Episode 111: Trials, Tribulations and Blackmail
Decades From Home - A Podcast About Germany
01/28/23 • 57 min
Nic is worried that the producer is trying to blackmail him, although Dili seems less than supportive of his current predicament. We discuss problem neighbours, if it’s better to live next door to family or have them as far aways as possible, and whether independence is both a blessing and a curse. Also, Dili challenges Nic to watch an awarding winning German TV show that seemingly revolves around an incestious relationship.
We look at how moving to Germany presents some unique challenges to new arrivals, chief among them being making friends, but also how migrant success can give a person a deep sense of pride. We also take some time to look at how children can change perspectives, hunting for Kindergartens, and different cultural approaches to raising kids.
The resignation of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern leads to a discussion on how women in public life are treated in Germany, shock at how patriarchal Germany can be, and the sometimes worryingly rigid ideas about gender roles.

Episode 118: Tales of the Hauptstadt
Decades From Home - A Podcast About Germany
03/18/23 • 59 min
Sadly Dili was out this week, but luckily for us freelance writer & journalist Aaron Gasch Burnett was able to step into the breach. Some listeners may know Aaron from his work on the Germany in Focus podcast, as well as a variety of articles for many other publications.
We kick off proceedings in typical German fashion with a test on Aarons credentials, and by credentials we mean opinions on German politeness, maple syrup, and of course cakes. Aaron discusses his experience of hosting the I am Germany Twitter account (@Germany_iam), his German grandparents, and even schools Nic on Canadian rodeo.
With attention on potential changes to citizenship rules in Germany, Aaron shares his thoughts on the likelihood of a new law coming into effect, how things might actually change for those hoping to gain dual citizenship, and potential stumbling blocks along the way. We finish this week on the rivalry between Bavaria and Berlin, and why Berlin is one of the best places to live in Germany.

Episode 103: Thingamajig & Dingsbums
Decades From Home - A Podcast About Germany
12/03/22 • 60 min
December is upon us, and with the arrival of Advent we discuss wooden Advent calendars, homemade calendars, and why giving chocolate to children at eight in the morning seems a terrible idea. We also chat German football terminology, direct translations, and our most used German words and phrases.
After an email from a listener sparks a discussion on language learning, we compare notes on how we maintain our German, and offer some tips on some of the small things we do to keep improving. The recent announcement of proposed changes to citizenship in Germany leads us to talk about our own experiences of gaining citizenship, the pitfalls, and why taking a different passport isn’t simply a matter of paperwork.
We finish on a study from the Kraftfahrtbundesamtes (Federal Motor Transport Authority) which has found that more traffic offenses are caused by men than women in Germany.

German citizenship faster? Sounds like a good idea, but guess who’s against it?

Episode 109: Trouble With A Capital Tea
Decades From Home - A Podcast About Germany
01/14/23 • 55 min
A listener’s email gives us a chance to celebrate Dili’s new microphone, although we might forgo the traditional celebratory cup of tea given Germany’s track record for making a decent brew. Why is tea so maligned here, and might it have to do with some good old British Schadenfreude?
It’s the second week of January, and with most people head back at work, we take a look at the world of German politics as planning for 2023 begins. We discuss the various fault lines within the Ampelkoalition, and what we can expect from our politicians over the coming year.
Sticking with politics, we look at the verbal mudslinging between Bavaria and Berlin as two prominent politicians highlight the regional differences that can be found in a country of 16 very different states. Finally, Dili has some questions about the Royal revelations coming out of the UK, and what they mean for the future of the monarchy.

Episode 133: Nice Ice Device
Decades From Home - A Podcast About Germany
07/01/23 • 64 min
On the show this week:
Living in Germany presents unique challenges, not all them are entirely predictable, such as fighting an 8 year old for a seat on the train. Dili may not have known she was about to throwdown with a small child, but she’s never been one to shrink from a confrontation. We discuss confronting unruly kids, another Bavarian Volksfest, and an invasion of hornets.
With Germany still suffering from a heatwave, we look at government advice for keeping cool, and why putting your pants in the freezer is an alternative to air conditioning. We also turn our attention to the recent electoral success of the AfD in Thuringia, and the ramifications of the first district administrator from the far right party.
We finish on a happier note as Nic attempts to educate Dili on the wonders of football in the run up to EURO 2024, starting with choosing a name for the tournament’s new mascot.

