Bread and Rosaries - Ep.13 – Purity Culture (feat. Sarah M-H)
play

Official wife of the podcast, Sarah Molyneux-Hetherington, joins us for her second episode, this time helping us think through what purity culture looks like in the UK. If that doesn't do it for you, listen anyway as she and Ben finally spill the beans about what happened on their wedding night! There's a couple of slight changes in audio where we've had to stitch things together, including a segment recorded after Sarah went to bed which is why she doesn't talk about the economics of purity culture at all.

Content note: Between roughly 15 minutes and 17 minutes, and roughly 31 minutes and 33 minutes, Sarah talks briefly about sexual assault. Please do skip these segments if that's what's best for you. Sarah has asked us to assure our listeners that she is in a much better place than she describes previously being in during the episode.

Because the way our episodes are numbered aren't already stupid enough, we've added letters into the mix. We fired off some hot takes that got cut from last week's episode in order to keep the run time below an hour, but we didn't want to deprive the world of our nonsense, so here's a bonus episode. This is a very rough and ready cut, but we thought we'd throw it out with very minimal editing. We chat about some big names - NT Wright, Keir Starmer, Eugene Peterson - and we're actively rude about at least two of them.
Content note: Between roughly 25 minutes and 29 minutes of the podcast, we discuss sexual and spiritual abuse in detail. We then discuss the issue for the rest of the episode. Please do skip this segment if that's what's best for you.

When the echoes of history reverberate through today's headlines, understanding the past becomes essential to navigating the present. Ben Molyneux-Hetherington and Adam Spiers are joined by Dr. Peter Shambrook, author of 'Policy of Deceit: Britain and Palestine, 1914-1939', who helps us understand British manoeuvrings in Palestine prior to the establishment of the State of Israel.
Peter's book, 'Policy of Deceit' is available here.
The Balfour Project can be found here.

We also discuss Saint of the Week Henry Gunter, and his profound impact on the antiracism movement in Britain and British trade unionism.
You may have noticed that this episode is *very* late! We apologise for this! We are currently trialling new editing software and it's been a slog!

Ben is joined by Sarah to discuss some of the recent safeguarding news in the Church alongside her research into spiritual abuse. For a lighter topic, we discuss people dying in an exploding submarine.
Content warning - With the exception of the opening segment, almost the entirety of this episode deals with issues of abuse in the church. Whilst we don’t describe any acts of abuse in any detail, we do talk extensively about the nature and impact of spiritual abuse. Please do skip this episode if this isn’t something you feel able to deal with at this time.

Ben and Adam reflect on a year of faith leaders' moral failure in response to Israel's genocide of the Palestinian people as well as a much better response from liberation theologian, Sarojini Nadar. They also talk about Saint of the Week, St. John Chrysostom. That's right, an actual official saint for Saint of the Week! And what's up with sports journalists covering for athletes who have committed horrific crimes? Ben helps us think through some ongoing cases in Mingrapes.

This is part one of a conversation we were extremely lucky to have with Anthony Reddie, one of the foremost proponents of Black Liberation Theology in the UK. Anthony introduces us to some of the ideas of British Black Liberation Theology, and how it enabled him to remain Christian in the face of white supremacy. We also send our love and solidarity to the Stansted 15 and migrants currently detained in Napier Barracks.
Anthony tweets at @AnthonyGReddie and his website is www.anthonyreddie.com
This is a fantastic article by one of the Stansted 15: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/feb/02/stansted-15-quashed-conviction-terrorists-deportation-hostile-environment
