About Joe Beatrice, Founder:
Joe Beatrice has built his career on new ideas. A former marketing and technology entrepreneur, Joe founded his first company, Blue Dingo Digital, in the 1990s to help companies use the Internet to establish, brand, and grow their products.
But after 20 years, Joe was ready for a change. A longtime homebrewer, Joe saw the true magic of spirits after a transformative experience tasting whiskey straight from the barrel for the very first time. In 2013, he launched Barrel Craft Spirits in Louisville, Kentucky, the epicenter of the American spirits industry.
Instead of building his own distillery, Joe questioned the conventional wisdom and took a different course. He sourced and blended exceptional casks from established producers, bottled whiskeys at cask strength, and sold them as transparently as possible.
That approach was unique in the United States, but not the world. Scotland's long-established independent bottlers were a major inspiration, and Joe was captivated by their ability to elevate barrels of whisky into something greater than the sum of their parts. He sensed that American consumers, too, would embrace the chance to explore whiskey in an entirely new way.
Joe sold early releases case by case, personally pounding the pavement to drum up interest from bartenders and retailers. It turned out his visionary instincts were spot on once again. Barrell Craft Spirits' cask-strength small-batch and single-barrel releases quickly became an influencing force in American whiskey, picking up awards from the world's most prestigious spirits competitions.
Joe remains intimately involved with every step of the production process at Barrell Craft Spirits, using his exceptional palate alongside master blender Tripp Stimson to choose and create great spirits. Creative finishes, a liberated approach to blending, and a deep-seated commitment to releasing each whiskey at cask strength and without chill filtration - just like that fateful barrel tasting years ago-continues to guide every product release.
Tripp Stimson, Director of Distillery Operations & Chief Whiskey Scientist:
Tripp hails from Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 2004, following his graduation from Tennessee Technological University with a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology, he was recruited as a Research and Development Scientist for the Brown Forman Co...

Basil Hayden® Toast is the new permanent super-premium bourbon expression for the brand. This uniquely crafted 80 proof whiskey consists of an entirely new mash bill. In lieu of traditional rye grain, Basil Hayden Toast is made using US-grown brown rice, which adds a hint of sweetness and a touch less spice with increased depth of flavor that comes from secondary aging in a toasted then flash-charred oak barrel.
Rather than charring the barrel with open flame, the toasting process exposes the barrel to a long and gentle heat. The softer notes from the Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey receive the flavors from the toasted barrels, which is then blended back with non-Toasted bourbon to add complex flavor grounded in sweet vanilla, complemented by rich roasted notes – ideal to be sipped and savored neat, on the rocks, or stirred into your favorite aperitif-style cocktail with close company.
TASTING NOTES
- COLOR: Dark amber
- AROMA: Toasted oak complemented by dried fruit and caramelized sugar
- TASTE: Toasted wood and vanilla with a light mouthfeel
- FINISH: Sweet caramel

Press Release: Old Forester’s The 117 Series: Warehouse K Barrels Batch
Louisville, Ky. (August 11, 2021) – Today, Old Forester Distilling Co. announces the release of the second expression in the 117 Series -- a blend of barrels from historic Warehouse K.
The 117 Series is a limited-expression lineup created in Spring 2021, directed by the unique palate of Old Forester Master Taster Jackie Zykan.
117 Series: Warehouse K features a blend of barrels aged on different floors from a warehouse known to produce exceptional liquid. Constructed in 1953, Warehouse K uses the time-honored tradition of heat-cycling and has long been one of Old Forester’s favorite places for Single Barrel expressions.
"Warehouse K has gained a cult following among bourbon connoisseurs,” Zykan said. “This blend is a representation across multiple floors and locations within this warehouse, giving a more holistic example of the profile its barrels yield."
This year marks Old Forester’s 151st anniversary, making it the only bourbon brand with an uninterrupted history, sold by the same family company before, during, and after Prohibition.
Old Forester Warehouse K is bottled at 110 proof and will be available starting August 12th at the retail shop at Old Forester Distilling Co. for $49.99 in limited quantities -- and at select Kentucky stores. Visit OldForester.com for more information.
Distillery Notes:
- Color: Rich honey
- Aroma: On the nose, creamy chocolate, caramel, and brown sugar lead, with a hint of golden raisin and a foreshadowing of the pepper the finish will unveil.
- Taste: The palate brings with it a full-bodied and rich viscosity, peripheral spice, and a touch of black cherry alongside bitter molasses.
- Finish: The robust yet balanced spice finish completes the story of the well-known complexity which is the K warehouse.

