Our month of Christmas movies begins with this ambitious inspirational comedy about senior citizens gone wild. Simon and Emily Fairway are a devout Christian couple who live in a senior living facility in Florida. FAITH FILLED CHRISTMAS follows each of them individually as their paths branch off for separate days of fun. Simon hangs at home with his fellow retirees while his mischievous friend Byron secretly organizes a “Geezer Olympics” physical fitness competition unbeknownst to the facility’s strict headmistress. Meanwhile, Emily has a day out with her family, who happen to be an atypically structured and ethnically diverse group due to the Fairways’ participation in the foster system. It’s a cute combination of stories with genuinely wholesome themes such as diversity, respect, and care for the less fortunate. However, the film is not without its flaws. The character “Guru” is just an Indian guy stereotype played for laughs, which is a weird standout in this film that’s all about how people of different races can co-exist respectfully. Also, shallow criticisms of Islam, and a bizarre invocation of the tragic Orlando nightclub shooting of 2016 raise eyebrows during a scene where Christian teens are proselytizing on the beach. Still, we highly recommend this film if for no other reason than its climactic final scene of senior citizens partying hard to the song “That Junk is Crazy” by Christian EDM artist J-Dub.

Newsboys: Down Under the Big Top (1996) feat. Josh Martin
Boys' Bible Study
11/27/22 • 75 min
This straight-to-video oddity from the vast catalog of legendary Christian rock band Newsboys is a nostalgic favorite for fans of the group who love Newsboys’ classic mid-90s albums including “Going Public” and “Take Me to Your Leader”. DOWN UNDER THE BIG TOP is a comic fantasy film starring the band as the reluctant heirs of a dilapidated circus, faced with the difficult task of coming up with exciting acts and making “megacash” by bringing the show back to life. That’s as far as the plot really goes — most of the film is just an excuse to see your favorite Newsboys getting pies to the face or making Christian music industry in-jokes. CCM (contemporary Christian music) super-producer Steve Taylor, who directed this film, makes a cameo alongside other musical powerhouses such as prolific bassist Tommy Simms. The silly gags of DOWN UNDER THE BIG TOP aren’t without their dark undertones — lead vocalist John James was likely performing in this film while in the throes of his addiction issues that would cause him to leave the group the following year, although fortunately he has since recovered. Still, DOWN UNDER THE BIG TOP is a charmingly bizarre artifact of a time when CCM had a huge cultural impact, and Newsboys were the genre’s most beloved ambassadors. Returning as a guest to our show is our friend and resident CCM expert Josh Martin, a film curator behind Uncomfortable Brunch and Orlando Pop-Up Movie Services, who filled in our analysis of this film with his intricate knowledge of Newsboys lore.

Bibleman feat. Harleigh Ellsworth
Boys' Bible Study
11/13/22 • 77 min
We are finally covering one of the most beloved and well-known pieces of Christian children’s entertainment — BIBLEMAN — and we have a special guest to help us. Harleigh Ellsworth is not only the star of the 2001 BIBLEMAN episode “LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION”, but she is also the daughter of Willie Aames (who plays the titular BIBLEMAN in addition to writing, directing, and editing the original series) and Maylo McCaslin (who voices BIBLEMAN’s trusty computer U.N.I.C.E.) Harleigh tells us how the BIBLEMAN franchise was almost fully a family production, since her father Willie Aames was so hands on in all aspects of the show, including spending nearly 9 months per year touring as a part of the elaborate Bibleman live show that drew crowds of kids all over the United States. The episode we focus on today is truly a family affair, since mom, dad, and daughter all appear in the cast. In LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION (2001), Harleigh plays Riley, a newly converted Christian 12-year-old who is tempted to rejoin her old friend group, who are bad influences on her and would not be beneficial to her on her spiritual path. Parallel to this Christian moral quandary is a storyline about an evil, hypnotic website called www.HackEmUp.com that recurring BIBLEMAN villain Luxor Spawndroth uses to tempt insecure Christians and lead them back to their sinful past lives. Can BIBLEMAN and his hacker protege Cypher stop Riley from throwing her faith away? It was a pleasure to get such an intimate, inside look at the media we cover from someone who was there to see it all happen, so we can’t thank Harleigh enough for spending the time to share her family’s unique story with us. Also, shoutouts to our friend Dana for assisting us with the research for this.

