Confessions of a Working Writer

Matt Hampton

Matt’s just an everyday working writer. You may have heard of him, but he’s not a household name. He’s just someone trying to figure out this writing life. Every week he’s sharing the things he’s learned, what’s worked for him or hasn’t, or is talking with another working writer about their journey. How do you make it as a writer? Maybe one day Matt will find the answer, but until then you can join him for confessions, triumphs, failures, and explorations of this writing life.

Week 2 - Slow is Steady, Steady is Fast

Confessions of a Working Writer

play

08/17/20 • 15 min

I was planning on talking about setting a new morning routine in my new home this week.
Reality had different plans. Moving was chaotic, setting up my office took longer than I thought, and I just didn't feel like a new routine was a priority for me. Honestly, most of life is a balancing act between order and chaos.
As a creative, I tend to prefer chaos. But how in the world do you get things done like that? Simple, you remember one simple truth. Slow is steady, and steady is fast.
Join me for Week 2 of my 52 Week journey to make things happen on Confessions of a Working Writer.

Week 1 - Moving and "Them"

Confessions of a Working Writer

play

08/10/20 • 17 min

There was a saying I heard a lot when I was in the military. "Bloom where you're planted." It's not a bad saying when you're in the military. You only have so much choice about where you go or what position you will fill, so you need to learn to be happy and thrive wherever you end up.
But I'm not in the military anymore.
Now I do have control and for too many years I've sat around trying to bloom where I was planted. It didn't work. I'm starting out a new year, and the first order of business is moving someplace where I can bloom better.
Now if I could just get "them" to shut up. You know "them?"
Oh, you don't?

Season 2 Announcement

Confessions of a Working Writer

play

07/30/20 • 11 min

For the past year and some change, we've been working on this little podcast. We've talked about a lot of different topics. posted a bunch of rants, and told some interesting stories.
But it wasn't an easy year. The world around us changed a lot in just about 6 months' time. My mental health became a bigger challenge and I had my own couple of weeks with COVID-19. The truth is I am almost halfway through my 40th year and I need to make some changes.
That's a story I want to tell, and that's the story Season 2 of Confessions of a Working Writer will try to tell.
Coming August 10, 2020!!!

Knowing Our Role

Confessions of a Working Writer

play

06/02/20 • 61 min

A lot is happening in the world today. Murders, protests, pandemics, and riots have impacted all of us in one way or the other.
What's the role of the writer in all of this? What's the role of the artist? It's hard to tell on the best of days, but in turbulent times it can be even more confusing. I'd planned on bringing in my new co-host with an easier question to answer. But that wasn't in the cards.
Join us as we talk about the role of art, the artist, and conversation in society and turbulent times. We might even find an answer in an hour.

Creativity and Mental Health

Confessions of a Working Writer

play

05/28/20 • 67 min

We talk a lot about mental health when we talk about creativity. Writers, artists, and musicians are often as remembered for their difficulties as they are for their work. In fact, this is one of the most popular research topics related to human creativity.
Recently I decided to take some time away from social media because of my mental health. Between the pandemic, my ongoing struggles, and the constant messaging from those channels, I found myself falling deeper and deeper down a hole.
It's something I have gotten used to dealing with.
I've lived with mental health issues my entire life. I've also been a creative for most of that time. So I wanted to take some time and have a conversation with my friend and colleague, Georgia Hertz, about being a creative with mental health issues.

Whitney McDuff

What is storytelling?
It's a question without a simple answer, one that varies wildly based on style, medium, end personal experience. I've been a storyteller most of my life and now I make my living telling stories, both my own and those of other people. For me, storytelling is essential to the human experience. But, if I've learned anything, it's that we often find the truth by seeking outside ourselves.
Whitney and I have been friends for a while now, ever since first connecting when I started my blog. Over the time we've gotten to know each other I've come to respect Whit for a number of things; her passion, her presence, her drive, and her storytelling. As the pandemic started lockdown, I was struck by Whitney sharing storytime with her children over Facebook Live and knew if there was someone who could help me define storytelling, it's her.

I met Georgia Hertz years ago. We became good friends and slowly grew into a mentor/mentee relationship, the first one I've ever had as a writer. She's a brilliant poet, a historian, and an incredibly talented singer/songwriter. So I reached out to her to help me answer this question about the meaning of storytelling.

Week 3 - Distracted

Confessions of a Working Writer

I wanted to have something brilliant this week.
I wanted to talk about setting up a new routine, getting into a rhythm, and how the work on projects is just soaring by at lightspeed. Those are the things I wanted to talk about, but I can't.
The truth is, I've been distracted. A lot.
But don't we all find ourselves distracted most days? Even if just for a moment? And how do we get through that?
How do we move forward from distraction?
Join me for this week's step in my 52-week journey to make something happen in these Confessions of a Working Writer.
