What better way to start a new year than '80s action movies! January 2021 starts with the McTermBo theme as Jonathan (@berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) pick some missed action movies from the '80s. Jonathan and Corey were both born in that decade and yet still missed some classics. Join them as they check some more movies off of their gap lists moving into yet another year of Movie Club.

However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all.

For March 2022, Corey and Jonathan are picking from movies that are NOW STREAMING. There are so many streaming services to choose from, but sometimes the options are overwhelming. Fortunately, they found four films that at least one of them had never seen before - some originals to the services and one dating back quite a few decades - to center the theme around this month.

Berkreviews.com Movie Club - Road House (1989)
Berkreviews Movie Club
06/23/19 • 66 min
June 2019 introduces a new theme geared to take advantage of all those streaming subscriptions that so many people pay for, but maybe don't utilize quite enough. Simply put, Corey (@coreyrstarr) and Jonathan (@berkreviews) picked the movies for this month from one of the streaming services (although it seems we just used Amazon Prime) to watch movies that at least one of them had never seen before. There are tons of movies to choose from, but the four listed below are what they landed on.
As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. Week 3 - Road House (1989)
Could a movie be summed up any simpler than "A tough bouncer is hired to tame a dirty bar." On a recent episode of Top Five Movies, it was revealed that neither Jonathan nor Corey had ever seen this 1989 Patrick Swayze vehicle Road House. Thus, Corey decided it was high time they watched director Rowdy Herrington's opus of bar violence starring Swayze, Kelly Lynch, and Sam Elliott. You may have caught a pattern, but this one is also available on Prime. We also had a special guest on this episode, Top Five Movie regular Michael Sanchez (@servermonkey)

Berkreviews.com Movie Club - The City of Lost Children (1995)

For August 2020, Corey (@coreyrstarr) and Jonathan (@berkreviews) have selected the theme Speaking my Language...or non-English native films. That's right, you'll be reading these films this month unless you're more cultured than they are. Each film this month would be considered foreign to most Americans. It's often an area that neither dive into enough so dedicated a month to it makes a lot of sense.

Week 5 - The City of Lost Children (1995)
Book ending the theme, Corey selected another Jean-Pierre Jeunet on her gap list, The City of Lost Children (1995). This film stars Ron Perlman, Daniel Emilfork, and Judith Vittet and features a story about "A scientist in a surrealist society kidnaps children to steal their dreams, hoping that they slow his aging process."

Berkreviews.com Movie Club - 7500 (2019)
Berkreviews Movie Club
07/25/20 • 71 min
Fresh off quarantine and on the precipice of returning to it, Jonathan (@Berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) return to the theme of Small Screen. That is to say, these films are all streaming originals or at least available on a streaming service. It's a good way to check off some movies that slipped passed the two of them over the years or maybe even this year.

Week 4 - 7500 (2019)
Jonathan is a fan of Joseph Gordon-Levitt so the Amazon Prime original 7500 (2019) made sense to check out. Directed by Patrick Vollrath and starring Gordon-Levitt, Omid Memar, and Aylin Tezel. The film sounds intense with IMDb.com stating, "When terrorists try to seize control of a Berlin-Paris flight, a soft-spoken young American co-pilot struggles to save the lives of the passengers and crew while forging a surprising connection with one of the hijackers."

Before Midnight (2013)

November is here and at Berkreviews.com we are covering a new theme on Movie Club of Love Stinks. That means Jonathan (@berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) are focusing on movies where love hurts. Really, this was a time to finally check off the Before Trilogy and throw in one more tragic romance.
Week 3: Before Midnight (2013)
Jonathan, in a predictable twist, picked the third film of the trilogy for week 3. We meet Jesse and Celine nine years on in Greece. Almost two decades have passed since their first meeting on that train bound for Vienna. Inherent spoilers in the details, but how has their relationship evolved.

Berkreviews.com Movie Club - Creepshow (1982)
Berkreviews Movie Club
10/05/19 • 63 min
It's Corey's favorite time of the year...Spooky season. Thus, Corey (@coreyrstarr) or Jonathan (@berkreviews) started thinking of how to best tackle the month of October. Why not go with horror anthologies! This month, they are picking an anthology that they have never seen or at least not seen in a long time alternating their picks weekly...as they do.

Week 1: Creepshow (1982)
Corey has been talking about Creepshow for ever, but Jonathan had never seen it. Thus, it makes perfect sense to be his first pick for the new month. Directed by the great George A. Romero and written by Stephen King - who even stars in one of the films - and stars Hal Holbrook, Leslie Nielsen, Adrienne Barbeau, Ed Harris, and Ted Danson. Five short films wrapped with a small story of a kid whose dad won't let him read the horror comic he loves...Creepshow.

Berkreviews.com Movie Club - The Searchers
Berkreviews Movie Club

July 2019 saddles up a new theme of films that can't help but make you feel that oppressive heat of summer. HOWDY PARTNER ushers in the Western a formerly beloved genre that eventually was taken out back and shot by Hollywood. Simply put, Corey (@coreyrstarr) and Jonathan (@berkreviews) have picked the movies for this month that meet the genre criteria of Westerns though their picks couldn't be more different in many ways. There are tons of movies to choose from, but the four listed below are what they landed on.
As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all.
Week 4 - The Searchers (1956)
Jonathan had to pick another classic that he'd missed, which for this genre is far too many and hard to narrow down, and selected The Searchers (1956). This film clearly inspired many to follow, include Bone Tomahawk, as the plot for this John Ford film states "An American Civil War veteran embarks on a journey to rescue his niece from the Comanches." Considering it stars John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, and Vera Miles it was clearly one that needs to be seen and a perfect conclusion for the month.

Berkreviews.com Movie Club - The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)
Berkreviews Movie Club
04/25/20 • 79 min
Partly because the country is on lockdown and partly because Jonathan (@Berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) were not feeling like the previously planned theme was that compelling, April 2020 features Small Screen movies. These are films that are currently streaming on one service or another.
Week 4 - The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)
Corey loves horror and has been subscribed to Shudder for a while. They were offering a special so she decided to take the last pick of the month from there. The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014) is directed by Adam Robitel and stars Jill Larson, Anne Ramsay, and Michelle Ang. This film is about "An elderly woman battling Alzheimer's disease agrees to let a film crew document her condition, but what they discover is something far more sinister going on."