Lindsay Lohan, Felicity Huffman, and Jane Fonda star as three generations of a dysfunctional Idaho family in GEORGIA RULE, a decidedly secular and genuinely bizarre film that uses Mormon social culture as a backdrop for a fish-out-of-water story where a troubled city girl named Rachel (portrayed by Lohan) is sent to live with her country grandmother for the summer. Rachel feels like an outsider in her new town, and her attempts at being extremely sexually forward with any of the men who are nice to her earns her an army of slut-shaming haters who watch her every move on binoculars, or following her with their cars. But this sexually precocious behavior from a seventeen-year-old character is clearly coming from a traumatized place. When Rachel confesses to the town veterinarian about her repeated childhood rapes by her stepfather, the vet dutifully informs Rachel’s family, but drama starts when Rachel repeatedly takes back the accusations, and then takes her denial back again multiple times so viewers are in a constant state of suspense about who the monster is in this movie. Although there is something that seems very real about the character of Rachel constantly flip-flopping on how to cope with her own rape, this constant giving and taking back of very serious allegations is an unparalleled act of psychic terrorism to the first-time viewer trying to keep up with the story. This juxtaposition of the horrifying plot with the idyllic, quirky small-town setting adds to the level of surrealness that makes GEORGIA RULE a harrowing watch that could at first glance be mistaken for a fluffy “Hallmark”-type movie. This quality, plus the film’s fair and balanced meditation on Mormon cultural values, make GEORGIA RULE a film we’ve been looking forward to talking about on the show for ages.

A confused man relies on his notes to piece together the tatters of memories of things he’s experienced mere minutes ago in order to communicate his sad reality to an audience that pities him — but enough about Boys’ Bible Study podcast! Our movie this week is a new entry in our series exploring the immense catalogue of filmmaker Jason Campbell (THE MAN WHO WENT TO HEAVEN, NUN NANCY, THE STORY OF MOTHER’S DAY) who specializes in slice-of-life films that feature surprisingly sophisticated storytelling paired with bizarre technical decisions related to sound, photography, and editing. THE NOTEBOOKS takes a relatively common, yet tragic story of a senior man struggling with a severely impaired memory, and elevates it to the realm of the surreal with sound effects that feel like a haunted house, and a bizarre scene where protagonist Preston Walker turns on a TV just to laugh while watching the static. On a nostalgia trip back to his hometown to reclaim memories of his childhood, Preston influences God’s will to fix the life problems of many strangers he encounters along the way, but he struggles with the limitation of needing to write every single detail of his life down in one of his many notebooks to remember basic things such as where he parked his car, and the names of his family members. Could these ordinary notebooks contain a powerful healing secret that enriches Preston’s life, and the lives of the people around him? You’ll have to tell us, because we forgot!

In this special episode, we spotlight one of our all time favorite directors who barely gets any coverage in press, even by fans of obscure cinema. We’re changing that today! cTom is one of the aliases of a mysterious film director who had an incredible run of directing six feature films from 2011-13. These are extremely low budget productions, starring unknown actors, but the conceptual scope of all of them is extremely ambitious. Our personal favorite is THE PRESIDENT GOES TO HEAVEN, a satire about a former United States president who falls into a coma and converts to Islam while unconscious and awaiting an illegal organ transplant. C Tom’s politics are basically impossible to pin down, because his writing is pretty incoherent, but the way this film blends webs of conspiracy theories, theological discussions, and toilet humor makes for an endlessly compelling watch. Our friend, reporter and author Lenny Flatley, shares our appreciation for C Tom, so we’re excited to have him back on to talk about the director’s work, and Lenny’s own upcoming book New Age Grifter: The True Story of Gabriel of Urantia and His Cosmic Family, which comes out on August 17, 2021.

The Devil Conspiracy (2022)
Boys' Bible Study
10/15/23 • 83 min
A plucky art student is kidnapped by satanists and involuntarily impregnated with the cloned embryo of the antichrist in this compelling, overwhelming, and unintentionally hilarious supernatural thriller. THE DEVIL CONSPIRACY is not the family-friendly type of Christian movie we tend to cover on our show; it’s decidedly R-rated for strong language and disturbing body horror. However, the plot is firmly embedded in Christian mythology, embellishing on the biblical battle between St. Michael and his fallen fellow archangel, Lucifer. In the film, Lucifer has escaped cosmic imprisonment and is attempting to regain human form with help from a satanic cult who earn extra money cloning historic heroes such as Michelangelo and Vivaldi and then selling the cloned babies to rich people who want a child with a built-in résumé. Protagonist Laura (Alice Orr-Ewing) is sketching artifacts at a Shroud of Turin exhibition when she and the Shroud are both kidnapped with the intent of implanting Christ’s DNA within her so she can be the “Virgin Mary” of the antichrist. This leads to the movie’s ultimate question: if you were pregnant with the literal devil, would you have an abortion? The resounding answer: no! After a cockamamie series of plot twists and pseudo-intellectual debates, THE DEVIL CONSPIRACY concludes that even Lucifer deserves a second chance. We can’t help but interpret this ending as strongly anti-abortion, a bizarre message to be left with after two hours of watching a woman be possessed and tortured by the demon seed within her.

