In this episode, I chat with Ian Myers, founder and CEO of Oceans, a talent agency bridging skilled professionals in Sri Lanka with U.S. companies.

Ian’s impressive journey includes scaling his business from zero to $10 million in under two years, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

A fellow Tintin enthusiast, Ian’s career has been an adventure in itself—spanning the U.S., Japan, literature, banking, venture capital, entrepreneurship, and gaming. His mantra? Follow your gut, embrace experiences, adapt, and keep moving forward.

Key Highlights of Our Interview:

Why Tintin Beats Tech Titans: Ian’s Unconventional Role Model

“My role model is Tintin. He’s always up for an adventure, exploring new places, and embracing different cultures. That’s the kind of life I want to live.”

Zen and the Art of Leadership: How Buddhism Shaped My Approach to Chaos

“Buddhism has a lot of excellent teachings that are applicable to running a business... It’s at its core, a method of grounding yourself through honesty in your reality and the potential of everything around you.”

Comparison Anxiety: Why Scrolling LinkedIn Might Be Ruining Your Life

“I talk to young people today, and they’re always comparing themselves. They’ll say, ‘Oh, this person who went to my college is now a vice president. My life is ruined.’ I’ve never really worried about my career; I just follow what’s interesting.”

Experiencing Ageism Across Cultures: From Japan to CEO at 26

“In Japan, age almost becomes the most important thing about you—your track record and success play a much smaller role. That was something I couldn’t personally tolerate.”

Skeptical by Nature: Why Ian Questions AI Hype

“The technology is impressive and important, but like most great innovations, the adoption curve will likely be much longer than people expect. If you look back at tech predictions, the timeline for changing the world is almost always too short.”

Part Two.

Once upon a time in LA, I worked at TCW Asset Management, managing billion-dollar bond funds with Jeffrey Gundlach, the “Bond King.” Today, I’m talking with someone who takes a different investment route—Collin Plume, an expert in precious metals.

This conversation isn’t about selling gold; it’s about tackling real-life challenges like family finance, retirement planning, and raising financially savvy kids. If you’re navigating any of these areas, Collin’s insights and inspiring journey will give you plenty to think about.

Part 2 of a 2-part series on Collin’s people-first approach to building financial security.

Key Highlights of Our Interview:

Gold, Real Estate, and Learning New Tricks: Why Diversifying is the New Smart

“Be willing to learn about a new investment or a new strategy every year, whether you decide to do it or not. But I think being willing to learn about it is important. It will help you and it’ll keep you sharp.”

Beware of Finfluencer Hype: Not Everything That Shines Is Gold

“Too often, people take influencers at face value, believing that the most engaging video equals the best advice. In reality, it’s important to fact-check and do your own research because many influencers are just paid promoters, not experts.”

Do Your Research: Don’t Let Algorithms Make Your Financial Decisions

“Algorithms don’t care if the advice is good; they only care if the content is appealing. So when it comes to financial decisions, it’s on you to dig deeper, check multiple sources, and make sure the influencers you follow are legit.”

The Real Cost of Reckless Spending: Teaching Financial Discipline to the Next Generation

“As a family, we prioritize experiences like travel and education over material goods. I’ve shown my children the gold and silver I’ve set aside for them and explained how these assets will be worth something significant in the future. Whether they want to start a business or pay for college, these investments will be there for them."

“I make sure my kids know that money isn’t something to be taken lightly. Whether it’s explaining mortgages to my 8-year-old or discussing the importance of not being wasteful with their toys, they need to understand that everything has a cost. I often use examples like Disneyland—where you can easily spend thousands in just a few days."

Part One.

Layoffs and corporate shake-ups seem to be the norm these days, and Benedikt Oehmen has lived through it. After 17 years at Blizzard, known for its iconic gaming creations, he faced the unexpected reality of layoffs. While his time with Blizzard was largely rewarding, the ending was a difficult transition. Today, Benedikt is using his experience to support others in similar situations, sharing practical advice and his “Big Three” strategies from his book to help people overcome setbacks and thrive again.

Key Highlights of Our Interview:

From Physicist to Gamer at Blizzard

From 17 Years of Loyalty to Facing Layoffs: When Blizzard Prioritized Profit Over People

“I started with Blizzard in 2005, and by 2018, after 13 years, the focus had shifted from creating epic experiences for gamers to just making more money.”

Breaking Free from the Corporate Overlord: Coaching Passionate Geeks on Their Own Terms

“Bound to a corporate overlord who tells me what to do and where my priorities are. And all my efforts basically go towards making rich people even richer in a sense."

From Panic to Possibility: How to Flip Career Transitions into Exciting New Opportunities

Learning in Disguise: How the “Big Three” Turns Mistakes into Milestones

“Being kind to me is all about self-acceptance, embracing the good things in our life and not looking at what we think we are missing.”

