Behind The Veil - Vendor Meals... A Right or A Privilege

This week we get personal! At a recent event, I was given attitude about the vendor meals - and so I posted about it. And the response was intense on both sides of the aisle. To feed or not to feed?? You would think the idea of a vendor meal would be an easy issue to discuss but there are so many factors that go into it.
The cost - many venues and catering companies are upping the cost of a vendor meal making it almost the same cost as the guest meal.
The timing - when do you make them available and are the vendors missing anything because of the timing
The number - It happens all of the time, the client will provide a certain number of vendor meals, and then one of the vendors brings more staff than originally expected or the food is eaten by others than who it was intended for.
The expectation - It has been said that this is an industry standard but what industry? When did it become a standard? And if it is standard, who outlines the rules?
Client expectations - many clients don't understand the idea of paying for vendor meals since in most of their day to day lives, the company will give time for lunch, but not the meal itself.
And this is just one of many behind the scenes complication that seemed to becoming systemic especially now that vendors are busier than ever, with labor shortages, material slowdowns, and increased cost in EVERYTHING!

During Covid - it felt like technology wa a lifesaver when everything else was going to the trash pile! Technology helped us communicate with clients in ways that never seemed possible.
This week's guest is Nora Shiels - the creator and owner of Rock Paper Coin - a must have for event pros when scheduling payments, contracts, and communication with other vendors on a collaborative event. Nora had zero experience when it came to technology but knew there was a need and had a solution! But is technology always a good thing? Does it ever get in the way of the one one one relationship, which is the foundation of the trust built between client and event pro?
Nora Sheils is a co-founder of Rock Paper Coin, a software platform that brings together wedding planners, couples, and vendors into one system for managing and paying contracts and invoices. Nora is also the founder of Bridal Bliss, a planning firm based in the Pacific Northwest. It was in the weeds of the planning business that she—along with her sister-in-law Elizabeth—recognized a gap in the market for a comprehensive and collaborative platform that brought together a planner, their client, and the rest of the event team. In 2018, they launched Rock Paper Coin as the solution they were always seeking. Although neither carried a background in tech, they pulled together the necessary resources because they knew their digital solution would make a difference in the industry as Gen Z emerges and we work with increasingly tech-dependent clients.
