How to Know if You’re Ready for the School Year
Beginning Teacher Talk: A Podcast for New Elementary Teachers
07/06/22 • 22 min
If you’re a new teacher, do you feel ready for the upcoming school year?
After student teaching, we quickly realize that much of the theory that we learned in college is much more difficult to apply. We start to see the gaps in what we learned in our university classes and how things actually play out inside the classroom. Still, we have a vision in our heads of how we're going to be an amazing teacher just like the amazing teachers we've had before us. But we underestimate, or are entirely unaware, of the careful strategic planning and years of experience that it really took for that to happen.
I want to help prepare you for the reality of this learning curve that you’re about to experience as a brand new teacher. Today I’m sharing some things that you’ll want to consider (that go beyond classroom set up) as you go into your first year of teaching.

How to Help Struggling Readers in Your Classroom
Beginning Teacher Talk: A Podcast for New Elementary Teachers
03/16/22 • 40 min
One of the most challenging parts of teaching is knowing how to support your students who are struggling with reading. This is especially prevalent right now, as we’re all experiencing massive gaps because of everything that children have been through with COVID. There has been lots of virtual learning from home, and that means that kids may not have gotten the level of support and reading instruction that they need.
So, if we have these huge gaps, how can we plan our literacy instruction to meet the needs of all students, especially our struggling readers? As our guest Alison Ryan says, the first step is believing you can. Alison and I are going to be talking all about what to do when you first notice that one, or maybe many, of your students are struggling with reading.
