#165: How to Become Better at Focusing with Dr. Pedram Shojai
11/02/20 • 65 min
In our unpredictable and continually changing world, we are constantly in a state of figuring out how to create a happy life, which means tending to the needs of our health, career, family and friends, passions, and desires. Unfortunately, time never seems to be on our side, and, if anything, often it seems out of our control. But what if it wasn't? What if you had the ability to take control of how you trade your energy for time and knew how to increase your body's "energy budget" to live your fullest life?
On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Pedram Shojai, a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Master Herbalist, and Acupuncturist. He is the New York Times bestselling author of The Urban Monk, and The Art of Stopping Time, and the founder of whole.tv and Well.org. He is an acclaimed Qi Gong Master and Taoist Abbot with a practical approach to modern living, using Eastern thinking and practices to help himself and others overcome the Westernized challenges of everyday life and to wake up and live their lives fully. His latest book, Focus: Bringing Time, Energy, and Money into Flow, was just released and is about bringing your attention in line with your intention to get the life you want.
In this episode, Dhru and Pedram talk about how to find focus and make meaningful change to create the life we desire, how to balance doing versus being, and why saying “no” and setting boundaries is so important. They discuss what Pedram refers to as “life gardens” and the importance of how we tend to them. They also talk about how the pandemic has forced us, as a society to halt, and why this is such a crucial time to evaluate our lives and hit reset.
In this episode, we dive into:
-Pedram’s goal setting technique and why it’s so successful (11:46)
-How to make a life plan and stick to it (15:20)
-Common things that are pulling our attention away from being able to focus (17:58)
-How daily meditation can help with attention and focus (21:03)
-How Pedram maintains his focus throughout the day, and what he does when his attention gets off track (24:38)
-How modern technology is dividing us, and how we are letting the inputs of the world influence us (36:18)
-How Pedram became a monk and why he ended up leaving the monastery (37:24)
-Breaking expectations that others have of you and the importance of setting boundaries (54:59)

#164: Monsanto's World of Deception, Greed, and Glyphosate with Carey Gillam
Known as Monsanto's Roundup by consumers, and as glyphosate by scientists, the world's most popular weed killer is used everywhere from backyard gardens to golf courses to millions of acres of farmland. It's the pesticide on our dinner plates, a chemical so pervasive it’s in the air we breathe, our water, our soil, and even found increasingly in our own bodies. For decades it's been touted as safe enough to drink, but a growing body of evidence indicates just the opposite, with research tying the chemical to cancers and a host of other health threats.
On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Carey Gillam Carey, a veteran investigative journalist and author of Whitewash- The Story of a Weed Killer, Cancer and the Corruption of Science. Gillam works now as Research Director for the non-profit US Right to Know and as a columnist for The Guardian. Her second book will be out in early 2021.
In this episode, Dhru and Carey talk about the health hazards of glyphosate, one of the most widely used herbicides, which is most commonly found in the weedkiller Roundup. They discuss Monsanto’s efforts to promote increased uses of glyphosate, and how Monsanto (now Bayer) is facing thousands of lawsuits from customers who now have cancer. They also talk about how most of us are probably consuming several different pesticides in our daily meals, and what we can do to avoid them.
In this episode, we dive into:
-Rachel Carson’s warning about the unrestricted use of pesticides (2:42)
-How Carey Gillam started reporting on Monsanto and glyphosate (7:01)
-Monsanto’s argument for why the world needs GMO foods and Roundup Ready crops (11:59)
-The first concerns over the use of glyphosate-based herbicides (15:19)
-How Carey became a target of the industry and how Monsanto tried to silence her (17:18)
-The deception behind Monsanto and the safety of glyphosate (19:41)
-How the public and lawmakers were fooled to believe that glyphosate is safe (23:02)
-Lawsuits against Monsanto (30:07)
-Why we need to pay attention to what’s happening in our food system and the importance of getting corporate wealth out of Washington (39:59)
-The truth about the chemicals in our food and what you can do about it (48:21)
-Pesticides in drinking water and rainfall (1:00:38)
-Carey’s upcoming book, The Monsanto Papers (1:05:02)

#166: Are Root Canals Dangerous? with Dr. Rouzita Rashtian, DDS
Root canals have become ubiquitous—almost 60 million are performed each year in the United States. “You need a root canal‟ is now almost as common as hearing “you need a filling.” It is the only treatment protocol available to retain a tooth that is diseased. Yet, just how safe are root canals? And, what is the science behind there being a non-toxic alternative to tooth extractions?
On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Rouzita Rashtian, a biological dentist and surgeon. After having earned her undergraduate degree at University of California Los Angeles with high honors in Neuroscience, Dr. Rouzita Rashtian went on to attend the University of Southern California where she completed her degree in doctor of dental surgery.
Dr. Rashtian believes that every individual deserves the highest quality in dental care. She practices utilizing modern health as a platform in helping patients understand the relationship between their mouth and overall health, in her Los Angeles dental office. Her focus is on holistic and biological dentistry; the philosophy recognizing the teeth and associated structures as part of the whole body. Because of this important relationship, she offers a plethora of healthy treatment options, stressing the use of non-toxic materials focusing on the impact that toxins and hidden bacteria can have on cumulative health. She uses minimally invasive techniques to preserve healthy tooth structure and incorporates laser technology and ozone therapy. She holds a SMART certification license through the prestigious International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. She is also a member of the Holistic Dental Association and the International Association of Mercury-safe Dentists and Biomimetic Dentistry.
In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Rashtian dive deep into the topic of root canals. They discuss what a root canal treatment involves, why you might end up needing one, and alternative treatment options. Dr. Rashtian also shares a few case studies from her practice where a root canal was the underlying cause of a patient’s health issue.
In this episode, we dive into:
-What is biological dentistry (6:16)
-What is a root canal (12:39)
-The four factors to avoid a root canal (18:20)
