S2 Ep38: Voluntourism and No White Saviors
How many travelers do you see posting “poverty porn” to their social accounts, and, is this okay? Erin chats with Wendy and Olivia from @NoWhiteSaviors about voluntourism, the white savior complex, and how white travelers, celebrities, and influencers can do better when traveling in Africa.
The tagline of the @NoWhiteSaviors Instagram account reads, “We never said no to white people. We just know you shouldn’t be the hero of the story. If you’re not uncomfortable, you’re not listening.” In today's episode it is time to listen, so that as travelers and humanitarians, we can do better.
No White Saviors is an advocacy campaign led by a majority female, majority African team of professionals based in Kampala, Uganda. Their collective experience in the development and aid sectors have led them towards a deep commitment to seeing things move towards a more equitable, anti-racist direction.
Guest: Olivia and Wendy of No White Saviors, the umbrella advocacy campaign giving birth to Kusimama Africa, the hands-on work in Uganda.

S2 Ep40: Should We Feel #FLYSHAME?
Did you know that in Sweden, flying is NOT something to be proud of? The notion that you should feel guilty every time you board a plane is a feeling plaguing Scandinavia.
In this first part of our two part sustainable travel series, we're joined by Evelina Utterdahl, an environmentalist, climate activist, and sustainable traveler who publically pledged to stop flying entirely. We discuss what impact flying has on the environment and how we can reduce this impact. We also explore the nuance of #FlyShame: the privilege and accessibility that's needed to give up flying altogether.
Guest: Evelina Utterdahl