In this first episode of a two-part series, Mary Shea, General Manager of Hire Quotient and former co-CEO of Mediafly, shares her remarkable journey from classical musician to sales leader and diversity advocate.

Mary reflects on the pivotal moments that shaped her career, including the risks she’s taken and the transformative lessons learned. As a proud member of the LGBTQ community, she discusses her mission to amplify underrepresented voices and drive equity in sales leadership.

Drawing from her time as Principal Analyst at Forrester, Mary provides valuable insights into the digitization of sales and the role of creativity in building high-performing teams. Packed with passion, advocacy, and actionable advice, this episode sets the stage for an inspiring conclusion in Part Two.

Key Highlights of Our Interview:

From Music to Business

“I started as a classical musician, playing with the Mexico City Philharmonic and Guadalajara Symphony. But when the career palette felt too small, I took a leap into business, changing my life forever.”

Sales: The Great Equalizer

“Sales is one of the few fields where hard work and skill can lead to financial independence, regardless of where you start. That independence allows you to make meaningful changes in your life and others’.”

Playing Catch-Up with Purpose

“Coming into the business world with a PhD put me 10 years behind my peers, but it also ignited a fire. I moved quickly, knowing every opportunity was critical to closing that gap.”

Creating the Playbook

“I’m not just about managing to a playbook—I love creating it. The intellectual stimulation of building strategies with teams and seeing them succeed is what drives me.”

In the second episode of this two-part series, Mary Shea, General Manager of Hire Quotient and former co-CEO of Mediafly, delves into the co-CEOship model—a rising approach in today’s complex business landscape.

With growing challenges for single leaders, she explains how trust, complementary skills, and shared vision are essential for success. Mary candidly discusses the model’s benefits, like shared workload and greater impact, alongside challenges like slower decision-making. She also highlights the importance of open communication, board oversight, and coaching as “umpires” to navigate conflicts. This episode offers timely insights for leaders exploring innovative ways to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Key Highlights of Our Interview:

AI’s Impact on Sales Teams

“AI is paving the way for smaller, more agile sales teams, moving away from the traditional 80/20 rule toward a future where 80% of the team delivers 100% of the revenue.”

The Rise of the Consultant Seller

“AI acts as a coach on the salesperson’s shoulder, helping them become more advisory-oriented, and enabling deeper impact in customer interactions.”

Why Two CEOs?

“In today’s complex world, no single leader can address everything, from geopolitical challenges to the rapid pace of AI innovation. The co-CEO model allows for a divide-and-conquer approach.”

Challenges of Co-Leadership

“Decision-making can be slower, and sometimes we wish we could just do things our way. But alignment is key, and when it works, it’s incredibly impactful.”

Who’s the Umpire?

“Our ‘umpire’ is our investor and board. If we truly can’t resolve a disagreement, we rely on their input as the ultimate decision-maker.”

The Professional Marriage

“Co-CEOship is like a professional marriage—it requires resilience, commitment, and sometimes even a ‘marriage counselor’ in the form of an executive coach to navigate tough patches.”

In this first episode of a two-part series, James Hilovsky takes us from the baseball field to the world of franchising, sharing how athletes possess unique qualities that make them exceptional business owners.

Having transitioned from professional sports to a successful career in the restaurant and franchise industries, James highlights the parallels between following a coach’s playbook and executing a franchise system. With a focus on risk-taking, leadership, and embracing coaching, James explains how athletes are naturally equipped to thrive in franchising. He also shares his passion for guiding athletes and professionals through the franchising process, helping them avoid pitfalls and find opportunities that align with their goals.

Whether you’re an athlete or just looking to take the leap into business, this episode offers valuable insights to inspire your journey.

Key Highlights of Our Interview:

From Baseball to Business

“My baseball career was short-lived due to injury, but transitioning to the restaurant industry felt natural. It was another kind of team—working together toward a shared goal.”

Systems That Lead to Success

“Franchises, like sports leagues, refine their systems to avoid pitfalls. They hand franchisees a proven playbook to help them stay on course and achieve their goals.”

Athletes and Franchising: A Natural Fit

“Athletes already understand the value of following systems and being part of a team. That mindset translates seamlessly into running a successful franchise.”

From Coach to Franchisor

“In the franchise world, the franchisor acts like a head coach—laying out the strategies, providing guidance, and ensuring the business operates at peak performance.”

In this second episode of the two-part series, James Hilovsky delves deeper into the mindset and qualities required for success in franchising.

Drawing on his extensive experience, James highlights the flip side of athletic traits—how passion and ego can sometimes derail franchisees, but how the right systems and guidance can bring them back on track. He shares insights into why franchising isn’t just about following a playbook but also about owning your business and betting on yourself.

