If you’re a new teacher, do you feel ready for the upcoming school year?

After student teaching, we quickly realize that much of the theory that we learned in college is much more difficult to apply. We start to see the gaps in what we learned in our university classes and how things actually play out inside the classroom. Still, we have a vision in our heads of how we're going to be an amazing teacher just like the amazing teachers we've had before us. But we underestimate, or are entirely unaware, of the careful strategic planning and years of experience that it really took for that to happen.

I want to help prepare you for the reality of this learning curve that you’re about to experience as a brand new teacher. Today I’m sharing some things that you’ll want to consider (that go beyond classroom set up) as you go into your first year of teaching.

One of the most challenging parts of teaching is knowing how to support your students who are struggling with reading. This is especially prevalent right now, as we’re all experiencing massive gaps because of everything that children have been through with COVID. There has been lots of virtual learning from home, and that means that kids may not have gotten the level of support and reading instruction that they need.

So, if we have these huge gaps, how can we plan our literacy instruction to meet the needs of all students, especially our struggling readers? As our guest Alison Ryan says, the first step is believing you can. Alison and I are going to be talking all about what to do when you first notice that one, or maybe many, of your students are struggling with reading.

Do you take your school work home every weekend? Do you check work emails on the weekend? If the answer to these questions is yes, then you may think it’s not even possible to stop doing these things. You may also find it challenging to get any real planning done during contracted hours. As teachers, the lines behind work time and personal time can get very blurry very quickly...even after the back-to-school craziness has come and gone.

If you feel like you’re working 24/7, then you’re going to love hearing from today’s guest, productivity expert, Stephanie Palovchik. She really knows a thing or two about productivity and honing in on systems so that the overwhelm doesn't last you all year long.

When I was a beginning teacher, I had a teacher assistant and one of the biggest mistakes I made was not being super clear about what her role would be in my classroom. The thought of telling her what to do was super uncomfortable for me, and that made our relationship difficult. Over the years, I learned all kinds of creative and helpful ways to utilize a TA. Now I'm sharing those ideas with you so that you can see what a great gift it can be to have a TA in your classroom!
