Doomtrigger

This week Brian is joined by Robbie and Kenne from Doomtrigger.

Doomtrigger are a 4-piece metal band hailing from Stellenbosch, South Africa. Initially intended as a solo studio project, founding member Kenne Loubser started writing a selection of songs during Covid lockdown in 2020.

A few weeks into the journey, Kenne learnt that a friend and fellow metal enthusiast, Jason Smith, had just returned to South Africa after teaching in Vietnam for 3 years. Fast forward 3 years, Kenne approached Jason about collaborating on a single. This turned into Jason becoming a full time member and lead vocalist of the project. Realizing they were onto something special, they knew Doomtrigger had to be a full band. The search was on.

In June 2021 Drummer Etienne Nel aka "Frank", was added to the group. Kenne and Frank

became friends in their college days and together with another close friend, lived together in their early working years. During that time, they had regular jam sessions playing mostly Slipknot covers and metal improv - much to the dismay of conservative neighbours in the area. Predominantly a rock drummer, this was the first time Frank started exploring metal drumming. It wasn't until 12 years later, upon joining DOOMTRIGGER, that his true potential as a metal drummer was unlocked.

Eventually an idea sparked to invite Robert Blair, former rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist of hard rock outfit Four A Penny, to the pack. Ken and Rob were former band mates in the aforementioned group and had become good friends over the years. Appreciating Rob's love and passion for the metal genre, Ken had in fact been sharing snippets of DOOMTRIGGER material with Rob over the course of a few months as a

soundboard for thoughts and feedback. So, when Rob was eventually approached in July 2021, it was an easy conversation. The pack knew that over and above the fact that Rob would settle comfortably on bass, he would also bring the edge of a second extreme vocal to the mix, nudging the band's offering to a new dimension. Finally, the line-up was complete.

In its short existence the band has already made notable waves in the local metal scene in South Africa, attracting attention from industry peers and metal fans alike. The band made their live debut at Trenchtown on 11 June 2022 and saw the formation of a pit mere moments into their first song, a rare sight for a band on live debut, let alone first on the bill. The energy continued through the set and the reception was more than what the group could have hoped for. All and all a successful debut with praise from organisers, supporting bands and newly acquired fans alike, leaving the band humbled and hungry to continue their mission.

Tune in to hear all about:

On this episode Johni Holiday stops by again to share details on Ruff Majik's new album "Electric Ram" releasing on April 28th and the European Tour they are embarking on in August and October.

‘Elektrik Ram’, the latest album from South Africa’s megalithic Ruff Majik, is the kind of audio palate cleanser that we all yearn for from time to time. Kicking the vibe back to a sepia-toned era where bell-bottoms and fuzzed-out bass were de rigueur, the ‘Majik lads take a well-known template and drench it with their unique attitude and stoner-esque sensibilities.

Ruff Majik will be playing festivals and venues across Europe including Blue Moon Festival, Trafostation 61 Festival and Riffields. Stay tuned to their social media to stay up to date on further announcements.

On this episode Brian is joined by Jesse from Chokesetter.

Chokesetter formed in 2018 with a few old friends and longtime veterans from the local music scene in Northwest Indiana. Having played in notable separate bands for years, these gentlemen forged a path together that would form a heavy hitting band of crunchy riffs and smooth grooves.

Chokesetter combines several musical influences from Black Sabbath and Clutch all the way to Fu Manchu and passionately grind their wheelhouse in authentic feel-good rock-n-roll, stoner rock riffs and swing style blues. Chokesetter rises above the rest by being well seasoned and experienced in playing live to any kind of audience and making new fans wherever they play in any variation of lineup.

Each member of the band has played in front of audiences of all sorts for over 20 years giving them elevated experience in engaging the crowd regardless of being a support or a headlining act while presenting a professional and seasoned business attitude. All of the guys in the band would honestly say that they will never give up on their love for purely rocking out and working hard to manifest their long time dream of being on the big stage with the deep understanding that being in a band is a passion, a privilege, a relationship, a business, a commitment, and a wild ride with all the ups and downs and that no matter what, Chokesetter is in it to win it.