49: Broken Barrel Whiskey
Bourbon Lens
12/16/19 • 60 min
On this week’s episode we sit down with Broken Barrel Whiskey Founder and CEO, Seth Benhaim. Seth started the Infuse Spirits Company in 2012 when he was 25 years old. The Infuse Spirits line focuses on naturally infusing and blending spirits with natural fruits and spices. Seth's passion for infusing spirits led him to become the youngest brand owner to ever win Best-in-Show and Double-Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
While the Infuse Spirits line primarily focuses on blending and infusing Vodka spirits, Seth realized he wanted to expand his blending experience to whiskey. This created the spin off from Infuse Spirits to Broken Barrel. We sat down with Seth and shared some pours of his Single Oak series of Broken Barrel Whiskey. The premise of this project, was sourcing Kentucky and Indiana whiskey, and then additional aging in steel containers, using staves from used barrels. In the single cask series, Seth has created a Mizunara finish, a Peated Scotch finish, and an Amontillado Sherry finish. Seth's process for accomplishing this, is to use reclaimed barrels that have seen a life of aging other whiskies. Once Seth receives the used barrels at his Los Angeles warehouse, he removes the barrel hoops and then the fun part, smashing the barrels with a sledge hammer, giving him the staves needed to age his whiskey and created unique flavor profiles.
It was fun getting to sit and talk with Seth for this podcast. Seth is not a Master Distiller, he is a spirits enthusiast who loves to blend sourced spirits and create new and interesting flavors that stand out in a crowded market. So pour yourself a dram and enjoy the show as we discuss what it’s like to start a business in the spirits industry and the inspiration behind creating the Broken Barrel Single Cask Series: Mizunara, Isle of Peat, and The Cask of Amontillado.
Cheers!

103: OH Ingram River Aged Whiskey
Bourbon Lens

Hank Ingram joined us to talk about his namesake whiskey and the unique aging technique it employs. Nashville entrepreneur, Hank Ingram, is the founder of Brown Water Spirits and their line of O.H. Ingram River Aged Whiskey. As the name implies, this whiskey was river-aged inside a floating rickhouse. This rickhouse is a large barge moored to the banks of the Mississippi River, benefiting from the riverside’s temperature variations, humidity, and the constant motion of the river. While some may be skeptical of non-traditional aging techniques (including ourselves), this is hardly a shortcut in the aging process. Hank has patiently waited and released straight whiskey (2-4 years old) which has been enhanced by river aging.
We were honored to be the first people outside of Brown Water Spirits to taste the new Straight Rye Whiskey, which had not released at the time of recording. We think you’ll be impressed with these whiskies and, as their distribution grows, you should check them out.

