This week, Ryan sits down with award-winning singer-songwriter James Lee Baker. James talks to Ryan about the interesting way he created his two most recent recording projects. For his 2017 album "Home Again", he was able to recruit musicians from all over the world (and on a modest budget) by using the website Fiverr. And for his most recent project, James will be going into the Leesta Vall Recording Studios in March to record single-copy versions of his songs in vinyl, and each record will even have a personalized message to each fan who pre-orders a one-of-kind record. Recruiting musicians on Fiverr and creating personalized single-copy recordings are innovative ways to make music in today's industry. Give this episode a listen to find out how you can do it too!Find out more about James' single-copy recording project by visiting https://leestavall.com/products/jamesleebaker. Hi Podcast Listeners! In the first segment, we discuss Ryan's recent Hypebot book excerpt about the nastiness of record deal recoupment. In a nutshell, most record contracts involve artists having to pay back the money a label spends on making (and often promoting) the artist's album entirely out of the artist's royalties. Record deals are not investments by labels. They are loans, and artists are the unwitting debtors. In the second segment, musician and marketing expert Steve Palfreyman stops by to give tips on executing an effective music launch. He also gives information about his Music Launch Summit, a free platform with over 40 master classes from industry experts. It is available now and will be up until October 4th. Check it out at musiclaunchsummit.com and find out more about Steve's work by visiting stevepalfreyman.comIn the final segment, Ryan and Dave talk about Dave's cool metal vest, a sleep-away camp for adults devoted entirely to pizza, and an Ontario teacher who has been disciplined for allegedly having one of the foulest mouths of any educator that has ever existed.Thank you all very much for listening. Hi Podcast Listeners! Thanks for downloading. In the first segment, Dave makes it clear that he is obsessed with Rogue One (he has already seen it three times) and will try to take over this week's show with Star Wars talk every chance he gets. Along the way, Ryan and Dave answer a listener question about music launches and choosing a release date for your music. Then, R & D talk about the ongoing lawsuit between Avenged Sevenfold and their former label, Warner Bros.. The suit involves Avenged terminating their agreement with Warner in 2015 under a provision of California law that allows people to terminate personal services contracts longer than seven years (which many record deals often do). The big issue in the case will be how much Avenged will owe its label in damages for the final album under the Warner deal that was never made. Listeners of the Podcast need to follow this case carefully, as its eventual resolution will have massive implications on the power struggle between labels and artists in the New Music Industry In the second segment, vocal coach and music industry consultant Cari Cole stops. She gives tips on taking care of your singing voice and improving your signing technique. She also provides some generally excellent career advice along the way. Find out more about her consulting services and e-learning programs by visiting www.caricole.com.In the final segment, Dave goes nuts with Rogue One talk. He LOVES the movie and can't stop talking about it. The segment also features Star Wars-themed renditions of Dave's As Yet Untitled Game Show and Canada Town or Hoser Talk. Ryan gets frustrated.
