs, and we will stand in the shadow of numerous medieval buildings, including Court Castle and Edmond’s Castle. We will also visit the famous Tholsel, one of the largest surviving 17th-century urban structures in Ireland. The Tholsel is now home to the Fethard Horse Country Experience, which showcases the incredible success stories of local horse racing giants such as Nijinsky and Galileo.

On our journey, we will follow the ghostly beat of the town’s medieval guards as they paced the town’s extensive walls and gates. These defenders would have looked on in horror from the town’s walls as the armies of Lord Inchiquin and the English Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell marched towards Fethard in the 17th century The guide will then take us to the town’s 14th century Augustinian abbey. Eight centuries of history is written into the fabric of this town, which will be revealed in this audio tour. As we shall see, to walk around Fethard is to travel through time!

Follow in the footsteps of one of Ireland’s most iconic saints on the St Colmcille’s Donegal Audio Guide

St Colmcille, also known as St Columba, (the Latin form of his name), was born in Donegal in either 520 or 521 AD. Before his death in Iona on the 9th June 593, St Colmcille had become one of the most influential figures in Irish and British history. Colmcille is one of Ireland’s patron saints, a distinction he shares with Patrick and Brigid, and he is the patron saint of Derry. Colmcille is not only an important figure for Ireland, but as the founder of monasteries in Iona and Scotland, he was a key catalyst for the spread of Christianity in Northern Britain.

Though Derry, Iona, Durrow, Kells, and lots of other places all around Ireland and Scotland have associations with Colmcille, our audioguide is going to focus on his homeland – County Donegal – the place where he was born and raised. Join us on our St Colmcille’s Donegal Audio Guide as we take a journey to ancient monasteries, churches and holy wells at places like Gartan, Kilmacrennan and Dísert, we’ll set sail for Tory Island and tread the path of pilgrims at Glencolmcille.

Edercloon: Pathways Under the Peat

Hear of a remarkable archaeological discovery told by the experts who uncovered its story

Hear the story of a remarkable archaeological site that was discovered in a quiet lowland setting, near the border of Counties Leitrim and Roscommon in the mid-west of Ireland.

The remarkable series of ancient trackways at Edercloon was found during preparation works for the N4 Dromod-Roosky Bypass. This relatively short, 10km of dual carriageway runs through a landscape shaped by water. At its northern end are drumlins interspersed with small lakes, while its southern end skirts the margins of the boggy wetlands of the nearby River Shannon. Along this route, archaeologists from CRDS Ltd, on behalf of Leitrim County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland, excavated 14 sites dating from the Neolithic to the early modern period.

This Audiobook, produced on behalf of Transport Infrastructure Ireland, tells the story of the sites excavated in Edercloon and its neighbouring townland of Tomisky in County Longford. This is a tale of older routeways that ran through this landscape and of their discovery in 2006. It is a tale of construction, travel, rituals, craftsmanship and discovery but central to it all is the landscape that envelops it.

The level of preservation at wetland sites like Edercloon offers many opportunities that are lost on dryland sites, so this audiobook will introduce you to some of the experts whose meticulous work and insight, tells the story of Edercloon, the place, its environment and the people who passed through it long ago.