For corporate professionals and non-athletes, James emphasizes the importance of overcoming fear, finding the right franchise fit, and partnering with a supportive franchisor. Packed with actionable advice, this episode is a must-listen for anyone ready to take the leap into franchising and build something truly their own.

Key Highlights of Our Interview:

When Ego Enters the Game

“For highly successful athletes, ego can become a stumbling block. In their circle, they’re often surrounded by ‘yes’ people—but in franchising, the system is the boss.”

Coachable or Combative?

“Not every athlete thrives in a franchise model. If they’re resistant to coaching or feel they don’t need the franchise system, they might be better suited for entrepreneurship.”

From Control to Chaos

“Athletes transition from highly controlled environments to the unpredictable world of business. Education and mindset shifts are crucial to navigate these new challenges.”

The Athlete’s Advantage: Resilience

“Athletes are no strangers to failure. In baseball, hitting .300 is a win—despite failing seven out of ten times. That resilience becomes a powerful tool in business.”

The Franchisor as a Partner

“Your franchisor should be more than a brand—they’re your business partner. Look for one that offers strong support and aligns with your vision for success.”

Part Two.

Ever left a toxic boss or workplace, hoping for a fresh start, only to land in the same chaos at your new job? It’s a frustratingly common cycle.

The truth is, office politics are everywhere. From power plays and subtle maneuvers to that colleague who always seems to win, navigating workplace dynamics can be exhausting.

In this two-part series, leadership expert Jennifer Selby Long joins me to unpack why office politics happen, how some people thrive in politically charged environments, and why others struggle. We’ll explore toxic cultures, power dynamics, and the hidden forces shaping your work life—and how to navigate them without losing yourself along the way.

Feeling stuck or burned out? These episodes are packed with relatable stories and actionable insights to help you take your next step forward.

Key Highlights of Our Interview:

Talent vs. Tactics: Why Performance Alone Doesn’t Guarantee Success

“In corporate environments, it’s often not the most skilled or hardworking employees who thrive—it’s those adept at navigating office politics. Top performers may drive results, but their brilliance can threaten insecure leaders, creating a system where political tact outshines true talent.”

The Right Culture for the Right Person

“Some thrive in competitive political environments; others find them draining. The key is identifying whether your personal interests align with the culture around you. The fit matters more than fighting a system that may not suit you.”

No Permanent Friends, No Permanent Enemies—Just Interests

“Drawing from the wisdom of Martin Luther King’s attorney, Clarence Jones: the game of politics is about aligning interests, not forging everlasting alliances. Understanding this can shift how you approach your workplace dynamics.”

Burnout and Disengagement: The Fallout of Neglecting Talent

“When talent is neither respected nor recognized, it creates a workplace rife with disengagement and burnout. Organizations lose not just individuals but the potential for meaningful progress, leaving behind a culture where playing the game matters more than delivering value.”

Would you ever consider leaving a secure and high-ranking position as a CFO at IBM Europe to join a startup in Connecticut as merely the 16th employee?

Josh Geballe, took that exact leap, moving away from the corporate security he knew to embrace the thrills and challenges of a startup, guided by what he describes as his "gut feeling.”

A former campaign manager for the US Representative Rosa DeLauro, New Haven-based Josh has crafted a 30-year progressive journey centered on two main themes: impact and challenge.

Previously, he served as Vice President of Finance, Global Technology Services at IBM Europe, CEO of Core Informatics, Vice President and General Manager at Thermo Fisher Scientific, Chairman of the Board at CT Paid Leave, COO at the Office of the Governor in the State of Connecticut, and the Commissioner at the Connecticut Department of Administrative Services.

As the COO during Connecticut’s COVID-19 health response, Josh faced a public health crisis of unprecedented scale, the likes of which no MBA curriculum could ever anticipate or equip its students to handle. (press conf link).

Currently, Josh is the Managing Director at Yale Ventures, Senior Associate Provost for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Yale University, Member of Boards at ClimateHaven, Connecticut Innovations, BioCT, AdvanceCT, and Guilford Savings Bank.

Part Two.

I used to work in LA for TCW Asset Management, where I managed billion-dollar funds for institutions alongside the Bond King, Jeffrey Gundlach, focusing on bond and credit portfolios. Today, I’m meeting someone else from LA, but with a different angle on investment—precious metals like gold and silver. Our guest, Collin Plume, is here to talk about something often overlooked and undervalued.

But don’t worry—this isn’t a sales pitch on buying gold or silver.

Collin and I will dive into more personal topics: family, parenting, retirement, and the sense of control over personal finance, as well as financial education for future generations. So if you have kids, care about your financial future, are looking after elderly family members, or are simply concerned about financial and family planning in general, join us and get inspired by Collin’s journey in building wealth from scratch.

This is part 2 of our 2-part series on Collin and his golden rules of people-focused finance.