Tune in to hear all about:

This week Brian is joined by Keenan from Acid Magus.Acid Magus is an experimental rock outfit from Pretoria, South Africa. Doom, stoner, punk, psych, andclassic rock are all common themes. As huge fans of the rock greats (Zeppelin, Sabbath), stoner/desertrock behemoths (Kyuss, Sleep) as well as the tripped out psychedelic stylings of modern “psych” bandslike Slift. Acid Magus take inspiration from all kinds of great music, spanning the entire gamut from 60sHendrix/The Doors to Hawkwind and Scorpion at their heaviest, all the way to pretty much everythinginspired by Black Sabbath today. All this with maybe a little Alt Rock sensibility thrown in for goodmeasure. With an uncompromising, DIY approach to writing, Acid Magus promises to offer up only thebest, most impassioned musical works. Long, slow, heavy, soft, it’s all there, and it comes from theheart...Tune in to find out everything there is to know about Acid Magus.Songs included in this episode:1. Wyrd Syster2. Burnline

Concerts That Made Us

This week Brian is joined by Lauren and Jason from BURNLINE.

Songwriting duo, BURNLINE, is an ecosystem of sound. Comprised of transcendent, echoing vocals by Lauren Davis and steady, river-rippling guitar by Jason Mann, BURNLINE has played gigs both near and far, small and large. In one moment Mann is harmonizing with the chatter of winery patrons, in another Davis is opening for indie rock acts like Car Seat Headrest. Together, they boast grit and gravel, cotton-ball clouds and blue sky.

Davis has performed straight-forward rock most of her musical years. With the help of Mann, she found that her true voice is more country with a dash of blues. Mann has been a full-time musician for decades, and is the master of strings and ivory. The two collided when Davis was recruited to front another project. "Something clicked, and I'm loving the gritty and honest sound. He's insanely talented, and I think he pushes me to be more. I’m excited about what we've been able to create," Davis explained.

BURNLINE’s music flutters between smooth and gritty, empowered and vulnerable, landing right in your ventricles. Fans of Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris, and Kacey Musgraves will appreciate the duo’s raw storytelling and soulful melodies. They’re not prettied, they’re not sugar-coated, they’re definitely not songs you've heard...but they are absolutely relatable.

Tune in to hear all about:

  • The history and formation of BURNLINE.
  • The recording process of the debut EP Matches.
  • Jason and Lauren's influences.
  • Concert experiences
  • Future plans and much more.

This week Brian is joined by Merlin.

MERLIN's eccentric roots come from far and wide. Born and raised in Germany and Albania before settling in Boston, she has embraced her European story as an influence and cornerstone for her life and sound. At a young age, she used music as a means to learn English; and from that, began a euphoric musical exploration that became a career.

She isn't just an edgy-pop artist; MERLIN conducts her distinctive sound through a marque of mystery, beauty and poetry. If you ask her what her songs consist of, she'll tell you, "life, personal experience, death, and MAGIC."

On this episode we discuss:

Merlin's exposure to music growing up.

How she got to where she is in the music industry.

How she approaches songwriting.

What's in store for Merlin in 2022.

Songs included in this episode:

Panic Boom

This week Brian is joined by Chris McLernon. Chris is known for bands such as Cold Sweat, Cold Gin and Saigon Kick but he is here this week to share details on his new project Panic Boom.

This band of brothers was formed in 1994 when drummer Phil Varone parted ways with Saigon Kick setting out to form a new group. Varone, called life-long friends Tony Cortese (guitar), Randy Bates (vocals), and Saigon Kick bandmate, Bass Player Chris McLernon. Guitarist Sean Martin would complete the lineup. Panic Boom was born.

Boom's songwriting was immediate as they entered the recording studio to begin recording songs for Atlantic Records. Atlantic would eventually pass on the band, and each member would go onto other projects. The band would never break up, with Panic Boom, you are a member for life. The members call it “The Hotel California of bands.”

After twenty-five plus years dormant, Panic Boom began showing signs of activity when Varone called each bandmate asking if they would like to re-record one of the original songs for his new documentary, 30yrs a Drummer. What happened next was something no one saw coming. One song, turned into two songs, then three, then four and before long; Panic Boom had recorded a full-length album, of brand-new songs, mixed with the old songs.

As well as Panic Boom, Chris and Brian discuss Chris's early musical experiences and influences from jumping on a bed listening to the The Beatles as a child to playing in bands alongside Guns n Roses, Poison, Warrant, Jane's Addiction, Faster Pussycat and LA Guns to name a few. Hear all about Chris's amazing career and what the future holds.
