S1 Ep35: How to build an engaged and active community for social impact online with Kiran Kaur
01/14/21 • 30 min
They envisioned a space where young women of colour could feel understood and supported in their pursuits and overcome cultural and societal challenges. It's not something they could find so they created it.
They started with no budget, no networks, no business plan and no community and in four years, have built a platform of over 12,000 social media followers, supported thousands of young women of colour directly through various programmes and initiatives and earned some awards along the way including:
- One of Creative England's top 50 most exciting, innovative and disruptive creative companies
- Most Influential Leadership Development Enterprise UK
- Kiran has just been awarded Best Digital CEO 2020
After working with me in my Sell to Corporate course, Kiran has now developed an offer helping other organisations to utilise the power of social media to build and engage their target communities and authentically lead an EDI (equity, diversity and inclusion) path within their organisation.
In this episode we discuss:
- The challenges Kiran faced when she didn't pursue the path that was expected of her
- Creating the space and support she was looking for but couldn't find, so those behind her didn't have to face the same barriers
- The award-winning initiatives GirlDreamer has designed and led
- How my Sell to Corporate course helped her identify her unique gifts that she could sell to generate additional income
- How you can fill out your programmes and offers using social media

S1 Ep34: Pivoting in response to Covid-19 in 2020 with Jen Baughan
To end the year I wanted to share two inspiring stories of social entrepreneurs who have exceeded their revenue goals, despite real challenges to their social enterprises in 2020, due to covid-19.
There have been a lot of challenges for all kinds of businesses this year and I'm not in anyway trying to distract from this or say "you just need to try harder" by sharing these stories. My purpose is to share hope, and ensure you hear it's absolutely possible to reach and exceed what you think is possible even when the unexpected happens.
In this second interview, I speak to my best friend and colleague, Jen Baughan, co-Founder and CEO of Solutions for the Planet (the social enterprise we set up together in 2013).
I wanted to get Jen back on the podcast to share her journey of delivering her schools programme in 2020, despite all schools closing in March due to covid-19. I wanted to share how Jen and her team decided to pivot how they delivered their programme so that the students and schools involved in their programme could still benefit despite not being in school. Not only did they successfully deliver a schools programme, they also exceeded their annual income goal by £10k.
In this episode we discuss:
- How Jen has developed Solutions for the Planet over the last 8 years
- The "threat" they faced in March with the prospect of schools closing and why they decided to continue it
- What they had to do to pivot their schools programme to move it online so students, teachers and mentors could still participate
- The process & experience of this huge shift in the way they delivered their programme over a 3 week period
- The results and highlights Jen and her team have seen, including being awarded a WISE 100 woman
- Jen's top tips for other social entrepreneurs wanting to adapt and grow in challenging times

S1 Ep36: My Aligned Sales Approach
As social entrepreneurs pursuing a social and/or environmental mission our values matter. Which is often why I find my clients struggle with the idea of selling or generating income from selling.
It's not that selling is bad but their perception of what selling is.
My Aligned Sales Approach is based on the principle that you can sell and generate income from sales in a way that feels aligned to you, your business values and brand.
Sales don't have to be aggressive, manipulative, flashy, persuasive, forced. They can be whatever you want them to be.
They can be about creating an incredible experience for your clients, aligned to your values.
That's what I share in this episode, the key parts to creating your own aligned sales strategy, so you can feel comfortable, confident and excited about attracting and engaging new customers and clients.
