Episode 79: Maj. Fred Galvin (Ret.), Author of A Few Bad Men
Bulletproof Veteran Podcast
07/21/22 • 67 min
This week we welcome Maj. Fred Galvin (Ret.), Marine Officer and author of A Few Bad Men. A Few Bad Men tells the story of Fox Company, a Marine unit ambushed in Afghanistan and betrayed by their own leaders—these elite Marines fought for their lives again, back home. A cross between A Few Good Men and American Sniper, this is the true story of an elite Marine special operations unit bombed by an IED and shot at during an Afghanistan ambush. The Marine Commandos were falsely accused of gunning down innocent Afghan civilians following the ambush. The unit’s leader, Maj. Fred Galvin, was summarily relieved of duty and his unit was booted from the combat zone. They were condemned by everyone, from the Afghan president to American generals. When Fox Company returned to America, Galvin and his captain were the targets of the first Court of Inquiry in the Marines in fifty years. Maj. Galvin demonstrated what it means to be a real leader, and fought for the lives and reputations of his Marines. Strap yourself in for a story fit for Hollywood, but lived by Maj. Galvin and the men of Fox Company.

Episode 88: Dale Jenkins, Author of Diplomats and Admirals
Bulletproof Veteran Podcast
11/07/22 • 56 min
This week we welcome Dale Jenkins, Author of DIPLOMATS AND ADMIRALS: From Failed Negotiations and Tragic Misjudgments to Powerful Leaders and Historic Deeds, the Untold Story of the U.S. Navy’s Victories at Coral sea and Midway. Diplomats and Admirals argues that the war in the Pacific was the result of internal divisions in both the United States and Japan, and possible duplicity within the Roosevelt administration. After continued Japanese expansion in the Pacific in 1941 and the total oil embargo imposed by Dean Acheson, the threat of war escalated. Japanese Prime Minister Konoe realized war with the United States would be disastrous for Japan. He made strenuous attempts to arrange a summit meeting with President Roosevelt but was continually rebuffed by Secretary of State Cordell Hull and his pro-China advisors Stanley Hornbeck and Alger Hiss. Roosevelt’s War Council, oblivious to the power of the Japanese Navy, believed the oil embargo would force Japan to withdraw from southern Indo-China. An agreement with Japan was within reach at the end of November 1941, but Chiang Kai-Shek and Madame Chiang exerted powerful lobbying pressure to prevent an agreement – they wanted the United States in the war to aid China. In response, Hull delivered a demanding diplomatic note, known forever as the Hull Note of November 26, which the Japanese viewed as an ultimatum. The result was Pearl Harbor. Diplomats and Admirals' penetrating historical descriptions and insights before and during WWII and across continents and oceans, culminates at the Battle of Midway, where U.S. Navy carrier pilots snatched victory from defeat in the last possible moments– a decisive victory that stopped further Japanese expansion and turned the momentum of the Pacific War from Japan to the United States. We discuss the parallels between that time, and our current geo-political climate, specifically Russia and China. Dale analyzes why if we do not learn from history we are doomed to repeat it. The greatest generation is front and center in this week's interview.

Backpacks For Life’s mission is to provide a unique and personalized support system for homeless and at-risk veterans who are struggling to reintegrate into civilian life. Through their two main programs, backpack distribution and coaching/mentoring, they are able to effectively support and empower veterans, reigniting the flame to live and succeed inside of them. This, coupled with their mentoring and outreach, creates a network that provides veterans with the tools they need to change their lives. Alexa also discusses their innovative and one of a kind veteran portal, ROGER. Joshua Hood is the author of The Guardian (Blackstone Publishing, 2023), Treadstone Rendition, Treadstone Transgression, The Treadstone Exile, The Treadstone Resurrection, Warning Order, Clear by Fire, and most recently Burn Out. Josh decided to follow his brother into the military and joined the army after graduating with an English degree from the University of Memphis. He spent five years in the 82nd Airborne Division, becoming a team leader in the 3-504 Parachute Infantry Regiment in Iraq from 2005-2006 where he conducted combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. From 2007-2008, Hood served as a squad leader with the 1-508th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Afghanistan where he put more Foot-to-Taliban-Ass and was decorated for valor in Operation Furious Pursuit. On his return to civilian life, he was a sniper team leader on a full-time SWAT team in Memphis, TN, where he was awarded the lifesaving medal for saving the life of a civilian with quick, creative, and resourceful instincts.
Burn Out is the story of former convict Jake Slade turned US Forest Service Smokejumper—highly-trained, experienced firefighters who provide leadership for quick wildland fires in remote areas. While he's ready for any of nature’s toughest battles while parachuting into raging fires, he wasn’t prepared for any manmade battles—especially one including his old friend, confidential informant agent Mikey Boone. Boone, who was almost killed by a cartel he plans to testify against, calls Slade for help while on the run. Unable to refuse an offer that promises his prison time to be expunged from his record, Slade complies, hoping to end the demons of his past. But what begins as a straightforward search and rescue mission swiftly becomes a harrowing run for his own life.
We discuss the writing process from start to finish, what it takes to get your manuscript in front of a publisher, and how structuring fiction is important to telling a realistic story. Joshua talks about his experience as a veteran author, and we even geek-out with some Star Wars talk! So if your not afraid to hold your mind to the fire...this is the episode for you.

This week we welcome Nick Lavery, author of Objective Secure. Nick is an active duty member of The United States Army Special Forces. In 2013, he and his Detachment fell victim to an insider attack ultimately resulting in the loss of his leg. Following a year of surgeries and initial recovery including the use of a prosthetic at Walter Reed National Medical Military Center, he returned to Fort Bragg. The unlikely road from Afghanistan to Walter Reed, to Fort Bragg and finally returning to Afghanistan, is the foundation of Nick's Objective Secure philosophy and ethos. Nick discusses how that philosophy was transformed into a book that provides readers with the tools necessary to achieve any goal no matter how far-fetched, unlikely, or impractical it may seem.