Episode 116: Wolf Watch
Decades From Home - A Podcast About Germany
03/04/23 • 56 min
It’s been three weeks since producer Simon went on holiday and Dili & Nic are really missing him; Dili misses his stern eyebrows, while Nic misses his editing skills. In order to cheer themselves up, your hosts discuss which superpowers would be most useful for living in Germany, and why might the desire to be invisible be a sad indictment on how women are treated here.
With the closing of a 130 year old mineral water company in Baden-Württemberg, we take a look at the German love of bottled water. Is tap water so terrible, and where do Germans store all their crates of water they seem to buy in ever increasing quantities? Dili also shares her favourite part of drinking fizzy water: the gas!
We discuss the Meldestelle Antifeminismus, or Anti-Feminism Reporting Office, which has been operating a portal to document anti-feminist incidents across Germany. We talk about whether such a platform is useful, and if its critics have a point. We finish with a Grimm’s Fairy Tale come to life after a cyclist comes face to face with the big bad wolf.

Episode 175: The Muscled Messiah
Decades From Home - A Podcast About Germany
04/20/24 • 46 min
In the latest installment, co-host Nic bravely airs his grievances against asparagus and men in shorts, inadvertently sparking a feud with Producer Simon, a proud member of the shorts-wearing community. Amidst the playful banter, Dili gracefully steers the episode back on track by sharing heartwarming listener feedback, prompting reflections on past experiences in Germany. From reminiscing about our initial days in a new country to dissecting the unwritten rules of German household footwear, the trio offers possible advice to their past selves.
As the episode unfolds, the podcast takes a humorous turn with a discussion on the unexpected TikTok debut of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, adding a contemporary twist to the show's signature mix of personal anecdotes and cultural insights. Tune in to the latest episode for a dose of laughter, camaraderie, and a dash of unexpected news from the world of German politics.

Episode 106: Spezi Socks
Decades From Home - A Podcast About Germany
12/24/22 • 53 min
It’s only bloody Christmas! We bring you a bumper festive episode, as we discuss secret recipes, fun socks, and the art of decorating a Christmas tree. Dili shares her Christmas plans, and her opinions on Peppa Pig toys, while Nic recaps the end of his Deutscher Bier Pokal competition.
Since both Dili and Nic live in states that have ended mask requirement on public transport, it gives us a chance to discuss these changes, and the sudden, and not disconnected arrival of an unprecedented wave of flu, cold and general sickness in Bavaria. Is freedom really coughing in someone’s face on the Ubahn?
Since it’s the season of gift giving, we share our thought on present buying, whether expensive gifts are really better, and what gift giving says about a person. We finish with chat about Nic’s first Christmas in Germany.

Episode 119: Kumquat Quatsch
Decades From Home - A Podcast About Germany
03/25/23 • 54 min
After a week off with Corona, Dili is back in the co-host hot seat, and comes equipped with questions about Nic’s adventures on St Patrick’s Day. We discuss how to survive an all day drinking session, changing trains with a hangover, and the secret power of cheese and ham croissants.
We tackle the thorny issue of Wahlrechtsreform after the German government voted to change the current election system, and reduce an overly bloated Bundestag. How will these new plans change the next election, and why might the opposition to reform create some strange political alliances?
Finally, the announcement that one of Germany’s largest department store groups, Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof, is planning to close 50 of its 129 stores across the country leads us to a discussion about the changing face of German city centres, and how empty shop spaces might be used for something more innovative.

Decades from Home has become part of my weekly ritual - I frequently listen as I cook at home in the kitchen. Otherwise a welcome accompaniment on my commute.
