Sadly, in our day, it’s not uncommon to go online and see people who profess Christ teaching others with an assumed authority, though they really out not to be teaching at all. James says that those who teach will be judged more strictly, and goes on to tie teaching in with one’s ability to control their own tongue. So much damage is done day after day by people who either cannot control their tongues or who refuse to do so, and yet they also claim to be teachers or authorities. The mouth of the Lord’s servant should not release both cursing and blessing any more than you’d expect a saltwater spring to produce fresh water. Mark well the checklist that James gives at the end of our reading of the kind of wisdom that comes from above.
