09/17/24 • 37 min
Nashville-based musician Nick Hickman epitomizes the dedication and artistry required to leave an indelible mark on country music. Originating from Harriman TN, Nick embarked on his journey to Nashville in 2016, driven by his passion for songwriting and performance. Since then, he has graced the stage alongside notable influences such as Blake Shelton, Lee Brice, Jason Aldean, and more, solidifying his reputation for electrifying performances and engaging with audiences. His talent has garnered praise from venue owners and talent bookers, who commend his stage presence and musical prowess.
Nick Hickman's energy and heartfelt songwriting have resonated with his audience, earning him recognition in esteemed competitions including Nash Next. He secured a Top 20 placement in a highly competitive field, a testament to his talent and hard work. Radio programmers have praised his work and compared his talent to established headliners. His debut single "Rain" from the 2016 EP Tailgate Dancefloor significantly impacted the Music Row Breakout chart, a notable achievement for a newcomer. His subsequent releases, including the EP “Let Em Speak” and singles like "Tipsy" and "Live For Tonight (featuring singer Amber Hayes)," have further solidified his position in the industry, with “Live For Tonight” earning placement on the Billboard indicator chart—a remarkable feat without major label support.
Refusing to settle for mediocrity, Nick invests considerable time honing his craft in the writing room, studio, and on stage. He remains true to himself, embracing authenticity and transparency in his artistry—a quality that resonates deeply with his growing fan base. His EP, Feels Like Home, is a testament to his unwavering dedication and creativity, showcasing his artistic evolution. In 2023 Nick released his first full-length album, Junior Year, which culminates Nick's musical evolution and personal growth, reflecting on his experiences and showcasing Nick's versatility as a songwriter and performer.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Nick seized the opportunity to establish his record label, Whiskey Neat Records, and construct a personal studio. With each release, Nick strives to elevate his music, delivering tracks ranging from introspective to upbeat, infused with his signature humor and charm. As he looks toward the future, Nick Hickman's trajectory promises even greater success, fueled by his relentless passion and commitment to his craft.

#327 - The Journey Home Project
Business Side of Music
07/30/24 • 36 min
It is a significant milestone for the Charlie Daniels Patriot Awards Dinner, which will be held on September 11, 2024, at City Winery Nashville. The awards dinner is a program of The Charlie Daniels Journey Home Project, a 501c3 that supports military veterans, first responders and their families. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the program, co-founded by Country Music legend, Charlie Daniels with his longtime manager, David Corlew. Although Daniels passed in 2020, his musical legacy lives on, and his devotion to veterans causes continues through the dedication of Corlew. Through fundraising events, the organization supports the efforts of other not-for-profit organizations providing services to U.S. veterans and first responders; selected for providing the most meaningful work with the lowest overhead. TCHJHP has raised more than $4 million for these organizations.
Corlew shares his story of how he got into the business, first working at a record store, then becoming a roadie for Charlie Daniels, before becoming his manager for the next 30+ years of Charlie’s career.

#308 - Where in The Song is The Moment?
Business Side of Music
03/12/24 • 44 min
You crafted your songs. You've put your heart and soul into them, but when you're on stage, the response from the audience is lackluster at best. Is it the material you're performing. In many cases, while the songs are excellent, the presentation is not. Where in the song is the moment on stage that defines who you are? This is where Tom Jackson Productions steps in.
As a trained Live Music Producer for Tom Jackson Productions, Amy Wolter offers her years of personal experience onstage, along with a multi-layered musical background, to help artists engage their audiences by creating compelling, memorable live shows.
Amy has helped hundreds of artists of all genres, prep for major headline and opening act tour slots, and showcases for labels, and spoken at Artist Workshops around the country. A few of her clients include Grammy award winners The Band Perry & Lacrae, CMA and ACM –winning country acts Gloriana and Thompson Square, Riser House country artist Dillon Carmichael, Capitol Christian’s breakout artist Anne Wilson, contestants for The Voice & American Idol, Dove award winners Francesca Battistelli & Sidewalk Prophets, as well as top Canadian artists & Canadian Country Music Association winners High Valley, Jess Moskaluke & Chad Brownlee.
Amy works with artists at all levels, empowering them to have confidence and authority onstage. "I've learned by a lot from being onstage myself, and know the importance of connecting with an audience. If a crowd doesn't enjoy watching you, or have an ‘experience’ at your show, then what's the point of them seeing you live?" says Amy. "The ideas and tools in Tom Jackson’s Live Music Method are absolutely career-changing when an artist understands the power of a great live performance!”

#305 - Night Train To Nashville
Business Side of Music
02/20/24 • 51 min
What started out as a project in a screenwriting class in a writers boot camp, has turned into a novel describing how Nashville, also known as “Music City” evolved into what it is today... or not. Nashville Tennessee is well known for its Country music, but did you know that the birthplace of Rhythm and Blues, or what we these days call “R&B” actually was born in this Middle Tennessee City we call Nashville.
The moniker “Music City” was actually derived from the1860’s after the Civil War, when the Jubilee Singers from Nashville’s Fisk University performed in front of England’s Queen Victoria, preceding Country music by approximately 80 years or so.
In the studio today, we chat with author Paula Blackman about the “night music” that took place in Nashville in the midst of segregation in the 40’s, 50’s and early 60’s, how the legendary Nashville TN based WLAC Radio had the ability to broadcast across the Eastern United States, and how this worked out in the favor of introducing R&B Music to the World.
A retired gemologist, Paula Hope Blackman turned her lifelong storytelling hobby into a second career, becoming an author, screenwriter and playwright. She is a sixth generation native of Tennessee, who divides her time between Nashville and Southwest Florida, where she lives with her husband, Michael Iacampo.

