Tell Me Your Story
Confessions of a Working Writer
06/06/19 • 10 min
Everyone has a story. What's yours? So many people respond by saying they aren't much of a storyteller, but that's not true. You were born a storyteller, with all of the necessary tools and skills inside you. So why do we stop believing that? And what is your story?

Week 3 - Distracted
Confessions of a Working Writer
08/24/20 • 14 min
I wanted to have something brilliant this week.
I wanted to talk about setting up a new routine, getting into a rhythm, and how the work on projects is just soaring by at lightspeed. Those are the things I wanted to talk about, but I can't.
The truth is, I've been distracted. A lot.
But don't we all find ourselves distracted most days? Even if just for a moment? And how do we get through that?
How do we move forward from distraction?
Join me for this week's step in my 52-week journey to make something happen in these Confessions of a Working Writer.

The Thing About Mentors
Confessions of a Working Writer
02/20/20 • 28 min
I took a look back at mentors and the powerful effect they had on my life. But not everything was roses, some of it was hard, and in the hardest lessons I learned the most.

Bonus: Doom and Gloom
Confessions of a Working Writer
01/27/20 • 17 min
I am more than halfway through my life.
And there's no guarantee I get that far. Truth it, I could get hit by a bus when I leave my apartment today. What happens to everything I wanted to accomplish? It goes unfinished.
Not a fun way to look at it. In a world where we emphasize the positive, where we search through every mystical means to make success not a grind, we tend to look away from messages like this.
Why? Because it's a hit in the face.
But we need them, and my latest one came from the death of an NBA player, his daughter, and my impending 40th birthday.

Confession: My Own Worst Enemy
Confessions of a Working Writer
01/20/20 • 11 min
I realized something.
The blog that brought me back to writing is also the thing I'm using to keep me from working on the projects I really want. Why? Lot's of reasons. People like it, and it feels good to do work people like. But there's more to it than that. A lot more.

Do You Love It?
Confessions of a Working Writer
11/14/19 • 14 min
We talk about being passionate about what you do, about finding your calling and living it. I've been getting back to basics lately and thinking about the difference between being passionate about what you do and loving it.
Do I really love what I do? How do I know? Aren't love and passion the same thing?
Join me for another Confession of a Working Writer about getting back to basics and learning about loving what you do in the most unlikely of places.

Limits
Confessions of a Working Writer
10/31/19 • 20 min
I've been thinking a lot about limits lately.
When I was a young writer, just really starting to learn my craft, I thought limits were garbage. I was better than forms, better than rules, I knew everything because I was so wildly creative it wasn't funny.
I thought the same thing about my life.
But what I've come to realize is that limits actually make us better. In fact, you can't really be great without forms, rules, restrictions, and limits. True story.

Depression, My Love of Star Wars, Connecting with Hope
Confessions of a Working Writer
09/03/19 • 19 min
I almost didn't get an episode this week. Depression is something I have lived with most of my life, something I've spent a lot of time studying and working on. It's like low tide for me as a human being, but I create because I love it, because I have to. So let's talk about those lows, my love of Star Wars, and the most amazing connection I had with Hope here in Charleston, SC. Oh, and did I mention that the annual purge has started ahead of Hurricane Dorian's arrival?

Week 7 - Morning Walks and Short Stories
Confessions of a Working Writer
09/21/20 • 12 min
There were easily 20 things I was supposed to do this morning, things that would have benefitted me, but I needed a walk. With everything going on in the world and all of the associated noise, I needed to get out into the cool morning air and put one foot in front of the other. It's the same way I needed to take a break and work on a short story last week.
And then I started worrying about my one year goal. But is the finish line really what I want, or just a change?
