Cosmopolitan Magazine's Cover Stirs Controversy in Fitness Industry
01/28/21 • 48 min
"Healthy at any size" is splashed across the cover of the 2021 February "Cosmopolitan Magazine," with a photo of a plus-size model. She's a beautiful woman and should not be judged, but has the "Body Positivity" Movement somehow gone too far? The magazine opens up to feature many more models in various aspects of body types in athletics, who relay why they are so healthy & happy. Although a great message in self-love, is "Cosmo" being irresponsible by promoting an elevated Body Mass Index with being healthy and happy? Who is anyone to say what IS or is NOT healthy?! One may see see a photo of society's stereotypical "perfect body" on a health/fitness magazine, but perhaps that person is actually not healthy at all. Perhaps they struggle with an eating disorder, mental health, and have low nutrients in their system. On the other hand, society will often judge someone who is deemed as "overweight," assume they are lazy and unhappy with themselves, and that is simply not the case in any way, shape, form. Fitness Professionals are having a hard time accepting "Cosmo's" message...but let's face the fact that it's Click Bait to sell the magazine, and they're dong a great job of just that.
Today, I'm excited to introduce Health & Wellness Coach, Steph DeMatteo of STEPHDFIT. Besides fitness, she also works in the high-end fashion industry of NYC so can really offer some great feedback on the "Cosmopolitan" cover, and what it truly means to be healthy & happy.
