Professor Harvey discusses the relationship between the mode of production of capital and the context of its social formation. In the previous episode, Harvey shared his analysis of the capitalist mode of production from the standpoint of the emancipated laborer. Now, he further explains the mode of production, which is what Marx calls the inner structure of capitalist society. Curiously, Marx rarely uses the term capitalism, but he does talk about capital as a mode of production. And he also talks about the social formation, which is the contextual conditions within which a mode of production operates. The analogy Professor Harvey uses here is that a mode of production is like the engine of capitalism, and it is the driving engine of the mode of production, which Marx is primarily concerned to analyze and understand. But Marx also recognizes the significance of the social formation, especially in terms of both the environmental conditions, and also the social and cultural history. Therefore, we need to have a clear analysis of the relationship between the social formation and the mode of production.

In this analysis of the capitalist totality, Professor Harvey provides a critical examination of the exploitative nature of capitalism from the perspective of the emancipated worker. The capitalist totality refers to the all-encompassing system of capitalism, which affects every aspect of modern society, including the economy, politics, culture, and even our personal lives.
Using his recent book as a foundation, Professor Harvey exposes the deep-rooted inequalities and injustices that exist in the capitalist system. He highlights how workers are oppressed by capitalists who constantly seek to extract the maximum amount of labor from them while paying them as little as possible. Furthermore, he argues that this oppression stems from the inherent contradictions within capitalism, which prioritize profit over the well-being of workers.
Throughout his analysis, Professor Harvey emphasizes the agency of workers in challenging and changing the conditions that oppress them. By acknowledging the oppressive nature of capitalism and the agency of workers to resist and transform it, he offers a critical perspective on the current state of the world and a path towards a more just and equitable future.

Professor Harvey discusses the persecution of the scholar Owen Lattimore at the hands of Joseph McCarthy. Owen Lattimore was editor of Pacific Affairs, a journal published by the Institute of Pacific Relations. Lattimore taught at John’s Hopkins University from 1938 to 1963 and then from 1963 to 1970, he was the first Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Leeds in England. Professor Harvey had the opportunity to visit Lattimore in London.
While doing ethnographic research in Afghanistan in 1950, Lattimore was met by the US consular official who said, you'd better rush back to the United States because Senator McCarthy has fingered you as one of "the top Russian espionage agent in the United States." He was called up in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee and subjected to years of interrogation based on false charges. The Senate Internal Security Subcommittee (the Senate version of HUAC), headed by Pat McCarran, came to the absurd conclusion that China was “lost” not because of Mao or because of the Chinese masses, but China was “lost” because of a small group of academics and intellectuals and State Department officials.
Lattimore was red-baited and persecuted for many years. It is important to understand this history, because what we are seeing right now is a return to that paranoid style of American politics.
