Crime and Roses - Ep. 163: True Crime: The Murder of Mary Ellen Deener
play

02/24/22 • 48 min

It’s Black History Month, and we are focusing on stories from the Black community.

Last week we saw Clayton give a ... strange response to Teddi saying she was a virgin. That led us into a conversation about what a virgin “looks like.” We also discuss the sexualization of black girls.

This week Danielle gives us more information about the over-sexualization of black girls in this country, with information from a recent study.

She also tells us about the murder of Mary Ellen Deener. Her killer was caught the very next day, only to be released from prison to go Christmas shopping in 1973, to never return.

Lester Eubanks, who now is in his mid-70s, was described as a 5-foot-11-inch male with black hair and brown eyes. At the time of his disappearance, he weighed approximately 175 pounds. Other unique physical characteristics include a mole under his left eye.

Anyone who has information on Eubanks is asked to call the U.S. Marshals Service tip line at 866-4-WANTED.

CONTENT WARNING: Child murder and child sexual assault. (Story Starts at: 3:43).

We were given exclusive early access to the new season of Forensic Files II, Season 3, on HLN. Forensic Files II is a revival continuation of the long-running American documentary true-crime series Forensic Files. Join us as we live-tweet during the premiere using hashtag #ForensicFilesII. All New Episodes Of Forensic Files II Start Sunday, February 27 at 10 pm ET. Only on HLN.

Crime and Roses - Ep. 159: The Murders of Harry and Harriette Moore
play

02/10/22 • 49 min

It’s Black History Month, and we are focusing on stories from the Black community.

Last week the show took us to a place they called an “international” destination, but it turned out to be Houston, Texas. In the case Megan tells today, one of the victims was born in Houston, Florida.

Megan tells the story of husband and wife Harry and Harriette Moore, who were the first couple to be killed in the Civil Rights Movement. Harry was the first NAACP official to be killed in the movement. The Moore’s murder was also very closely tied to the story of the Groveland Four, documented in the “Devil in the Grove” by Gilbert King.

CONTENT WARNING: race motivated murder, brief mention of sexual assault, brief mention of suicide. (Story Starts at: 6:33).

We made it y'all! We finished season 26 of The Bachelor. Thank you for sticking with us. On the finale and After the Final Rose (ATFR) we saw the conclusion of the segment that has been teased all season long when we saw Clayon tell Gabby and Rachel that he was in love and was intimate with both of them. In addition, we see Clayton basically living a double life, telling Gabby and Rachel he was in love with them and telling Susie he loved her the most.

This week Danielle tells you of a traditional love triangle, with a twist. Jennifer Ji came to live the American Dream, with her rich and successful boyfriend. The only problem was, her boyfriend also had a wife and kids in the next town over. Every second of this high-profile case was covered by the media in the US and China. The entire story ends in a way that no one could see coming.

Crime and Roses - Ep. 178 True Crime: The Murder of Alan Berg
play

05/12/22 • 38 min

We are still on a break from the Bachelor, but connecting our stories to the franchise. Stagecoach 2022 was held at the end of April, it’s a country music festival that Bachelor Nation always seems to flock to. This year, Blake Hortsmann (aka Balaockaye), performed as a DJ, and the crowd seemed to love it. Blake and Stagecoach also had a whole storyline on Bachelor In Paradise Season 6. This week’s story is for Blake, who calls Denver, Colorado home with a dope roommate Elyse!

This week, Megan tells the story of the murder of Alan Berg. Alan was an outspoken Jewish talk radio host, whose show on KOA AM 850 in Denver could be heard in over 30 states. Sources say that Alan had an abrasive on-air personality, and was always ready to call out anti-Semitism and other forms of racism. Unfortunately, this made him a target of a white supremacist group, the Order.

Danielle is not feeling great this week, and when she fell asleep, she woke up to straight violence on the beach.

