Comix Paradox Podcast Presents

The Adventures of Superboy

In this intriguing podcast episode, we delve into the captivating world of "Superboy," a beloved American television series that underwent its own share of behind-the-scenes drama. Running from 1988 to 1992, this show, initially titled "Superboy" and later renamed "The Adventures of Superboy," was brought to life by the talented Salkind duo, Ilya and Alexander. Airing for a thrilling four seasons in syndication, it became a memorable part of pop culture.

Our narrative unfolds with John Haymes Newton stepping into the iconic shoes of Superboy in the series, alongside Stacy Haiduk, who portrayed Lana Lang. However, a noteworthy twist occurred in Season two, as actor Gerard Christopher took over the mantle of Superboy, carrying the character forward for the remainder of the show.

While the pilot episode offered a glimpse into life in Smallville, the heart of the series resided at the fictitious Shuster College in Florida. This dynamic backdrop allowed for the inclusion of various beloved comic book personas, including the formidable Lex Luthor, the loyal Pete Ross, the metallic menace Metallo, and the enigmatic Bizarro. The show also introduced new characters such as T.J. White, the son of Daily Planet editor Perry White, adding depth to the Superboy universe.

Behind the scenes, a legal showdown unfolded, as Warner Bros., the parent company of DC Comics, sought to maintain control over licensing for all Superman-related properties. This legal battle included "Superboy," despite it being a Salkind production under the Time Warner umbrella. Intriguingly, the show's distribution in the United States was handled by Viacom, which later merged with Paramount in 1994.

Due to the complexity of the legal entanglements and the protracted disputes between the Salkinds and Time Warner, "Superboy" has remained absent from American television screens since its initial syndicated run. An interesting wrinkle in this tale is that, unlike other Salkind productions related to Superman, Time Warner shares ownership of the "Superboy" footage with Viacom/Paramount and the Salkind family.

Join us in this episode as we unravel the fascinating story behind the "Superboy" series and explore the intricate web of legal challenges that have kept this iconic show out of the spotlight in recent years. ————————————————— This episode is sponsored by Deadly Grounds Coffee "Its good to get a little Deadly" https://deadlygroundscoffee.com

Superman in the Middle Ages with Kal on Comix Paradox

Kal's rocket landing in medieval England. Kal becomes a blacksmith, hiding his abilities at the urging of his father. He impulsively enters a tournament to impress the Lady Loisse, who is being held captive the Baron Luthor. Mighty Kal weakens when he meets Luthor, who wears a glowing green gem on a necklace. Luthor also discovers the rocket ship and has Kal work it into a suit of armour and a sword. Gibbons nicely mixes a tale of good versus evil and triumph alongside tragedy as the story builds toward a deadly, violent confrontation. Garcia-Lopez' art is well suited to the setting with lots of depth and detail.

Comix Paradox Podcast Presents

Superior written by Mark Millar and illustrated by Leinil Francis Yu

Simon Pooni, an angry, bitter 12-year-old boy with multiple sclerosis, idolizes superheroes, particularly Superior, a Superman analogue. An alien monkey named Ormon appears at Simon's bedside, informing the boy that of all the people on Earth, he has been granted the honor of being bestowed a single magic wish. Simon is then transformed into Superior.

After playing the role of Superior for a week, he learns that Ormon is actually a demon incarnate, and he must sell his soul to the devil in order to remain as Superior. He is given 24 hours to decide, and is returned to his old body. The demon approaches an old bully of Simon, and offers him a similar wish, to become Superior's fictional nemesis, Abraxas; the only caveat is that he must pledge himself to Satan. Simon must then choose whether to become Superior again and save the planet from imminent destruction at the cost of his own soul.

To force Simon to choose, Abraxas begins destroying the city. Simon transforms into Superior and fights both Abraxas and Ormon. Although Superior defeats them in battle, Ormon gloats that he still has Simon's soul, until he realizes that Simon (as Superior) is immortal, and that his soul can never be collected. Ormon is dragged back to Hell as punishment for his failure, and Simon reverts to his mortal form. The world honors Superior as a fallen hero, thinking him killed in battle, and Simon returns to his former life, but now at peace with himself.

This issue asks the following question: "... What if Mary Jane had never lost the baby, and Spider-Man had a Spider-Girl?" It focuses on the outcome of one part of the Clone Saga, in which Mary Jane had apparently miscarried May, though the baby was secretly smuggled by Alison Mongrain to Norman Osborn

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

I've always liked "alternate reality" comics, and how they would force me to learn/read more of the stories they were based on- I would finish a Marvel Comics "What If...?", for example, and then want to know what the REAL story was and how it all differed.

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

An appreciation for story altogether, (hopefully) some good laughs, and the curiosity to check out the types of stories we're discussing. Oh, AND a burning desire to keep listening to the show.

Which episode should someone start with?

"WHAT IF JANE FOSTER HAD FOUND THE HAMMER OF THOR?" It's such a terrible book, and Odin is a world-class misogynist. We rip it apart, and I think I even apologized to my co-hosts for subjecting them to it! But it's a pretty funny episode.

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

They're all my babies! I'm more interested in hearing what other folks' favorite episodes are.

Which episode are you most proud of?

"Millar & McNiven's Nemesis"

What is your vision for your show?

To get folks into different takes on characters they may already know and love, and to find the core of them within each tale. And to enjoy any divergence for what it may be, too. Plus, DC & MARVEL- bring back Elseworlds and monthly "What If...?'s" already!

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

The Dork Knight, and Throwdown Thursday.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

I wanted to call it "Comix Parallax," but figured that might confuse Green Lantern fans, since one of the major characters became a villain named Parallax in the 90's. "Paradox" was the next best thing I could think of (especially because I also love time-travel stories), and I really wanted that "X" in each word. Heh.