About the Brand:
O.H. Ingram River Aged Whiskey is aged inside a barge on a first-of-its-kind floating rickhouse. Moored on the riverbank of Ballard Country (Wickliffe, KY) we utilize the climate of the Mississippi River along with its drastic rise and fall to provoke a unique interaction between wood and spirit that is unlike any other. The temperature swings, humidity, and constant cadence of the flowing water keeps our whiskey working. This unique process provides a unique interaction between wood and spirit – we call it barrel aged and river raised!
About the Whiskey:
- River Aged Straight Whiskey:
-
- The first release in the River Aged Series.
- Vital Stats: Mash Bill – 96 proof, blend of 95% rye, 5% barley whiskey and 36% rye, 4% barley, 60% corn bourbon.
- Aged 3 years in new charred oak barrels.
- Available in select markets for ~$80/750ml.
- Appearance: Warm amber. Medium viscosity and a gentle swirl ends in clear, fine legs.
- Nose: Right off I got the strong scent of baking spices, predominantly cinnamon. The throat-soothing allure of honey and meringue with a bit of acid from an orange peel
- Palate: Buttery mouthfeel, tastes kind of rummy, may be the way the sugar shows up. The slow build heat mellows into a smooth taste with distinct spice.
- River Aged Straight Rye:
- Just released in December 2020
- Currently available in Middle and East Tennessee with additional markets coming as inventories are available.
About the Founder Hank Ingram:
- Hank Ingram comes from a long line of entrepreneurs who for more than five generations have built businesses with the river at their core.
- Beginning in the mid-1800s, his great-great-great-grandfather Orrin Henry Ingram founded the Empire Lumber Company. Hank’s great-grandfather brought the family to Nashville where he founded the Ingram Barge Company in 1946.
- Ingram Industries — the marine logistics, book production and distribution company
- Hank is the latest in his family tree to bring a great idea to the river’s edge. With an intimate knowledge of the river and a penchant for a bourbon nightcap, he developed the idea for the unique river ageing process while in business school. After the idea won first place in a pitch competition in 2015, Hank founded Brown Water Spirits shortly thereafter to bring the idea to life.
- Hank previously served as Director of Corporate Partnerships for Nashville Soccer Club and held various positions within Ingram Industries and its subsidiaries.
- Hank is a graduate of Washington and Lee University and received his MBA from the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University. He is an active volunteer in a number of Nashville organizations and serves on boards for the Boy Scouts of Middle Tennessee and the Nashville Symphony.
- In his spare time, Hank enjoys golf, guitar and cycling. And of course, a neat glass of bourbon.

The O’Shaughnessy Family convinced Brian to leave an established and world-renowned Irish distillery to perfect his own passion project. Brian explains why he made this massive leap in his career in this episode, but in the words of Brian’s mother, “What’s for you, won’t go by you.” We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did. About Keeper’s Heart - O'Shaughnessy Distilling
The Story
O’Shaughnessy Distilling Company was founded with a belief that the spirit of family and friends, and our shared experiences together, provide us with deep connection and meaning in our lives. Our whiskey was created to celebrate the spirit of family, support our community, and leave a meaningful legacy for generations to come. We believe that the spirit of family is the strongest positive force in the world, and we are committed to celebrating the moments worth keeping.
Several years ago, cousins Patrick and Michael O’Shaughnessy, along with Michael’s father Gerry, were sharing a bottle of whiskey at the end of a long and joyous day at an O’Shaughnessy family reunion. They were reflecting on the importance of family; on how to make sure future generations stayed connected; and the legacy they wanted to leave.
As conversation went deeper into the night and more whiskey was poured, they had a realization: the answer was right there in the glass.
It was at that point they set out to create a whiskey that celebrated their Irish American heritage and the cousins set off to Ireland. They sent a chance email to whom they considered the finest Master Distiller in the world - Brian Nation – and much to their surprise, Brian responded and a meeting in Dublin was put on the books.
That 30-minute meeting turned into a 5-hour meal as Michael, Patrick, Brian, and his wife Una, created an immediate connection. A new family was forming, and a vision was emerging: to blend the best of Irish and American whiskey traditions to create something entirely new.
The Distillery
The team set out to make their vision a reality, and while they procured some of the finest stocks of aged whiskey, they knew they needed to make their own. They needed a place where Brian, the legendary Master Distiller responsible for making some of the most renowned products on the market, could fulfill his desire to innovate and push the category beyond expectations.
They began creating the O’Shaughnessy Distillery in an old potato factory right in the heart of their hometown of Minneapolis. At the heart of the world-class distillery are three beautiful copper pot stills, the key to making Irish style whiskey. The distillery opened to the public in Summer 2021 and boasts a guided education tour, a tasting room, multiple bar areas, private spaces for events, food service, and outdoor patio seating. The distillery is destined to become a home away from home for all whiskey lovers.
The 30,000 square foot distillery houses more than 15,000 square feet dedicated entirely to the whiskey making process, including the signature component: three wondrous copper pot stills ( SHOW NOTE : 8000 Liter Wash Still, 6000 Liter Feints Still, 6000 Liter Spirits Still or approximately 2113 Gallon Wash Still, 1...