The fictional First Family of conservative entertainment, THE POTWINS, are back with new episodes of their show after a several year hiatus. Portrayed by an all star cast, including Kevin Sorbo, Barry Bostwick, and special guest star Jon Lovitz, THE POTWINS are a family of greatly differing political views who still manage to find common ground with each other. We previously reviewed this show in its earlier incarnation as THE WORLD ACCORDING TO BILLY POTWIN, which starred Jonah Britton (possibly the son of writer/director Lenny Britton) as an intellectually precocious young libertarian who is able to mischievously outsmart all the adults in his life, especially the dumb liberals. Billy is back but takes a smaller role in favor of Kevin Sorbo’s lead role as patriarch Nate Potwin, whose more sensible, “Can’t we all just get along?” vibe echoes the theme of the show. THE POTWINS is now being marketed as the official show of X (formerly Twitter), despite a lack of official endorsement from X CEO Elon Musk or any other X staff. Nevertheless, new THE POTWINS episodes are being uploaded on there with the handle @TheShowOnX in case you were ever craving watching a 20 minute conservative sitcom on your phone as you scroll through memes. The debut episode of THE POTWINS is called “Blue Caller” and it’s a comedy of errors where an idiotic liberal gay couple is suing Nate Potwin when a misunderstanding leads them to believe Nate is violating their constitutional rights by denying them service at his hardware store. Has the whole world gone mad? (This is literally a line from the show.)

Let’s journey deeper into the twisted mind of Tim Chey, the Christian movie auteur responsible for some of our favorite films about the evils of money, Hollywood, and sports. Last week on this podcast, we congratulated Mr. Chey on the success of his newest film THE FIRING SQUAD, which we saw in theaters. This week we catch up on his most recent filmography we’ve neglected: 2022’s JOURNEY TO HELL. This is Chey’s take on the Divine Comedy trope of a guide leading a mortal spirit through hell, but the film is actually based on a John Bunyan novel instead of Dante. In Chey’s adaptation, protagonist Shane Badman is a successful entrepreneur and unsuccessful Christian who believes himself to be saved but is shocked after he perishes in a surfing accident only to wake up trapped in Hell for eternity. As we watch flashbacks of Shane’s corrupted earthly lifestyle, including an extremely meta scene where he makes fun of a bad Christian film, we also enjoy a guided tour of hell and all of the strange characters Shane meets along the way. Shane talks to Mao Zedong, the Zodiac Killer, the Columbine shooters, Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock, an unnamed “iPhone CEO”, and even a certain Führer who you might remember from history class. They’re all there on a mission to humble Shane and get him to realize that his meager faith on Earth was no match for his pride, which was ultimately his downfall. JOURNEY TO HELL is a sobering depiction of the consequences of a life without God, where demons are depicted as micromanaging human labor for all of eternity... which honestly just sounds a lot like Earth.

The Gathering (1998)
Boys' Bible Study
12/29/24 • 79 min
With Christmas season suddenly in our rearview mirrors, it’s time to move foward and acknowledge that we are one year closer to Jesus’s return. Something about the year number switching on Jan. 1 feels very apocalyptic, so we return to rapture themes in Christian media with the obscure and extremely entertaining THE GATHERING. Director Danny Carrales is an artist we respect for his work on a few key features in the faith-based film scene, especially his most recent CGI-heavy work HEAVEN’S WAR (2018). We also look forward to formally reviewing ESCAPE FROM HELL, a film we like but haven’t covered yet, which is directed by Carrales and also stars hunky Christian leading man Daniel Kruse who appears in several Carrales features from the 2000s and seems to be a muse of his. Daniel Kruse had a stint in the 2000s as a TV and film actor both in secular and Christian spheres; he brings his soap opera gravitas to his role as Michael in THE GATHERING, a high-powered white collar worker in the corporate world who has a “come to Jesus” moment and begins to suspect his company has a foundational role in the coming of the Antichrist and the New World Order. Michael is also visited by several apocalyptic visions that convince him Jesus’s return is imminent. These revelations come much to the chagrin of his wife Lisa, who feels jealous at the newfound role of Jesus in Michael’s life. Lisa’s mother Alex is also threatened by Michael’s Christianity, since she is an avowed atheist college professor who delights in owning her pathetic Christian undergrad students with logic and reason (as professors frequently do in these movies.) But when Alex and Lisa start experiencing visions of their own, the promise of Jesus’s second coming is too powerful even for them to ignore. THE GATHERING is a well paced and pulpy rapture thriller that we recommend for it’s over-the-top dialogue and one of the best “characters discover a scary website” scenes in all of Christian media.
