Comix Paradox Podcast Presents

The Adventures of Superboy

In this intriguing podcast episode, we delve into the captivating world of "Superboy," a beloved American television series that underwent its own share of behind-the-scenes drama. Running from 1988 to 1992, this show, initially titled "Superboy" and later renamed "The Adventures of Superboy," was brought to life by the talented Salkind duo, Ilya and Alexander. Airing for a thrilling four seasons in syndication, it became a memorable part of pop culture.

Our narrative unfolds with John Haymes Newton stepping into the iconic shoes of Superboy in the series, alongside Stacy Haiduk, who portrayed Lana Lang. However, a noteworthy twist occurred in Season two, as actor Gerard Christopher took over the mantle of Superboy, carrying the character forward for the remainder of the show.

While the pilot episode offered a glimpse into life in Smallville, the heart of the series resided at the fictitious Shuster College in Florida. This dynamic backdrop allowed for the inclusion of various beloved comic book personas, including the formidable Lex Luthor, the loyal Pete Ross, the metallic menace Metallo, and the enigmatic Bizarro. The show also introduced new characters such as T.J. White, the son of Daily Planet editor Perry White, adding depth to the Superboy universe.

Behind the scenes, a legal showdown unfolded, as Warner Bros., the parent company of DC Comics, sought to maintain control over licensing for all Superman-related properties. This legal battle included "Superboy," despite it being a Salkind production under the Time Warner umbrella. Intriguingly, the show's distribution in the United States was handled by Viacom, which later merged with Paramount in 1994.

Due to the complexity of the legal entanglements and the protracted disputes between the Salkinds and Time Warner, "Superboy" has remained absent from American television screens since its initial syndicated run. An interesting wrinkle in this tale is that, unlike other Salkind productions related to Superman, Time Warner shares ownership of the "Superboy" footage with Viacom/Paramount and the Salkind family.

Join us in this episode as we unravel the fascinating story behind the "Superboy" series and explore the intricate web of legal challenges that have kept this iconic show out of the spotlight in recent years. ————————————————— This episode is sponsored by Deadly Grounds Coffee "Its good to get a little Deadly" https://deadlygroundscoffee.com
