Episode 6 finds me chatting with James McGregor from Galway's snarling post-punk kings of wry observations - The Clockworks. James also shares his songwriting techniques and discusses what 2021 holds for the band. And as ever, great music guaranteed.

Episode 5! In this edition I chat to Michael Smyth, founder and guitarist of Belfast band Paper Tigers. And also possibly the hardest working man in rock 'n' roll - he writes most of their songs, plays the drums, does all the bookings and social media, runs his own promotion company and plays in a tribute band. Oh and has a full time job. We cover all this and more in a wide-ranging chat covering everything from learning to be more melodic by listening to Taylor Swift to the effect of Brexit on touring, Dave Grohl and plans for a new EP.

Blowtorch Records Podcast - Ep 59 - Irish angry avant-garde punk Meryl Streek
play

10/31/24 • 47 min

"It's just a punk record with me shouting my head off"
Meryl Streek understates his impact as his outspoken oratory, delivered over a mix of melodic electronica and punk, blasts his chosen targets - the catholic church, cover-up culprits and capitalism. His new album Songs For The Deceased hits just as hard as 2022 debut 796 and is earning him swathes of new fans as well as critical acclaim and radio play.
He's on great form as we sit down before his upcoming UK tour and discuss what inspires him and makes him angry, and why he chose to perform using only a laptop, a microphone and a torch. We also discover he has never liked his voice and that 796 originally wasn't meant to have any vocals on it. Listen in for more great stories from the man behind the contact lenses as he completes his third album.
You will find Meryl Streek mostly on Instagram and you can find all album and gig information via his Linktree

Our first podcast of 2021 features South Wales' mighty The Rivers, post industrial poets with a fine line in nuanced and dynamic songwriting. Evan, Nathan and Dan talk us through the music scene in South Wales, their influences and what inspires them, and their songwriting. Nathan gets embarrassed as he's nominated as the best musician in the band, we uncover Evan's predilection for prog rock and Dan is revealed as the songwriting leader of an autocracy. And we get the scoop on their latest addition to the line-up - hello Lloyd. As ever entertaining chats and great music.

Welcome loyal listeners to episode 7 of the Blowtorch Records podcast. In this edition I have a natter with Rob Dalton from SCATTERED ASHES. He tells me their story from the inception of this current lineup in January, through the release of debut single 'Love is Not an Option' to their plans for 2021. And of course great music and some of their influences. As they say 'Taking cues from the likes of Bauhaus, Gang of Four, Interpol & Joy Division, the band sit in a darker lane than most of their contemporaries, taking post-punk back to its murkier roots.'
