With recent world events, we are choosing to focus on the thing that make us happy, talking to authors about books. Today Dianne shares her conversation with author Sebastian Dureaux-Russell. Readers of Book Banter Magazine may recognize Sebastian's name and book cover from a previous issue when he was a featured poet in the April/May 2024 issue. His poem, Ethan Frome Sled , speaks to a need for reinvention and creation while blending literary nostalgia.

It is not surprising to find that Sebastian has an incredibly deep pool of talent to draw from to feed his creative works. Educated at Duke Ellington School of the Arts and The International Center of Photography, Sebastian is not just an accomplished writer, but is also an award-winning photographer, speaker, and a former model who can perform the “Dior Turn”.

In addition to his award-winning photography, Sebastian has written for numerous publications including Where Magazine, Travel Weekly, and The New York Times . However, in recent years his focus has shifted from writing articles to literary fiction.

His award-winning debut novel, Burning with a Blue Flame , is a historical fiction adventure the centers around Pilot Elmer Darrel. Elmer agrees to compete against race car driver Humbolt Bratka. These men are both trying to reconcile their own personal demons as they speed toward the finish line while navigating through a maze of distractions including speakeasies, passionate interludes, and plenty of jazz.

Today Dianne shares her interview with Edinburgh based writer and musician, David Atkinson. David attributes his love of reading to being a significant force, pushing him toward eventually pursuing a career in writing. From a young age he remembers being a voracious reader and even having a fondness for the classics that other his age tended to shun.

Even though David is an Amazon bestselling author, he still works a “day job” and one that could not be much more removed from his creative pursuits. Working in financial services, David find’s his writing to be a form of escapism from the less creative side of his life, but writing is not his only creative outlet. He is also an accomplished musician and used that talent to create a soundtrack for his latest book.

While David has not yet been able to transition to being a full-time writer, he has had a good deal of success with the books he has published. His first novel, Love Byte , was published by Buried River Press. This romantic comedy not only made him a bestselling author, but put him on a shortlist for the Romantic Comedy Novel of the Year Award (2015) by the Romantic Novelists’ Association.

David later followed that book with another romantic comedy, Squeezed . His third book in this genre, The Second Life of Nathan Jones , was published by One More Chapter, an imprint of Harper Collins.

With hundreds to thousands of positive reviews for his traditionally published, romantic comedies, one would think it would be logical for David to continue publishing these types of books. However, his greatest success was yet to come when he took a chance on another genre and turned to self-publishing.

Future Proof is a listed on Amazon.com as a time travel, comedy/drama and nearly a year after publication, it is still – as of this writing – sitting in the top 25 in at least three categories.
