Steven Van Zandt may be best known as the legendary founding guitarist from Bruce Springsteen’s E-Street band, or perhaps as Silvio Dante from The Sopranos. Now, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer "Little Stevie" is diving into the world of weed, with a focus on wellness.
As Van Zandt tells host Brit Smith, unlike other celebrities who have put their names on THC-focused cannabis lines, Little Stevie's new pre-rolled joints are heavy with CBD and easy on THC, designed to give the consumer a nice mellow body buzz. The bud itself is also being grown by one of the best in the business; Chemdog, one of the most iconic cannabis growers in modern U.S. history. “Little Steven’s Underground Apothecary” has launched exclusively at Canna Provisions recreational dispensaries in Lee and Holyoke, Massachusetts.
Audio in this episode includes music by Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band, and sound from HBO's The Sopranos.

Different Leaf: the Podcast - Reggae and Rockers with Niambe McIntosh & David Lopes
play

10/15/21 • 24 min

US cannabis culture has its roots deeply planted in reggae music. "Rockers" is the quintessential cult movie credited with introducing reggae music, Rastafarianism, and ganja to young American audiences in the 1970s. Before his death in 2015, the film's director Ted Bafaloukos penned an autobiography about his discovery of reggae in New York, and his experience shooting "Rockers" in Jamaica. In this episode, Brit talks to Gingko Press publisher David Lopes about the book "Rockers: The Making of Reggae's Most Iconic Film." Then, Brit talks to Niambe McIntosh, the youngest daughter of the late reggae legend Peter Tosh, founding member of The Wailers, to discuss the connection between the Rastafarian faith in Jamaica, weed, and reggae music.

Different Leaf: the Podcast - The Annaboto Part1; Growing Pot At Home With AI
play

06/17/22 • 39 min

Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing a huge role in the future of at-home cannabis growing systems, making it easier and more affordable for anyone to grow pot at home with ease. This episode, host Brit Smith and production manager Jen Hayes visit Boston-based company Boundless Robotics to meet the team behind the Annaboto; a new cannabis-growing robot that looks like a household lamp and uses AI to monitor every aspect of marijuana plant growth until it's time to harvest, and the winner of Boston University's 5th annual cannabis start-up competition.
Boundless Robotics CEO Carl Palme explains how the Annaboto was first developed, how the machines are made, and how the AI works to track and grow hydroponic cannabis with the help of an app on the user's phone. Then, Brit and Jen each take home an Annaboto machine to see what it's like to grow marijuana using artificial intelligence, and report back on the experience. Find out more at annaboto.com.

Different Leaf: the Podcast - How CBD Helps Athletes with Rachael Rapinoe
play

11/29/21 • 31 min

Growing up, athlete Rachael Rapinoe thrived off the "built-in rivalry" at home with her twin sister Megan. The Rapinoe twins played collegiate-level soccer for the Portland Pilots, where Rachael sustained a career-changing knee injury. After years of surgeries and overuse of prescription painkillers, Rachael learned just how many elite athletes were tapping into the vast health benefits of CBD, and she tried it for herself.
With a Master's degree in Health and Exercise Science behind her and the lived experience of how cannabinoids can help athletes like herself, Rachael co-founded Mendi, a sports-focused CBD brand whose mission is to "improve athletes lives using nature’s best recovery tools." Mendi offers CBD-infused gummies, capsules, tinctures, salves, and oils, all designed to help keep athletes like the Rapinoe twins at the top of their game. In this episode, Brit and Rachael discuss her experience with opioids and pot, how cannabinoids help athletes recover, whether weed should be considered a performance-enhancing drug, the current state of CBD, and THC rules in major sports, and more.

Different Leaf: the Podcast - A Fight For Fairness in Legal Weed with Caroline Pineau
play

01/21/22 • 26 min

Entrepreneurs face high hurdles before they can enter the legal cannabis industry. Especially in Massachusetts, where potential business owners have to get Host Community Agreements with their cities or towns, which include the controversial 'Community Impact Fee.' Lately, more and more company owners say their towns are charging small canna-businesses the maximum amount allowed by law, not because they are impacting the community, but simply because they can.
This episode, Brit talks to Caroline Pineau, owner of Stem adult-use cannabis dispensary. Caroline is the first cannabis business owner in the state to sue her host city over the legitimacy of the Community Impact Fee. Her lawsuit alleges that the City of Haverhill is requiring the maximum impact fee from her business without providing any itemized documentation of how it incurred the costs, or how those costs are reasonably related to the pot shop. It's considered a landmark case, which has the potential to change the way the entire cannabis industry operates in the state of Massachusetts.
