200. Why We Stopped Fostering
Crystal Paine Show
02/28/23 • 28 min
In this week’s episode of The Crystal Paine Show, Jesse and I share why we made the decision recently to close our home (at least for the next year or two) to fostering. It was a really difficult decision to make — and it wasn’t the decision we were expecting to make right now. But we spent a lot of time praying and had a lot of conversations and are grateful for the clear direction God gave us and the peace we have.
While the need for foster families is so great right now, we also know that loving and caring for our six children is our highest priority — despite our heart to make a difference in the lives of children in foster care. The beautiful thing we’ve learned the past few years is that there are many ways to make a difference without actively fostering.
In this episode we talk about decision-making, prioritizing, and why there are seasons for saying yes and seasons for saying no and both can be a good thing. This process of making this decision is part of what I talk about in my new book, The Time-Saving Mom: How to Juggle a Lot, Enjoy Your Life, and Accomplish What Matters Most and I close out the podcast reading a section from it.
In This Episode
[00:36] – We are sharing about a difficult decision we made recently.
[02:23] – But first, what has been saving my life lately?
[07:57] – The story behind our decision.
[10:32] – Two of our daughters will soon be graduating.
[11:50] – Our three little ones need a lot right now.
[14:45] – Our family is currently not equipped to meet DCS’s needs of us taking in teens or large sibling groups.
[17:25] – We talk about celebrating someone’s yes and someone’s no.
[20:53] – I segue into my new book.
[21:51] – I read a section from the introduction from my book.

256. Micah's Unexpected Hospital Stay
Crystal Paine Show
04/16/24 • 35 min
This episode is a reminder to trust your God-given intuition. If you feel something is wrong or off, get it checked out.
In this podcast, we share the story of Micah getting really sick recently and how it ended up landing him in the hospital. We got so many questions from you all about his illness and how we knew when it was time to take him to the hospital/what we experienced, that I thought recording a podcast episode sharing in-depth might be helpful.
We're so grateful that Micah is doing better now and fully back to his sweet, busy, silly self! We missed all his smiles and laughter and singing while he was sick!
In this episode, we also give an update on what we're reading, share a reader's response to last week's episode, and we have a fun and friendly "argument" over audiobooks.
In This Episode
[0:35] - This week, we're sharing about Micah's recent sickness and hospital stay.
[1:27] - Jesse is still reading Three Felonies A Day by Harvey Silvergate and Alan M. Dershowitz because it’s a dense read.
[2:01] - I've been reading I Want God by Lisa Whittle.
[4:10] - I share a message from a listener about commentary in last episode about Farmer Boy.
[6:07] - Jesse and I have a friendly discussion about whether audiobooks count as "reading" and he shares about the John Grisham audiobooks he's listened to recently, including Jake Brigance trilogy.
[8:45] - I had a very full weekend planned, including my last girls-only youth group camp and attending my friend's wedding, but that all changed when Micah got sick.
[12:04] - We knew we needed to do something and ended up calling and asking about getting Zofran.
[14:01] - Micah's symptoms persisted, prompting a pediatrician visit.
[18:39] - We ended up in the ER and it took many attempts plus two rounds of sedatives to finally get the IV in.
[24:31] - After hours of IV fluids in the ER, they ended up deciding to admit Micah as his labs didn't look good.
[29:23] - I touch upon some of the lessons that were learned from this experience.

