Episode 69: Nick Lavery, Author of Objective Secure
02/19/22 • 84 min
This week we welcome Nick Lavery, author of Objective Secure. Nick is an active duty member of The United States Army Special Forces. In 2013, he and his Detachment fell victim to an insider attack ultimately resulting in the loss of his leg. Following a year of surgeries and initial recovery including the use of a prosthetic at Walter Reed National Medical Military Center, he returned to Fort Bragg. Nick talks about the drive and focus on returning not only to his unit, but ultimately his combat team. In 2015, at the conclusion of a challenging, comprehensive assessment designed to evaluate Nick's abilities to operate, he realized that goal and was subsequently deployed once again to Afghanistan conducting full spectrum combat operations. The unlikely road from Afghanistan to Walter Reed, to Fort Bragg and finally returning to Afghanistan, is the foundation of Nick's Objective Secure philosophy and ethos. Nick discusses how that philosophy was transformed into a book that provides readers with the tools necessary to achieve any goal no matter how far-fetched, unlikely, or impractical it may seem. So no matter the road blocks that you see in front of you, this is the episode that will propel you to success. Strap yourself in and get ready for a shot of adrenaline with this week's episode.

Episode 70: Maria McKinney, Air Force and OIF Veteran
This week we welcome Maria McKinney, Air Force and Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran. Maria is an OG Bulletproof Badass, who in 2004 was part of a group of Air Force mechanics and vehicle operators that would set a trend for years to come. Not since the Vietnam War had Airmen augmented Army personnel in a war zone. That all changed when the 31st Logistics Readiness Squadron was tasked with providing 10 vehicle mechanics to support Army convoy operations in Iraq. Maria blazed the trail for Airmen, participating in first of its kind training, setting up protocols that would be followed by future deployments, and bolstering inter-service cooperation that would later become the norm. We talk about what it was like being a female in a combat zone, shouldering the burden of ensuring your fellow service members were safe during convoy operations. Maria also gives an honest assessment of the care provided to military members returning to their garrison units. Most importantly, Maria demonstrates the pride of serving her country and the principle of "Service Before Self". So cook up some Sunday dinner, because this week everyone is family!
