Confessions of a Working Writer - Week 7 - Morning Walks and Short Stories

Week 7 - Morning Walks and Short Stories

Confessions of a Working Writer

There were easily 20 things I was supposed to do this morning, things that would have benefitted me, but I needed a walk. With everything going on in the world and all of the associated noise, I needed to get out into the cool morning air and put one foot in front of the other. It's the same way I needed to take a break and work on a short story last week.

And then I started worrying about my one year goal. But is the finish line really what I want, or just a change?

Week 6 - Why You Need a Friend

Somewhere in your journey to become a writer, you will receive a swift kick to the face. For aspiring literary writers, there is a life of long hours, less fame/money than you'd expect, and fairly consistent stress. You will wrestle with ideas, blockages, technique, critics, coaching suggestions, and the assorted miasma of defining your "personal brand."
Here's the secret, you don't need any of those quick fixes. What you need is a friend.
Specifically, you need to build a community with other writers. Not for who they can introduce you to, or for what you think they might do in the future, but because you need someone who knows what you're going through to know how to get through it. Kind of like AA.

Week 8 - Bad at Grace

I'm not very good at cutting myself slack. Yeah, the idea of grace sounds awesome in theory, but my practice is a little weak. Why is that? Why do we put so much pressure on ourselves? I don't know. But last week life gave me some time to think about it.