263. Our Goals for a Slowed Down Summer
Crystal Paine Show
06/07/24 • 27 min
This week, join us as we share our goals for this summer! You might recall from our recent episodes our theme for the summer is a Slowed Down Summer.
Today, we're talking more about what we plan for that to look like and the specific goals I set for the summer to help me live out that theme. Some of these goals might seem -- at first -- a bit contradictory to the idea of slowing down, but I share more in this episode how these will help me walk out my hope for slowing down this summer.
I set a running goal -- which is something that is so cathartic to me! And a reading goal, which is also something that helps me to slow down. In this episode, I share about how I'm incorporating more reading into my day. I also set a reading goal for two chapter books I want to finish with the younger kids + some preschool I want to finish with them over the summer.
Finally, we are hoping to plan in lots of dates as a couple and dates with the older kids. I set specific numbers to shoot for, but it's mostly just able intentionally prioritizing time to be together and have fun together.
What are your goals and hopes for this summer? I'd love to hear!
In This Episode
[0:35] - Our goals for a slowed-down summer!
[1:42] - A little update on savoring vs. surviving graduation week.
[7:45] - I recently finished reading Win at Work and Succeed at Life, which challenged me to rethink overworking and balance business with personal priorities.
[10:31] - My summer goals focus on working less and slowing down, with specific objectives to achieve this.
[11:11] - Goal #1: Run 100 miles and why it doesn't contradict slowing down.
[14:33] - Goal #2: finish 50 books!
[18:30] - Goal #3: finish reading Farmer Boy and Little House on the Prairie with the younger kids.
[19:44] - Goal #4: finish reading the Biggest Story Bible with the younger kids and Goal #5: go on eight dates with her older kids.

54. Jesse Answers Your Burning Questions
Crystal Paine Show
10/08/19 • 35 min
In 2014, Jesse closed down his law practice, we moved from Kansas to Tennessee, and he came home full-time.
That was over 5 years ago and it’s taken us a few years to find our rhythm. We’ve both learned and grown a lot in these last five years. It hasn’t been easy. He struggled through a period of depression. I struggled to figure out what it looked like to love him well through that.
But in the last two years, I’ve seen Jesse truly come alive, embrace who God has made him to be, and pour himself into the people and opportunities right in front of him. It has been beautiful and heartwarming to have a front row seat on his journey!
So many people have asked questions over the past five years like, “Is Jesse still an attorney? Why did he leave his law practice? What is his role in your business? What does his day-to-day look like?”
I think the fact that he would choose to come home full-time after getting his law degree and being licensed as an attorney really fascinated people... or makes people shake their heads in confusion.
Today, on the podcast, I ask him these burning questions you all have asked and he gets really honest about his journey and where he is now.
If you’re struggling with major life changes, want to find your worth outside of your work, or are just curious about some of the behind-the-scenes of our lives, I think this episode will encourage you.
Thank you, Jesse, for your willingness to be so open and vulnerable. I love you and love this crazy and adventurous and wild ride of life we’re on together!
In This Episode:
[00:25] Welcome back! We're turning the tables a little today and I'm interviewing Jesse!
[01:38] What’s saving our lives: Nalgene bottles and seeing our baby on an ultrasound!
[06:44] I haven't gotten in much reading recently, but every day I take time to read The Daily Light.
[09:01] Jesse shares a brief recap of his story post-law school and starting his own law firm.
[13:45] Why did Jesse decide to close down the law firm?
[19:04] How Jesse struggled to recognize his gifts and battled depression in those early months.
[23:07] What does Jesse’s life look like now?
[29:10] We talk about Jesse's involvement in church, our home, and our business.
[31:16] I close out the show by sharing why I am so grateful that Jesse is home and how his willingness to take a risk has benefited our family in such profound ways.

You may recall from a couple of episodes ago our conversation in which we shared our thoughts on the Shiny Happy People docu-series. Jesse shares how even though he wasn’t directly in the IBLP/ATI program, his church was heavily influenced by it, so listen in as Jesse shares details of his own experience.
He shares what ideals his church had and when he started to question those ideals and move away from legalism. We are so grateful for the lessons that we have learned and how we went into marriage on the same page, and we hope that you get a lot out of Jesse’s words in this episode!

If I could go back, I would work less and chase numbers and business growth a whole lot less, I'd be more present and take time to really notice and celebrate the small things, I'd stop trying to fix my kids and just walk with them, and I'd worry a lot less about what other people think.

[25:03] - I wish that I would have cared less about what others thought.

[31:25] - There is always still time for redemption.
