Injury and illness happen to everyone, particularly athletes who train consistently, year after year. How can you make the most of the time needed to heal -- both physically and emotionally? Sign up for your free consultation on health, leadership and life coaching with Kelly or Maria at ChampionsMojo.com/cm-coaching.

Techniques for Healing

  1. Set aside time, on your calendar, for healing (both physical and mental).
  2. Take the rest you need to ensure the injury or illness is truly healed.
  3. Learn and educate yourself about your illness or injury.
  4. Show yourself self-compassion and listen to yourself and your body.
  5. Move in whatever way you can in that moment.
  6. Create a “while I’m injured” goal -- work towards something that is possible to do or accomplish while you are recovering.
  7. Visualize your peak performance, over and over, and write your future headlines.
  8. Sleep well, fuel yourself well, limit negativity on social media and other sources.
  9. Remember the process is not linear; healing happens in a zigzag fashion.

Use Emotion To Perform Your Best, Episode 201

Champion's Mojo for Masters Swimmers

play

04/04/23 • 15 min

This episode is about the impact of emotions on athletic performance and how using the most powerful positive emotions can make you perform your best! Kelly and Maria agree that an athlete's (or any kind of performer's) emotions before an event, can impact their results in a big way.
Positive emotions such as love, gratitude, and compassion produce oxytocin and norepinephrine, which make us feel good and powerful, while negative emotions such as fear, guilt, and shame produce cortisol and make us feel down and negative.
You'll also hear about the idea of using positive emotions to enhance performance, such as the idea of thinking of 10 positive emotions to evoke before a race to uplift you. And learn tips for getting rid of negative thoughts.
Here are topics in the show:

  1. Posture, facial expressions, and body language can predict who will win a race as Kelly observed at 2023 Women's NCAA Swimming Championships.
  2. Positive emotions like love, gratitude, and compassion can produce oxytocin and norepinephrine and enhance performance.
  3. Negative emotions like fear, guilt, and shame can produce cortisol and reduce performance.
  4. Episode #200 references the interview with top-notch masters coach Mark Kutz who says you better love swimming and working out.
  5. The idea is based on Biologist Bruce Lipton's work from his book The Biology of Belief and the global Human Affectome Project which studies emotions and performance.
  6. Experts believes that what's in your mind impacts your performance.
  7. Maria can tell how a workout will be based on how she feels before it.
  8. Fear can be useful to amp you up, but being overly fearful can hurt performance.
  9. Changing negative thoughts to positive ones can change your whole day. Try fake it until you make it.
  10. Having a history of success can make competition fun, but a series of poor performances requires changing your thoughts to perform better.

How to Motivate Yourself to Move, EP 12

Champion's Mojo for Masters Swimmers

play

05/20/19 • 40 min

This week’s episode is all about the importance of getting out there and moving and how to incorporate movement into everyday life for better health, improved cognition and elevated mood. Kelly and Maria discuss how important moving is and the difference between movement and exercise. You'll hear Kelly's amazing story of running out of New York City on September 11, 2001 and how Maria got her start as an adult athlete.

More information on movement

Americans simply do not move enough. In total, Americans are sitting an average of 13 hours per day, according to a survey from Research Now, prompting experts to declare that “sitting is the new smoking.” Not everyone has the desire to get out and exercise, but everyone should be prioritizing movement in their daily routines.

More information on the dangers of sitting:

https://www.cnn.com/2017/09/11/health/sitting-increases-risk-of-death-study/index.html

Action Items from the Hosts

Kelly: Buy an Air Desk / Floating Desk to use with a recumbent bike and move your legs while working on a computer, laptop or phone. If you don’t want to spend the money for the setup, find a countertop that is bar height or stack some books on a desk or table until you can stand to work at your screen.

Maria: Set a timer for 45 minutes and when that ends, get up and do something physical either outside, or right there in your home or office. Reset the timer when you are done. The timer is a reminder to get up and move.

Quote of the Week: "Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV, and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death." -- James Levine, a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic
