The decisions we make as travelers impact more than just us. Our travels impact the communities we visit, in different ways, from economic, to even political. And nowadays, health is a major factor, too.
Erin is joined by JoAnna Haugen, a solutions-oriented writer, editor, and public speaker who works at the intersection of sustainable travel, environmental conservation, and community-based advocacy efforts. We discuss what it means to de-center ourselves as travelers, the role of the travel industry in doing so, consequences of a traveler-focused mindset and how to get the "casual traveler" to care about responsible travel.

Wheelchair users around the globe are having some of the worst travel experiences imaginable, because aircrafts do not allow wheelchairs to roll right on. Most mobility devices have to be stowed in the cargo hold along with luggage.
But mobility devices aren’t just luggage. This system is resulting in thousands of dollars worth of damage to wheelchairs, and scary, uncomfortable experiences for travelers with disabilities.
We talk to Maayan Ziv and Chris Wood to unpack why inclusive air travel is lagging, how accessible air travel in a human right, and what legislation and changes are needed to make it possible for wheelchairs to roll right on.

Thinking back to the flights you've taken in the last few years, how many times have you noticed a woman-identifying pilot boarding the plane, or making those in-flight announcements?
According to 2020 data from the FAA's Aeronautical Center, about 7% of commercial airline pilots that year were women, and it’s been reported that less than 1% of pilots in the US are Black women.
Joi Schweitzer is part of that 1% and she joins the podcast to unpack the ins and outs of what it takes to become a pilot as a black woman and the state of represention in the skys. She also shares where her love of flying came from and what's ahead for the next generate of pilots.
PLUS, Erin and Kattie discuss the latest news about Air 4 All's wheelchair accessible airplane seats being developed in partnership with Delta.
Guest: Joi Schweitzer is a commercial airline pilot who got her start in the industry working as a flight attendant. She is also an athlete, and known for her appearance on the reality TV show, The Mole.

Museums are important spaces where the stories of people, culture, history, and our planet, are both preserved and shared. When you’re traveling, they can give you important context about the region you're visiting.
We’re digging into museums with María Elena Ortiz, Curator at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. We chat about the history of museums, and we unpack the colonial undertones that they sometimes have. And of course, we’ll talk about the role of museums in tourism.

S4 Ep72: Is Conservation Tourism Responsible?

There are just two northern white rhinos left in the world. Staggering rates of illegal hunting for its horn have led to its (almost certain) extinction in the wild.
The rise of conservation tourism, or, safaris, is one way that tourists can support species that are going extinct. But how effective is conservation tourism?
James Mwenda joins the podcast to tell us about conservation and our role as tourists in protecting endangered species and our planet. James was a caretaker for the last northern white rhinos at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, and now he has started his own expedition company, Jemu Expeditions, to show travellers to Kenya what he loves most about his country.

A Quick Update!

Curious Tourism: Responsible Travel Podcast

play

03/29/20 • 2 min

We wanted to quickly check in with you and let you know how things are going during these wild times - what's happening with production, and what you can expect in the future.
We'll give you a mental picture though of our current states in the meantime:
Erin has been binge watching Trailer Park Boys and going up and down her staircase every day for "excercise". She's been snuggling her cats 24/7 and is now realizing the value of animal therapy. She's wondering if now's the right time to adopt another cat?
Kattie has been googling "top sweatpants", anticipating her next meal and still making podcasts, but from home. She hasn't been able to bring herself to do any excersise despite the encouragement all over social media and the flexible schedule, so please reach out to her to make sure she hasn't officially become a couch.

REPOST: Travel Through The Lens of a Black, Trans Woman

Curious Tourism: Responsible Travel Podcast

play

06/09/20 • 41 min

Instead of releasing a new episode, we’re dedicating this week to revisiting episodes that are essential listening, especially right now. Each of these episodes centres the voice of a Black creator, or traveler, or activist.
According to a US transgender survey from 2015, nearly half of those who flew in 2014 experienced problems relating to being transgender. In this episode, Erin is joined by the amazing Peppermint, a trans black woman to discuss further (you might also recognize her as the runner up from season 9 of RuPauls Drag Race!).
Peppermint, who joined us remotely from a cab in New York, talks about her experiences traveling and touring from a “identity-first” framework, and to share with us the challenges she faces. From airport security around the world, to passing privilege and pretty privilege, Peppermint breaks down how her identity as not only a trans women, but also a black women, effects her experience of travel through a world that is still very gendered.

S2 Ep36: Travel "Back in the Day" and Exploring Soviet Russia

Curious Tourism: Responsible Travel Podcast

play

01/08/20 • 48 min

The way that we travel is constantly changing.
Just 20 years ago, for example, travelers didn't have Google Maps to guide them, or social media to keep them connected to family and friends at home.
Join Erin as she chats with a fellow solo woman traveler, Valika Kunkel. Valika tells the story of how she boarded her first transatlantic flight in the early 60s at age 13 - completely alone. She shares her experiences from traveling by car through Soviet Russia to connecting with other travelers on trains, without the help of social media!
