College Is Fine, Everything's Fine - #22 Why Choose Sleep Part 1: How Sleeping Well is Critical to Thriving in College
play

02/10/23 • 27 min

A recent study showed that over 70% of college students are getting consistently less than 7 hours of sleep a night. That’s not a great number, especially when you consider that healthy sleep habits are linked to higher college GPAs. So if sleep is so important to doing well in college, why is it often at the bottom of the priority list?

Sleeping is underrated in college and is usually saved for the weekends after a long week of studying and a weekend of celebrating your academic efforts. To make matters worse, college students are often managing a lot of responsibilities, between school, friends, family, work, and sleep seems like the only thing they can sacrifice to get it all done. In this two part series, we talk to a college student who realized the consequences of poor sleep and got things back on track, and we talk to two sleep experts who provide all the sleep facts and tips to help make your sleep better.

In this week’s episode we sit down with Dr. Shelby Harris, a nationally renowned sleep expert who sets us straight on why we shouldn’t skimp on sleep. Make sure to follow her @sleepdocshelby for easy tips and helpful reminders.

College Is Fine, Everything's Fine - #2 Finding Balance in the Extremes: Part 1 (Dialectics)
play

09/16/22 • 26 min

College is a time of extremes. Incredible freedom and intense pressure. Loving your independence and missing pieces of home. So many new people to meet, yes! And so many new people to meet, nooooo!
In psych speak we call these extremes "dialectics," the idea that two seemingly opposite truths can be occurring at the same time. This is a big topic so we're breaking it down a bit. In this episode (Part 1), we talk to "K," a rising junior at a liberal arts college who describes some of the extremes she faces.
We'll also share some of the most common dialectics people struggle with in college:
1) I want to try new things, and I want to remember who I am.
2) I'm excited to be here, and I'm terrified to be here.
3) I should be living in the moment, and I should be preparing for my future.
4) I need to push myself out of my comfort zone, and I need to stick to my core values.
5) I need to go out and have a good time, and I need to take care of my body.
Take a listen and see if you notice any of these dialectics in your life. In Part 2, which we'll air on September 23rd, we discuss some practical ways to bring more balance into your life when you find yourself too polarized on one extreme or the other.

“I don’t belong here.”
“Everyone else knows what to do.”
“When will people figure out I’m an imposter?”

This is the third episode in our shame series, and it helps answer one of the questions we get asked most.
“Am I the only one who feels like an imposter at college?”
Well, we brought out a real heavy hitter when we interviewed Dr. Jill Stoddard, veteran psychologist, podcaster and author of Imposter No More. I mean, did we nail it or what? Tune in if you:

  • Have ever wondered “Do I belong here?”
  • Work hard to make sure people don’t find out you’re an “imposter” on campus
  • Want to know what kind of imposter you are (pssst, Sarah is a Super-Human Imposter)
  • Are interested in hearing ways to beat this mindset and live a “full-sized” life

Make sure to take Jill's quiz to get started on your "beat imposterism" journey!

College Is Fine, Everything's Fine - #52 The Friendship Matrix: A LifeHack for Building Healthy Friendships in College
play

10/16/24 • 22 min

College makes it very easy to find friends. You’ve got loads of time, your pick of social events, party ready dorm rooms, and hard classes to bond over. But for many students, finding friends isn’t the problem. The challenge is finding quality friendships.

Introducing the “Friendship Matrix,” a lifehack to help you build healthy and fun friendships in a new, fun way.

Make sure to listen to this episode if you want to:

  • Find out whether you believe in the friendship myth about what a “good friend” means
  • Discover how different friend “vibes” meet different needs, from reliable “anchors” to fun, outgoing “adventurers.”
  • Explore the importance of give-and-take in friendships and how to spot imbalances in your social circle.
  • Learn why it’s valuable to step outside of your comfort zone and explore friendships with different types of people.
  • Reflect on your role in your friendships—are you giving or taking more, and how can you bring more balance?

And ok, should we have created a podcast episode that is very dependent on a visual? Maybe not. Did we figure that out mid-recording? We did! If you want a visual while you watch, we’ve shared it in our socials, and you can go straight to it here: https://tr.ee/kD3Sabhgon

Or let’s be real, just watch our clips on TikTok :) Happy listening!

College Is Fine, Everything's Fine - #37 Walk With Me: Dr. Matthew Kane Shares a Message of Perseverance
play

11/02/23 • 29 min

In this week’s episode, we tackle the incredibly important topic of race on campus. We were so lucky to have author and psychologist Dr. Matthew Kane guide us through this conversation with such a level of depth, warmth and intelligence. Yes, Sarah and Dr. Kane discuss his book Walk with Me, which highlights stories of black men navigating the COVID pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement. Just as importantly, Dr. Kane shares why their stories are equally important today, helping us understand why we need to pay more attention to the experiences of people of color in collage.

You’ll hear Dr. Kane

  1. Talk about the superpower of transitioning a negative to a positive,
  2. Encourage people of color to take the “superpower cape” off when needed,
  3. Discuss the importance of building your support team,
  4. Tell us how people he’s spoken to have found power in education and creativity,
  5. Give us a glimpse of how he finds solace during dark times (Hint: It involves James Brown. Hop to minute 21, you won’t regret it)

A thread through all of our episodes is finding balance, and today’s show is no exception. To quote our guest, “We're reminding ourselves that we have the abilities to do these great things, and it is not an expectation that we have to do these great things.

Finding your people in college isn't always easy. Keeping them? Sometimes that’s even trickier. On today's episode, we talk to our first expert guest, Professor Amy DiBernardo. She’s a licensed clinical social worker, an instructor at New York University and a former J.Crew junkie (emphasis on former).
We chat about the 5 obstacles we see on campus that keep our clients stuck in a whole range of social situations:
1) Not knowing what to do (lack of skill)
2) Thoughts getting in the way (worry thoughts, “what if’s”)
3) Big emotions (being too dysregulated to communicate well)
4) Indecisiveness (can’t make a decision about what’s right)
5) Environment too powerful (people in power positions not cooperating)
We all open up about our than-professional moments in college. But good news, we all managed to push past “the regrets” to live another day. And so can you.
As you listen this week, think about which obstacles sound the most familiar. We’ll be coming back with specific tips in the following few episodes. Use today’s chat as your guide to honing in on what future episode you want to listen to.

#43 Your Campus Guide to Nutrition

College Is Fine, Everything's Fine

play

02/16/24 • 33 min

Busy schedules, late nights, and erratic sleeping patterns often lead to inconsistent eating habits in college. A diet of ramen, pizza, and endless supplies of coffee is the norm on many campuses. We know that taking care of your body is just as important as getting a 4.0 (and maybe the key to getting one), but college life often makes it difficult to avoid bad eating habits. As two former college students who may have not made the wisest dining choices, we knew we had to find an expert on nutrition for this episode. This week we sat down with Rena Bruckman, MS, RD-N, a registered dietitian/nutritionist specializing in the treatment of weight and disordered eating. Rena helps lay out a different approach to making more nourishing, intentional choices in the dining hall. From how to handle your dining hall phobia, to what snacks to stock in your dorm room, this episode will help map out a college meal plan that is both delicious and nutritious.
