What to do when your OPERATIONS feel heavy (and WTF is the difference between an OBM and a VA?)
Big Dreams Great Teams® with Paula Maidens
02/13/22 • 35 min
Today’s episode is such an important topic as we discuss what to do when the operations side of your business starts to feel heavy.
Once the initial buzz of growing your business fades, things can start to feel a little heavy and overwhelm can set in when you find yourself “too busy” juggling all the balls. Whether it’s because you’re still in the weeds of doing #allthethings or something about the way your team is working just doesn’t feel quite right, it’s something you need to address and eliminate ASAP!
In this episode I chat with business analyst, consultant and mindset coach, Melissa Froehlich who shares how to untangle yourself from the heavy vibe that can come from managing all the operations in your business and how to find flow and alignment in your business.
Melissa’s background is in supporting business owners to run their operations (and give them their lives back!) and we chat about:
- The importance of good “operational hygiene” - what this actually means and how to check it in your business
- WTF the difference is between a VA, OBM, DOO and Integrator (you need to know this!) and who you should look to hire and when
- How understanding yourself as a leader informs the style of team you actually need and how critical this element is when it comes to the operational side of your business feeling smooth
This 30 minutes might be the best you spend on your business this month, as Melissa shares all the juicy tips to give you clarity in what’s causing the heaviness and how to banish it for good - in the right way for your business.
I can’t wait to hear what you think!

Big Dreams Great Teams® with Paula Maidens
07/16/23 • 22 min
I am so excited to share today’s episode of the Big Dreams Great Teams podcast as I take you behind the scenes and share some of my end-of-financial-year reflections. Dive in with me as I share an overview of my accounts, profitability, revenue, and some of the highlights and lessons I have learned along the way.
I talk about how I believe I am well and truly out of the start-up phase of my business and share how this was demonstrated to me via my business's profitability, consistency of revenue, and overall growth. I speak about the wage I pay myself and how this has drastically changed over the past year.
I go into depth on how my boundaries have been challenged through some of the limiting beliefs and stories I was telling myself, and I go over a few of the realisations I had surrounding my 4-day work week, my family, and my clients. There have been several areas I have improved upon over the last year, from speaking at events to working one-on-one with a coach. I share how these changes have allowed me the opportunity to pivot my focus from growing my revenue to focusing on my business’s profit.
I know as an entrepreneur when we are busy doing all the things, it can be hard to take a moment and reflect on how far we have come and acknowledge all the hard work we have put in. I share how I am proud of myself and the business I have built over the past five years. I hope that this episode encourages you to take a moment and reflect on the financial year that has been, and how far you have come along in building a business and life of your dreams.

How hiring an Ops Manager created instant 20% revenue growth - a BTS of a Bookkeeping business with Sally Brindle
Big Dreams Great Teams® with Paula Maidens
07/09/23 • 31 min
Today I go behind the scenes with one of my wonderful clients, Sally Brindle, who owns Total Accounts, a business that provides full-service bookkeeping to small and medium businesses. Sally started Total Accounts 10 years ago and is extremely passionate about helping small businesses thrive. In this episode of Big Dreams Great Teams, Sally and I explore the journey of leading her high multiple six-figure business, and some of the big shifts she has made over the last nine months since working together in her business and life.
Sally shares with me why she decided to have a 100% fully remote team from the beginning and why that works best for her, her business, her team and her clients. We explore the ways in which Sally was leading her team when we first started working together, and talk about some of the strategies we put into place to help her overcome the feeling of always being really busy. This is a feeling I know a lot of entrepreneurs have and struggle with, and we speak about how we worked out what Sally actually wanted to be doing in her business, and what tasks and responsibilities could be given to someone else on her team. We share how we mapped out a hiring strategy that suited Sally and her business allowing her to go on and confidently grow her team to 10 people and which furthered her businesses revenue growth.
We take a look at the framework Sally now has in place to lead her team and how she is living her dream week and what that looks like for her. I hope that this episode inspires you to take a look at your current team and I encourage you to identify some tasks and responsibilities that you could pass along to someone on your team, or to a new hire. You deserve to have a team who performs to your highest expectations, brings you a great return and tangibly supports you to build the life and business of your dreams.

The Impact of Team Effectiveness on Your Clients & Your Brand
Big Dreams Great Teams® with Paula Maidens
07/14/24 • 19 min
In this episode, Paula Maidens explores the impact of effective team management on brand experience through real-life observations of two very different renovation teams on her street.
This episode could also be called “Lessons in Team Management from the Tradies on My Street!”
You’ll hear Paula’s key insights on how she can see from the outside the systemisation, standardisation and team efficiency in two businesses she’s been watching... and how the behind of the scenes of a business may not be as hidden as you think... and in fact, it can significantly influence your clients' perceptions and ultimately, your business success.
Highlights
- Paula opens the episode by discussing the often-overlooked impact of disorganised and systemised teams on clients and potential clients.
- The importance of team efficiency and how it shapes the overall brand experience.
- Paula describes her neighbourhood in North Brisbane, where multiple renovation projects have been ongoing.
- She introduces two distinct teams: Team One (builders renovating a house) and Team Two (house removal specialists) and shares her observations of them both and the impression that it’s left on her as an external observing party.
Key Lessons
- Visibility of Inefficiency - Outsiders can easily detect if a team is disorganised and inefficient.
- Impact of Standardisation - Consistent processes lead to better efficiency and improved brand perception. Standardisation helps to manage team behaviour.
- Systemisation Benefits - Internal systemisation will help you get a higher return on investment (in your team) and the external benefits will include positive client interactions and brand consistency.
