British Murders with Stuart Blues - S04E10 - James Patterson Smith (The Murder of Kelly-Anne Bates)
play

12/09/21 • 24 min

In the tenth and final episode of British Murders Season 4, I tell the story of James Patterson Smith and Kelly-Anne Bates.⁣⁣⁣

On April 16, 1996, middle-aged James Smith drowned his 17-year-old girlfriend, Kelly-Anne, in the bath.⁣

Kelly-Anne had been brutally tortured by James for around 4 weeks prior to being murdered.⁣

Detective Sergeant Joseph Monaghan said he has never seen a case as horrific as this in his 15 years on the police force.⁣

James Smith was handed a life sentence on November 19, 1997, with a minimum term to serve of 20 years.⁣

This is one of the most brutal cases I’ve ever researched, so prepare yourself before listening.

In the fourth volume of Killer British Murder Stories, I am told the story of Mark Twitchell by Bobbie Holmes of Killer Stories Podcast.

Twitchell was convicted of first-degree murder on April 12, 2011, for the murder of Johnny Altinger.

He was handed a life sentence with a minimum term to serve of 25 years.

This case is notorious because Twitchell claims to have been inspired by fictional serial killer Dexter Morgan, the protagonist of the 'Dexter' book series and TV show.

This is the second of two collaboration episodes Bobbie and I recently recorded. To hear me tell the story of Penelope Jackson, check out Killer Stories.

In the debut episode of British Murders, I tell the story of Peter Bryan.

Peter murdered 21-year-old Nisha Sheth with a hammer in 1993 and was subsequently sent to Rampton Secure Hospital.

He was transferred to an open psychiatric ward in January 2004 before murdering Brian Cherry a month later on February 17.

Remanded to Broadmoor, Peter murdered fellow patient Richard Loudwell on April 25, 2004.

The confessed cannibal remains in Broadmoor to this day, and it is improbable that he will ever be released.

In the first episode of British Murders Season 5, I tell the tragic story of the ‘Babes in the Wood’ murders.⁣

On October 9, 1986, a 20-year-old man named Russell Bishop sexually assaulted and strangled two 9-year-old girls named Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway.⁣

He was arrested, taken to trial and acquitted in 1987.⁣

In 1990, Bishop went on to sexually assault a 7-year-old girl, leaving her for dead.⁣

This time, the girl survived, and Bishop was handed a life sentence with a minimum term to serve of 14 years.⁣

Due to advances in technology and the passing of the Criminal Justice Act 2003, Bishop was retaken to trial in 2018 and found guilty of the murders of Nicola and Karen.⁣

He was handed two life sentences with a minimum term to serve of 36 years.⁣

In this very special bonus episode of British Murders, I am joined by John from the 'Reddit On Wiki' podcast and my lifelong friend Dav as we discuss the double-murder suicide case of former WWE wrestler Chris Benoit.⁣

Over a three-day period from June 22 to 24, 2007, the former two-time world champion killed his wife Nancy Benoit and their 7-year-old son, Daniel, before finally hanging himself.⁣

Benoit was booked to become ECW Champion at WWE’s Vengeance: Night of Champions pay-per-view on Sunday, June 24, 2007, but he no-showed the event.⁣

On Monday, June 25, 2007, WWE cancelled their scheduled three-hour-long live Raw TV show and replaced it with a tribute to Chris Benoit's life and career.⁣

On Tuesday, June 26, 2007, after details of the murder-suicide became available, the company aired a recorded statement before its ECW broadcast advising that Benoit’s name would not be mentioned again.⁣

Except for his results and listings in WWE's title history, the WWE website has removed all past mentions of Benoit, including his biography and the video tribute comments made by his fellow wrestlers.⁣

British Murders with Stuart Blues - S17E09 | Jason Comerford (Ancoats, Greater Manchester, 1994)
play

04/30/25 • 25 min

In February 1994, a night out in Manchester ended in tragedy when 21-year-old Jason Comerford was fatally stabbed as he made his way home.

Despite hundreds of witness interviews, a Crimewatch appeal and a major investigation, the case went cold - and Jason’s family were left without answers for decades.

It would take breakthroughs in forensic science, the dogged persistence of detectives and an extraordinary battle against the justice system itself before Jason’s killer was finally unmasked. But by the time the truth came out, it was too late for those who had fought hardest to see justice done.
