Today is a discussion with a friend and colleague in the space of child sexual abuse online where we once again take a look at the approaches used in the removal of this kind of material to protect children online.

The discussion take us on a broad approach to the reporting of, classifications of child sexual abuse, or exploitation, platform violations, adult sexual material, nudes, cartoon versions and the who, what and how of the way in which social media and other websites are removing these images, videos and other types of material.

Andy is great at explaining what parents and professionals working with children can keep their eyes and ears open to, having worked in/for social media companies in the past and has over 20 years of law enforcement experience in this domain.

We discuss 'that question' relating to banning, removing, delaying and more and have a long conversation bout the actual pragmatics about why we think this is wont work on a global level given that this is where the internet is. We consider the approaches of many of the internet safety spaces and what is being said in the realms of trust and safety and what the risks and dangers really are.

No spoilers but please do listen to this section if you have been led to believe that a ban or delay is the solution to a problem that is much more complicated than a simple 'don't' approach. Why parents are not aware of the technical issue at a tech, industry and government level.

We do talk about the great work that social media channels are taking to address some of the issues that are being discussed in todays session, and we put out a plea to the whole of the industries and techn companies to come together in a way that allows us to address the societal issues.

We (and I most certainly say wholeheartedly) duly request that we put the children and vulnerable in the centre of our conversations with the interest of the children and vulnerable as the main focus of the conversation.

For me the last 10-15 mins of this conversation are perhaps the most important in the whole sector of keeping children and vulnerable people safe online.

This episode was absolutely awesome and one I have been waiting to do for some time. The reason being as a gamer this platform takes gaming to the next level and has been my favourite thing to happen (so far) in gaming tech, this passion is also shared by James and Nathan from Chaos Theory VR Arcade (I had to edit this part in the recording as I kept saying therapy not theory- guess theres a clue about what we talk about!)

James and Nathan are those kind of people that are uber cool dudes and this tech has brought together a partnership which they are hoping to bring to the masses. Because its incredibly fun, immersive and really does allow even the most basic of players to have a go. You really should have a go as soon as possible!

We talk the games, the tech, the advances and the fun. This is such a fab conversation so dive in and have a listen- it wont be long before you'll be putting on a headset and joining me in the podcast environment in VR... I can feel it!

You can find James and Nathan at their new shiny website: https://www.chaostheoryvr.com

and on Instagram at : chaostheoryvrarcade

For now, enjoy the last of season 2 whilst I get my head back into my PhD and take a small break before starting season 3 with two amazing episodes.

Cyber Synapse Podcast - Digital Deciders.. is it Authoritarian- What about Culture?
play

05/09/19 • 53 min

This weeks episode features Tassos, a friend and colleague of Justin Sherman whose episode aired a few weeks ago. However this episode has a counter position on the Digital Authoritarian position and takes into account culture, parenting styles and is much more food for thought. Tassos takes us through Arab Spring and why certain countries operate in the manner that they do and why we can look at the same issue in more than one way. We look at History, Culture, and what is a free internet? How does Article 13 come into play also in accordance with free speech, copyright and intellectual property? Here is a link to the article that Tassos and I discuss and use as a basis for this chat.https://www.tripwire.com/state-of-security/security-awareness/digital-deciders-future-of-internet/

This episode I'm joined by Dr Rachel Kowert and this is the last of the trio of gaming related specials. Fear not though as this conversation is a super duper chat about Rachels book which is an easy to read guide with evidence based facts delivered in an easy to read format, taking away the academic 'wordery' that can so often discourage parents from reading large 'clunky' books. Rachel writes a compact book which can be read in one sitting, which is kind of how we like books to be that are aimed at Parents who rarely have time for a hot coffee! We talk 'shop', addiction, violence, unintended learning, misogyny, gaming communities, friendships, communication, male to female ratios, vision, flow, loneliness and discuss new areas of research that need investigating. This was another awesome guest and one I would love to have back as we navigate further research and findings around digital media and parenting. Let me know your thoughts on the last few episodes and content and lets see what else there is missing from your knowledge banks. As always thanks for being a listener and supporting the podcast, please do share this with anyone you think might need to hear about these issues. please take 30 seconds to rate the podcast too to help people discover it. Take care and catch you soon! Rachel’s book is: A parents guide to video games, The essential guide to understanding how video games impact your child's physical, social, and psychological well-being

This extra and special episode comes to you courtesy of the book edited by Dr Anthony Bean, which is called The Psychology of Zelda, Linking our world to the legend of Zelda series. We talk about the books chapters written by some fantastic contributors and bringing topics such as existentialism, projection, grief, feminism and more! This book is now my top ranking therapeutic book based on the contents and one that is essential reading for players of this game (past or present) and for parents and professionals. It really is a delightful read and one I hankered down on upon its arrival, which I have been eagerly anticipating since Tony and I spoke last episode. Tony has some great reflections on the book contents and this is one episode that sits snuggly between two gaming specials bringing you the second of a trio of #gamingforgood and not as 'bad' as is often made out by the media skew...listen in to find out. As always thanks for your support in the podcast downloads and shares that take place. Thank you to those people who feedback and let me know what they like and are enjoying. Please do continue to let me know and support the podcast as this really does hack into my writing time and I am doing my best to bring you as many episodes as I can, as quickly as I can. This is a special trio based on some recent feedback at a conference asking about this topic; and my passion to emphasise the huge amount of research and knowledge in this area that highlights the real benefits of games. (adults and child alike) Enjoy!