This week is so chaotic, all the couples that you thought were strong are decidedly NOT strong. Mari wants to be able to go on dates with other people, which Kenny doesn’t really like, but then seems to hit it off with Demi. Chris Conran and Chasen enter, they have a double date card and they take Jessenia and Deandra. Grocery Store Joe and Serena P have a one-on-one date. Demi gave Kenny a cake for his birthday, Mari is not a fan of this and throws the cake in the fire, which very much upsets Riley, because he just wanted to eat the cake, damn. Aaron and Tammy are not doing well either, especially not after she chooses Thomas over Aaron. Karl gives Deandra a bracelet so Chasen has to one-up him and give her a necklace, which leads to a confrontation. Tre self-eliminates, then Tahzjuan self-eliminates. And then Becca Kufrin walks in. Noah and Abigail may be just friends? Someone, who may also be known as Tia Booth, comes in and she takes Kenny on a date which neither Mari nor Demi appreciate. And finally, Kendall arrives and makes a beeline to talk to Joe.

Pure chaos this week! OH, MAN.

Content Warning: Discussion of child death and stillborn child

This month, Megan tells the prequel to the Trial of Jacob Rubenstein; this is the story of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. While his assassination is one of the most widely covered stories in the history of true crime, there are so many conspiracy theories that surround it. We dive into some of them. There are also many tangentially related true crime stories that, in all honesty, could be their own full story... Maybe we’ll cover them someday?

We are bringing back the tarot readings for every episode of Clayton’s season of The Bachelor. Megan asked the Final Rose Tarot cards what we can expect from this week of The Bachelor. Megan pulled the 3 of Roses, AKA the Next Destination card. This card is all about progression and looking ahead on a global scale. We’re thinking the card is about Mexico and certain Bachelor in Paradise auditions.

Honestly, this was a mess. It was messy and just a mess. It was truly chaos. We see lots of recaps of the season, which feels like we saw it yesterday. Shanae gets WAY TOO MUCH screen time and doesn’t address any of the terrible things she said about ADHD. We hear the women screech at each other. We see some pretty cold hot seats, but we do get some IG DM tea from two ladies. Overall, we are just glad that the end is finally near. We are excited to see some of these women on BIP, Megan is standing firm in her boycott if You-Know-Who is on the beach.

This week we are highlighting Teddi! She was very open and vulnerable about her experience on the show and upbringing during the hot seat. While we wish she would have directly addressed Clayton’s comment about her not looking like a virgin, we did like the sex-positive things she had to say. Make sure to follow her here!

We are joined by one of our faves... It’s Amanda from Drinking the Kool-Aid Podcast!

This week we see the conclusion of the Brendan and Pieper drama and it ends in a pretty epic disrespectful fashion. We also get our third rose ceremony of the season, with a special rose going to Natasha. We get two new arrivals, who both have their own date card; Blake Monar (who we don’t know) goes on a date with Tia (aka Someone Who Shall Not Be Named) and Dr. Joe Park goes on a date with Natasha. Dr. Joe and Natasha’s date does not end well. We also see some love exchanged between Serena P. and Joe.

This week’s episode was full of ups and downs for the BIPOC points. We saw Natasha and Dr. Joe on a date. We heard from Jessenia, Pieper, Deandra, Maurissa, Riley, Thomas, Tammy, Aaron, and Serena P. We also, briefly, saw Mari, Ivan, and Abigail. Danielle gave 3 points each, for special guests Lil Jon and Tituss Burgess. She takes away 5 points for the over-sexualization of Riley and Maurissa, again. She gives 10 points for Natasha receiving that bonus rose from Paula and Wells, but then takes away 10 points for Brenden still getting between the Natasha / Dr. Joe date. Lastly, she takes away 10 points for the Ivan swerve. We know if Megan and Amanda had their way, the total BIPOC points would be 0 for the Ivan shade! All in all, the total is 59 points in regards to diversity.

Megan wanted to base a story on how Brendan was leading a double life, but this story twisted in a way that Megan was not expecting, so she went with it.

Paige Birgfield was a loving single mother of three young kids who disappeared on June 28, 2007. She was missing for five years before her remains were located, and during the investigation, information comes out that surprises her family and friends... Paige is leading a double life...
