Berkreviews Movie Club features the hosts, Jonathan Berk and Corey Starr, watching movies that at least one of them has never seen (or at least not for a really long time). To make choosing a bit more fun, each month has a different theme in which the hosts take turns selecting the film. They then do a spoiler-free review before launching into the full spoilerific review. Sometimes there are guests or interviews...but usually it's just the scheduled movie. 5.0

What better way to start a new year than '80s action movies! January 2021 starts with the McTermBo theme as Jonathan (@berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) pick some missed action movies from the '80s. Jonathan and Corey were both born in that decade and yet still missed some classics. Join them as they check some more movies off of their gap lists moving into yet another year of Movie Club.

As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all.

Week 5 - They Live (1988)

Directed by John Carpenter

  • Roddy Piper ... Nada
  • Keith David ... Frank
  • Meg Foster ... Holly
  • George 'Buck' Flower ... Drifter

For March 2022, Corey and Jonathan are picking from movies that are NOW STREAMING. There are so many streaming services to choose from, but sometimes the options are overwhelming. Fortunately, they found four films that at least one of them had never seen before - some originals to the services and one dating back quite a few decades - to center the theme around this month.

With the release of Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw, Jonathan picked his top five movie spin-offs. That is a film that takes a side character from a movie and gives them their own feature. Corey and Michael weren't able to join this week so it's short and sweet.

Jonathan's list:

5. Get Him to the Greek
4. The Wolverine
3. Bumblebee
2. Creed
1. The Lego Batman Movie

It's Berktober here at Berkreviews.com, and that means Jonathan (@berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) are focusing on horror. This time, the theme of I'll Show you Scary forced Jonathan and Corey to dive into the Rotten Tomatoes top 100 rated horror films for the movies on the list that they've not seen. There are many on the list that both Corey and Jonathan love, but they had to pick some more obscure ones to fulfill the requirements of the show. Will that turn out to be a good thing or a bad thing? In past years, they've not enjoyed some highly loved horror films (listen to their Phantasm and Suspiria episodes), but who knows what they'll find in these selections.

Week 4 - The Wicker Man (1973)

The only film on the list that one of the duo has seen before, Corey picked it to check The Wicker Man (1973) off her gap list. Plus it sits at number #77 with an 89% RT score. It is directed by Robin Hardy and stars Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, and Diane Cilento. The synopsis reads "A puritan Police Sergeant arrives in a Scottish island village in search of a missing girl who the locals claim never existed."

Week 3 - Eyes Without a Face (1960)

Jonathan bought the criterion for Eyes Without a Face (1960) a few years ago after he saw Edgar recommend it on the Criterion Closet. It is number 20 on the list with a 98% RT score. The movie is directed by Georges Franju and stars Pierre Brasseur, Alida Valli, and Juliette Mayniel. "A surgeon causes an accident which leaves his daughter disfigured, and goes to extremes to give her a new face."

Week 1 - A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)

Jonathan had been meaning to watch this one since he saw The Bad Batch (2016). A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night was #32 on the list and has a 96% RT. Directed by Ana Lily Amirpour this Iranian vampire film was available to watch on Shudder and Mubi. It stars Sheila Vand, Arash Marandi, and Marshall Manesh and the IMDb.com synopsis reads "In the Iranian ghost-town Bad City, a place that reeks of death and loneliness, the townspeople are unaware they are being stalked by a lonesome vampire."

Movie Club - Cape Fear (1991)

Berkreviews Movie Club

09/26/20 • 79 min

September has Jonathan (@berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) focusing on an iconic director: Martin Scorsese. While Jonathan has seen some of the big films of Scorsese's extensive filmography, there are a few he still wants to check off his gap list. Corey has explored it even less so there are plenty of major titles for them to watch for September 2020.

Week 4: Cape Fear (1991)

For the last film this month Corey picked Cape Fear. It's a remake and a tough watch since the plot reads "A convicted rapist, released from prison after serving a fourteen-year sentence, stalks the family of the lawyer who originally defended him." Though the cast bodes well as it has Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, and Juliette Lewis.

Corey picked Don't Look Now (1973) off of the RT list sitting at #28 with a 94% RT score. The film stars Julie Christie, Donald Sutherland, and Hilary Mason and is directed by Nicolas Roeg. While a bit wordy, the synopsis reads "A married couple grieving the recent death of their young daughter are in Venice when they encounter two elderly sisters, one of whom is psychic and brings a warning from beyond."