#304 - The Disruptors
Business Side of Music
02/13/24 • 49 min
dis·rup·tion (noun)
Definition: "A radical change to an existing industry or market due to technological innovation."
According to our guest Jack Sharkey, who is with KEF Audio, music and the culture at large needs disruption to keep it fresh and engaging. The digital revolution and the chokehold the “industry” has on art has made it nearly impossible for the next generation of disruptors to be heard.
There is plenty of good music being made today and we shouldn't always subscribe to the philosophy that music was better back in the day so to speak. Music is music, and it will always touch those who wish to be touched by it. The difference today is the folks who control the money aren’t willing to upset the apple cart by taking a chance on something that hasn’t been tried before.
Who are the disruptors of music today? When can we anticipate the next Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, or The Beatles, all who turned the music and cultural scene upside down?
On this very special edition of The Business Side of Music, we share the microphone with Jack Sharkey, who in addition to being a technical advisor for KEF, is also a Blog writer, and the host of the "Between The Notes" podcast show.

#310 - Making It Big One Gig At A Time
Business Side of Music
04/04/24 • 34 min
Stone Senate has been called “a heavier version of Lynyrd Skynyrd, crossed with The Allman Brothers Band”. While being mentioned in such heady company is flattering, it is important to note Stone Senate is most definitely not a retro act. They are taking what came naturally from their collective influences a step further and making a name for themselves in the world of modern country rock.
The band is fronted by vocalist/ guitarist Clint Woolsey’s smoldering, soulful vocals and unmistakable stage presence. Meanwhile stage left and stage right are burning down with dual lead guitars/vocals of James Beau Edwards and Brother Ted Hennington. Add to that the bonded rhythm section of Kieran Cronley on bass and David “DZ” Zettler on drums/ vocals, and you have caught lightning in a bottle.
Stone Senate has toured with Bulletboys, Uli Jon Roth, Davisson Brothers Band, and Tantric, and direct support for bands such as Styx, Collective Soul, Jackyl, Cowboy Mouth, Saliva, Little Texas, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Quiet Riot, Asleep at the Wheel, Lit, Alien Ant Farm, Tom Kiefer Band, Billy Gibbons and the BFG’s, Tim Montana, Uncle Kracker, Rehab, David Alan Coe, Whitford – St Holmes, David Lee Murphy, Andy Ross, Mike Zito, John Micheal Montgomery, Eddie Montgomery, and Confederate Railroad to name a few.

#313 - The Anatomy of The Song
Business Side of Music
04/23/24 • 64 min
Meet Dave Lenahan. He started out in the music business by being a DJ at WKSU radio on the campus of Kent State University, doing afternoon drive time jazz. He went on to work at Country Station WUBE in Cincinnati OH, but in short order he determined that he was destined to become a hit songwriter. We discuss the anatomy of the song, how to put one together, and what separates a tune from a hit.
Dave currently resides in Nashville TN, writes songs for a living, and hosts the podcast “Songwriter Connection” which has released more than 150 episodes on the exploration of songwriting.
Also joining us in the studio is award winning record producer Steve Creech as our special guest co-host.

#322 - The Efficient Hustle
Business Side of Music
06/25/24 • 51 min
The audience is in their seats. The lights dim, and the artist takes the stage. For the next 90 minutes or more, the show goes on without a hitch. But in order to get there, production for the show began to take shape, weeks, if not months earlier. But how does this happen, and who’s in charge? Enter the Production Manager. This individual is in charge of everything from ensuring that the stage, sound, and lights are set up properly for the concert, to the numerous emails and phone calls to guarantee that there are no problems (or mistakes). In many ways, managing a tour is similar to running a business. There are employees and budgets to look after. The workload and responsibilities are extraordinary. And the demands can be overwhelming. Without efficient work practices in place, the stress and lack of sleep make it impossible to thrive in the world of tour and production management.
Production Manager and author of the book “The Efficient Hustle”, Lucas Meek shares stories from the road, explaining the inner workings of the touring business, what it takes to be a successful Production or Tour Manager, and everything needed to ensure that the show goes on without a hitch.

#300 - Our 300th Episode!
Business Side of Music
01/16/24 • 63 min
We can’t believe it's been six years in the making to get to this moment, and we wanted to do something special... or at least different. For the first time ever, the host of the show, Bob Bender, becomes the guest! After all this time, we find out what makes Bob tick, how (and why) he got into the music business, and the reason he stuck with it for 50 plus years. He also shares some of the inner workings of the music business, including its sometimes not so nice side of the industry, along with the perils and pitfalls he faced along the way. Hosting the show is Bob’s good friend, Joe Hand, who takes the helm, and asks the hard questions. There’s even a nice little surprise at the end of the show that pretty much left Bob speechless (almost).
Joe Hand is a lifelong musician, producer, recording artist, and writer. A graduate of Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Joe has been making music for over 35 years, both on stage, and in studios all over the world. He’s worked with such diverse artists as Linkin’ Park to John Michael Talbot.
