From LGBTQIA to she/her/hers, the language, descriptions, and ideological frameworks are ever-evolving. Gender identity is separate from gender expression. And these categories are also separate from sexual orientation. I self-identify as a cisgender woman whose sexual orientation affirms my attraction to men. What does all this mean? And how do you use the word "they" when referencing a single person??

It's Pride Month, June 2024, and we will deep dive into the LGBTQ community using the words that matter most to them (plural!). Use the handy references below to further research topics that have systematically changed over the last 25 years.

Embark on a journey of self-discovery, where you can explore your own gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. This exploration will equip you with the knowledge of your own pronouns, empowering you to confidently express your identity when asked. Remember, your journey is unique and valuable, and it's time to start embracing it.

As a diversity professional, I've had my own transformative journey of understanding and embracing LGBTQIA+ terminology. It's a process that requires a deep dive into upgrading your language and perspective. I urge you to embark on this journey of self-discovery, to truly 'know the self'. This self-awareness will help you understand your own place on the spectrum before engaging in meaningful conversations with others.

DEI IS LEGAL IN THE USA!!

In this powerful episode of Conversations with Carole, host Carole Copeland Thomas breaks down the critical guidance issued by 16 Attorneys General in support of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA). With the Biden administration out and Trump’s new policies aiming to dismantle DEI efforts nationwide, these state leaders are pushing back, reminding businesses that DEIA remains legal, essential, and beneficial.

Key Topics Covered:

  • The February 13, 2025, announcement from 16 state Attorneys General reaffirming the legality and necessity of DEIA initiatives.
  • Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell and Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s leadership in co-sponsoring this critical guidance.
  • The growing legal challenges as Trump's executive orders attempt to curtail workplace diversity programs.
  • Why businesses should stand firm—DEIA not only fosters equity but also strengthens the workforce, enhances company culture, and improves profitability.
  • A breakdown of the 10 key takeaways from the guidance, including legal protections, economic benefits, and the ongoing fight against misinformation.

Why It Matters:
With over 70 executive orders from the Trump administration targeting DEI, the pressure on companies to abandon inclusive policies is growing. However, these 16 AGs emphasize that DEIA remains lawful and crucial for both legal compliance and workplace success. Their collective stance serves as a lifeline for businesses navigating these turbulent times.

Final Thoughts:
Carole passionately calls on individuals, businesses, and advocacy groups to push back—through civic engagement, corporate resilience, and community activism. The fight for DEIA isn’t just about policies; it’s about people, values, and the future of workplace equity in America.

Listen now to stay informed, stay empowered, and stand up for DEIA!

A Special Edition Of Conversations With Carole

Young revelers danced the night away in the heart of the Israeli desert, their joyous celebration turning into a harrowing dash for survival at the break of day. Innocent families perished within the secure confines of their kibbutz, desperately clinging to life as they remained devoid of any military aid.

Meanwhile, the vulnerable, both young and old, cowered in fear as missiles rained down upon the buildings beside them in Gaza. These are the unsung heroes and victims of the ravages of warfare – men, women, children, couples, families, and individuals from both Israel and Gaza – all caught in the crossfire of a brutal conflict with no clear victor in sight.

Today, we sit down with criminal justice expert and acclaimed sociologist Dr. Stephanie Cappadona of Curry College to delve into the profound and enduring impacts of the Israeli-Hamas Conflict on us all.

Cartagena, Colombia, was the first stop on my South American cruise on the Norwegian Sun. I was delighted that Dani Garcia, my fantastic Tour Guide, allowed me to interview her for my podcast. She'll take us through the city's historical adventures that date back to 1533. From San Pedro Claver, the famous priest who dedicated his life to helping and saving the enslaved people of the region, to Getsemani, the hip and trendy neighborhood of Cartagena, to the Palenque women in their bold and colorful outfits who represent the first free town for Africans in America... Cartagena is an amazing historic representation of the past fused with the present.

The fifth largest city in Columbia and the second largest in the region after Barranquilla, Cartagena was founded on June 1, 1533, and named after the city of the same name in Spain. In 1984, its colonial walled city and fortress were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Mixed architecture includes colonial, republican, and Italian styles intertwined into a rich history that dates back centuries.

I purchased my tour on www.getyourguide.com.

Dani works for Nexperience Tours that can be found on the Get Your Guide website.

As we end our salute to Women's History Month, there are big shoes to fill when the conversation turns to two great Americans. One was a national icon who sat at the table with the great civil rights leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The other was a local/regional hero, the first African-American hired as a news reporter for WBZ TV here in Boston. Regardless of their popularity on the national stage, their effectiveness is far-reaching and has had social and economic implications for many years.

Dr. Dorothy Height was a trailblazing pioneer whose determination to champion the cause of Black and Brown communities was light years ahead of those who wanted gradual progress. Dr. Height was born in 1912 in Richmond, Virginia, and lived a robust 98 years until her passing in 2010. I knew her as the National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and as my sorority sister. I had the pleasure of meeting her on several occasions and always admired her outrageously beautiful hats.

Sarah-Ann Shaw was a fiercely proud and feisty woman of action. Her role in Boston civil rights activities led her to become the first African-American reporter and journalist for WBZ TV, where she served for 31 years from 1969 to 2000. Everyone knew and loved Sarah Ann. You knew that when she reported on the news stories, it would be fair and accurate. She even deliberated on joining the television station because she never wanted to compromise her integrity. That's what we all loved about her.

Sarah Ann passed away on March 21, 2024 at the age of 90. Her daughter Klare and their family will hold a memorial service for Sarah-Ann on April 27, 2024, at my church, Bethel AME, in Boston.

In preparing for this broadcast I talked to Klare and she reminded me that her mother admired the work I was doing in diversity, equity, and inclusion. I was deeply humbled just to hear those comments. Her legacy was so widespread that a friend and colleague of mine in the United Kingdom read about her in her local newspaper and wanted to know more.

The late and great Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm said, "Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth." We can all now say that the rent has been paid in full for Dr. Dorothy Height and Sarah-Ann Shaw. May they both rest in power as they continue to inspire us with their earthly actions and deeds.
